Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Builder-Motions for Spin-' ning or Winding Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to spinning or winding machines, and more particularly to the builder motions of such machines.
It is customary in looms of the feeler type, wherein the filling isto be changed prior to complete exhaustion of that in' the running shuttle, to provide certain preliminary windings or a bunch of the filling on the carrieror bobbin sufiicient in amount to permit the shuttle to lay filling in the shed for one or more picks after the feeler mechanism has indicated approaching exhaustion of the filling to thereby prevent a partial or full failure of the fillingto be laid prior to replenishment. In some forms of feeler mechanism, the carrier or bobbin is provided with a longitudinally-extendingslot, which, when the filling has reached a predetermined degree of exhaustion, is in tended to be uncovered by the filling to permit the entrance of the feeler, which thereupon initiates filling replenishment.
To effectively operate in the manner stated, it is necessary that the slot or opening in the filling carrier be properly exposed for the entrance-of the feeler, and that there still remain upon thecarrier or bobbin a sufiicient filling to insure continuity of filling laid in the shed after the feeler has indicated substantial exhaustion. Economy dictates, however, that the amount of filling remaining on the carrier or bobbin at the time of replenishment shall be as small as is consistent with proper continuity of filling laid in the shed after the call for replenishment. The shape of thewound mass upon the carrier'or bobbin should be such that a maximum load may be placed upon the bobbin or carrier.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, consists in placing upon a carrier or bobbin of the recessed or slot type,
residing at maximum traverse preliminary windings of filling of suflicient amount beyond one end of the slot to enable the shuttle to lay oneor "more full picks in the shed after substantial exhaustion of the fillmg and to cover the slot or recess of the carrier or bobbin by one or'more layers of filling in such manner as to insure complete and uninterrupted exposure of the slot or opening to the entrance of the feeler when substantial exhaustion should be indicated.
Another important feature of the invention consists in winding the bunch liminary windings beyond one end of the slot or recess in the carrier or bobbin with a short traverse, then imparting a long or to the windings to cover the slot or recess, and thereafter building the base of the wound mass with an intermediate and gradually increasing traverse and upon completion thereof to impart a service or regular traverse to the windings. By placing the filling upon the carrier or bobbin in the manner stated, a maximum amount of filling is laid thereon, and when the filling has reacheda predetermined degree of exhaustion in the weaving operation,-the windings covering the slot or recess are completely withdrawn from the carrier or bobbin to expose the full length of the recess or opening therein to the feeler -so that there will be no interference with defined by the claims.

Only one rod 10 is illustrated as connecting the way plate 9 to the traverse rail 13, but in practice there will be several of such rods,; de-
pending upon the length of. the frame, number of spindles, and the'like.
Secured to the traverse rail 13 is a lug 17 provided with an adjusting screw 18 adapted to engage an opposed lug 19 on anarm 20' adjustably secured to the rail 13 by.suitable means, such as the bolt 21, the construction being such that the arm-2.0 may be adhead 22 which bears against one endof the traverse screw 23. From this construction it will be apparent that any longitudinal movement given the traverse 'screw 23-will be transmitted as an up-and-down 'or traverse movement to-the way plate 9 and the bobbins or carriers 5. y
Depending from the beam 2 'is a bracket 24, Fig. 1, to which is pivotally connected at its lower portion, as 26, the swing frame 25 provided at its upper portion .with a swiveled and internally threaded block or nut 27 through which passes by threaded engagement, the traverse screw 23. The block 27 may be connected to "the swing frame in any appropriate manner, but as indicated in Fig. 1, the upper portion of the swing frame 25 is bifurcated and in such bifurcation 28 the block 27 is swiveled, as at 29, the construction being such that the traverse screw 23, may by turning movement, be movedlongitudinally with relation to the block 27 and swing frame 25. From this construction, it will be apparent that if the frame 25 be swungabout its fulcrum 26, that the traverse screw 23 and, the traverse rod 13 will be moved longitudinally and that by turning movement of the tiaverse screw 23-such longitudinal movement as is imparted by the swing frame 25 will bemodified. It will also'be apparent that any modification or variation in the swinging movement of the swing frame 25 will be transmitted to the screw and traverse rod.
