' Patented July 7, 1931 i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ras'rnnme means roarnnxman sm'rs Application filed February 4,4927. Serial This invention relates in eneral to chairs and more particularly to astenin means for securing the flexible seat of a co lapsible chair to the side rails thereof.
object of the invention is to provide fastening means of this character which ma be readil and easily assembled with the side rails and with the flexible seat and which binds and clamps the flexible seat to the side rails and entirely eliminates any possibility of the flexible seat becoming disenthe side rails, the arrangement the weight of the person sitting therein enances the clamping, binding and securing action of the fastening means;
Another object is to provide a fastening means having these advantages and which is also of simple and durable construction, reliable in operation and adapted to be manufactured at a comparatively slight expense from materials and by means of facllities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully de' scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompan ing drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a chair embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view through one of the side rails of the chair and show ing how the fastening means, flexible seat and side rails coact to secure the flexible seat to the side rail; and
Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 designates generally a chair shown asbeing of the collapsible type but which may be of any desirable type. The chair embodies side rails 2 supported at the upper ends of the legs 3 thereof, the side rails being inclined, as clearly shown in Figure 2. A collapsible seat 4 is provided and may be of canvas rangement thus far described seat is Wrapped around its side rail. once so that portions 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the seat complctely cover the associated channel shaped fastening element 9 is then slipped over the portions 5, 6 and 7. This channel shaped fastening element is made of metal having some resiliency and is of such a size and shape to grip the portions 5, 6 and 7 by virtue of its inherent resilienc and tension. If the seat 4 is formed wit hems along its edges, as it usually is, the end portions of the channel 9 are upset outwardly, as indicated at 10. With the ac:-
the channel shaped fastening element tends position or they might be displaced for other prevent displacement and to enhance their clamping action, the seat 4 has portions 11, 12 and 13 extended around the outsides of the chan nel and tending to draw the channel upwardly on the rail 2 and to cause its side flanges 9a; and its base 96 to more tightly clamp the portions 5, 6 and 7 of the side against the side rail, especially when the subjected to pressure, as when the chair-is beord the channels are protected against accidental displacement.
The invention clalmed 1s: A chair having rectangular side rails, a
flexible seathav-ingits ends coiledicompletely v around the side" rails, channels fitted over the side rails and embracing the portions of I the flexible seat wrapped around the side rails, theseat also having portions wound in Z 1 the same direction around the outside's of the channels and urging and compressing the same into clamping engagement with the portions of the seat interposed between said channels and rails andengaging"opposite faces of the rails and also preventing accidental displacement of the channels.
In witnesswhereof, 1 hereto afiix my signature.