It will be appropriate to describe one form of means for imparting swinging movement f to the swing frame and turning movement to the traverse screw, and thereafter the featureswhereby the actions of these parts are modified to accord with the desired ends to be secured.
Mounted in suitable bearings supported by the machine frame is the cam shaft 30 having mounted thereon the cam 31, Figs. 1 and 2. This shaft. may be driven from any suitable or convenient source of power to impart rotative movement to the cam 31. Adjustably pivoted upon the machine frame is the swing frame actuator, preferably comprising the arms 32, Figs. 1 and 2, pivotally connected at 33 in the slot 3 1 of a bracket 35 secured to the frame of the machine. The
swing frame actuator preferably has a roller 36 j ournaled between the arms 32 and adapted to bearupon the cam 31.
At the side opposite the roller 36 the swing frame actuator has a bearing surface, 37, Fig. 1, against which rides a roller 38 carried by the swing frame 25. From the construction thus far described, itwill be apparent'that the cam 31 will impart to the swing frame 25, through the swing frame actuator. and roller carried by the swing frame, a rocking movement about its fulcrum 26, and that such rocking movement of the swinging frame, will impartto the traverse screw and rod, and perforce to the bobbins or carriers on theway plate, movements longitudinally thereof. The gear 42 is in operative engagement with. a gear 44 through the idler gear 43. In order to connect the gear 44 with the traverse screw and permit such screw to move longitudinally under control of the swing frame, and also to permit such screw to be turned by hand to reset theparts for commencement of the winding operation, the following means ispreferably employed.
The gear 44 is mounted upon and se-' cured to a sleeve 45 which passes through the bearing 46 and has a limited longitudinal movement in said bearing. The sleeve 45 where it passes through the bearing 46 is preferably of somewhat smaller diameter, as at 47, than the main portion of the sleeve and is provided with a collar 48. The sleeve 45 is provided with a groove 49 adapted to be engaged by an arm 50 pivoted at 51 to the machineframe, whereby the sleeve is held normally in position with the gear 44 operatively engaged with the idler 43. By disengaging the arm 50 from the roove 49, the sleeve 45 may be moved longitudinally to disengage the gears 44 and 43.

gear 52 is provided with long and short' teeth, as indicated in Fig. 5, and is adapted at times to be engaged with and at other times to be disengaged from'the rack 53 to which is connected by suitable means, such as the bolt 56, the traverse slide 54 movable longitudinally of the swing frame 25 in suitable guideway, as 55. The bolt 56 is'preferably passed through the lower end portion 57 of the rack and threaded to the shoulder 58 of the traverse slide, but any suitable form of connection may be employed, the
essentials in this respect being that the position of the main traverse slide 54 on the swing frame 25 may be controlled by the rack 53 and gear 52, as will more fully appear.
as indicated by From the construction thus far described, itwill be seen that as the actuator 32 is moved by the cam 31, it will act upon the roller 38 which is carried by the traverse slide 54 through the means presently de-. scribed, to move the swing frame 25 to the right, Fig. 1, against the thrust of the traverse rod, way plate, and connected parts, and that the amount of movement thus'imparted to the swing frame and perforce, the way plate, will depend upon the position of the traverse slide 54 or the roller 38.
As hereinbefore stated, it is desirable in winding filling u'Ipon bobbins or other carriers havin a fee er slot or opening, to place a few pre lminary windings of filling beyond one end of the feeler slot or opening, and then to place a layer of windings over the entire slot or opening, so that as the filling carrier or bobbin is unwound in the loom, the entire slot or opening in the carrier will be opened or uncovered for the entrance of the feeler prior, to'or just about the time the filling draws from the preliminary windings. This insures unobstructed cotiperation between the feeler and the openin or slot in the carrier or bobbin.
he main traverse slide 54 is provided with transverse guideways for a transversely movable slide, which, for identification, may be termed the bunch builder slide. Between the side portions 61 of the bunch builder slide, Fig. 2, extends the rod 62 on which slides the cam follower 63 having portions 64 embracing the cross-piece 64 of the bunch builder slide,
whereby the cam follower 63 is adapted for movements transversely of the slide. The cam follower 63 is provided with an extension 65 adapted at times to engage the grooves of a rotating block or cam 66, and when freed therefrom to be moved to initial position at one side of the bunch builder slide by a suitable spring, such as 67, which 32, but when it is engagedwith the deeper portion .of the groove, the bunch builder slide will be permitted to move in theopposite direction under the weight of the way plate, filling carriers, and connected parts, as will be readily understood.

At the commencement of thewinding operation, the parts are relatively positioned as indicated 1n Fig. 1, wherein the traverse slide 54 and its connected rack 52 are shown in raised position on the swing frame 25 with the rack in engagement with the gear 52 on the shaft 51. Upon actuation of the cam shaft 30, motion is transmitted from a the cam 31 through the actuator, the bunch builder slide, andtraverse slide to the swing frame 25, the first movement of said parts effecting the traverse of the yarn uponthe filling carrier as indicated at 0;, Fig. 4. The next or upward traverse movement will lay the yarn,'as indicated at b, Fig. 4, the traverse I) being substantially of the same extent as the traverse a and varying therefrom only in a small increment due to the lowering of the traverse slide 54 and the turning movement of the screw 23. An appropriate number of such traverses may be laid upon the filling carrier to provide a suitable supply of filling in the preliminary windings, three of such traverses being indicated in Fig. 4. During this time, that is, during the formation of the preliminary windings ab, the traverse slide 54 was in raised position and the cam follower 65 was in engagement with the cam groove in the cam 66, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. As hereinbefore indicated, it is desirable that the feeler slot 0 in the bobbin d should be covered by one or more layers of filling having a traverse of maximum length and extending from the base portion of the preliminary windings over the entire slot 0 in the bobbin. To effect this maximum traverse, the cam 66 is provided with the deep grooved portion 7 O which, as the cam follower 63 moves transversely of the bunch builder slide, under the action of the worm or groove 69, engages the end of the cam follower and the weight of the way plate and the connected parts ,at once forces the swing frame to the left, thereby dropping the way plate and causing a maximum traverse to lay a layer of filling 0 over the feeler slot 0 of the carrier.
As the cam 66 continues to rotate, the cam follower 65 will gradually ride up the deep portion of the cam groove into the more shallow portion thereof. During this movement of the cam 66 and the cam follower, the traverse slide 54 has been gradually lowered through the gear. 52 and rack 53 until upon the completion of the maximum traverse e, the end of the follower 65 which was engaged with the cam 66, is lowered out of engagement therewith by the downward movement of the traverse slide 54, whereupon the spring 67 acts upon the follower 65. to return it to initial position. When the cam follower 65 is thus lowered by the slide 54 out of engagement with the cam 66, the rear edge portions 61 of the bunch builder slide 60 engage the longitudinal guideways 80, Figs. 2 and 3, and thereafter transmit the thrust due to the weight of the way plate and connected parts direct to the swing frame 25. As the traverse slide 54 continues to be lowered by means of the rack 53 and gear 52, the base portion of the Wound bobbin is formed by the traverse of gradually increasing length, until when the traverse slide 54 has reached its lowest position which may be determined by an adjusting screw 81 threaded into the lower portion 82 of the traverse slide 54, the base portion of the wound bobbin has been completed and the service or regular traverse will then be initiated and maintained throughout the remainder of the winding operation. In order to determine the low position of the traverse slide 54, the swing frame 25 may have a lowered portion 83, Fig. 3, against which the end of the adjusting screw 81 may contact; and when or about the time these parts come into contacting relation, the gear 52 and its connected screw 23 will have been moved to the left, Fig. 1, due to the rotation of the screw in the block 27, so that at such time the rack and gear become disengaged and remain so during the remainder of the winding operation.
The bobbins or filling carriers having now been completely wound, it becomes necessary to reset the parts for another winding operation; and to this end, the arm 50 is thrown out of engagement with the groove 49' of the collar 45, the latter is moved to disengage the gears 44 and 43, and is then turned by the hand wheel 84 to thereby turn back the screw. As the rod 51 and screw builder slide and its follower 65, is brought into engagement with a shallow portion of the groove in thecam 66, substantially as indicated in Fig. 2, whereupon the sleeve 45 is returned to normal position, the gears 44 and 43 operatively engaged, and the parts locked in such engaging relation by the arm 50.
It is sometimes desirable to ease the pressure between the actuator 32 and the bunch builder slide or its roller 38 as the parts are moved or returned to initial position in the manner hereinbefore described; and one appropriate form of means to this end consists of a hand lever 85 which may be appropriately pivoted at 86 to the machine frame and have a cam portion 87 to which may be secured a chain or other flexible connection 88, The flexible connection 88 may appropriately extend. over a guide pulley 89 supported on the machine frame as by the bracket 90, and the end of said connection may be secured to the hook 91 swiv'eled' in .the upper end of the swing frame 25, the
construction being such that upon movement of the handle 85 to the left, Fig, 1, the swing frame 25, screw 23, shaft 51, and connected parts to the way plate 9, may be moved relatively to the actuator 32 so that the upward movement of the traverse sl1de 54 may be facilitated.
The particulars of the means herem lllustrated and described constitute a good, practical and convenient form of the present invention; butit is obvious that changes may be made in the mechanical details without departing from the true scope of the actual invention, as the idea of means such as the traverse slide longitudinally movable of the swingframe and a bunch builder slide transversely movable relatively thereto to effect the formation of the wound filling carriers or bobbins is thought to be broadly new; and this and other features of the invention may be embodied in different form of means.
What is claimed is: Y
1. In a machine of the character described,
the combination'of a builder cam, a trav-' erse member, a movable frame between the builder cam and'traverse member, motion transmitting devices between the movable frame and builder cam to transmit motion to the frame from the cam, and means for automatically moving said devices longitudinallyand also transversely of the movable frame to effect variable movements to said frame and traverse member.
2. A builder motion for spinning or winding machines, comprising a cam, a traverse member, a movable frame between the cam and traverse member, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the said frame, a bunch builder slide mounted for movement transversely of said frame, and means for transmitting movement from said cam through the bunch builder slide to the traverse member. g
3. A builder motion for spinning or winding machines, comprising a cam, a traverse rod, a swing frame between the cam and traverse rod, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame, a bunch builder sl1de mounted for movement transversely of said frame, means for transmitting .movement from said cam through the bunch builder slide to the traverse rod, and means for effecting movement of the bunch builder slide transversely of the swing frame.
4. In a spinning or winding machine, the combination of a series of spindles for supporting filling carriers to be wound with filling, a traverse rod for effecting relative traverse movement of the filling carriers and filling as the latter is wound thereon," a cam for moving the traverse rod, and means between the cam and traverse rod for modifying the movement transmitted to said rod by the cam, comprising a swing frame, a traverse slide mounted thereon, and a bunch builder slide mounted on the traverse slide.
' 5. A builder motion for spinning or winding machines, comprising a cam, a'traverse rod, a swing frame between the cam and traverse rod, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame, a part carried by the traverse slide and through which the ,motion of the cam is transmitted to the swing frame, means for moving the traverse slide in one direction and said part in andles for supporting carriers or bobbins to be wound with filling, acam, means between "the cam and spindles for laying the filling on thecarriers by a short traverse to form prel minary windings and then a traverse of maximum length, and thereafter by service traverse, comprising a swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally thereof, a member carried by the traverse slide through which motion is transmitted from the cam to the swing frame, and means for causing said member to assume different positions transversely of the traverse slide to vary the movement of the swing frame.
7. A builder motion for spinning or winding machines, comprising a series of spindles for sup-porting carriers or bobbins to be wound with filling, a cam, means between the cam and spindles for laying the filling on the carriers by a short traverse to form preliminary windings and then a traverse of maximum length, and thereafter by service traverse, comprising a swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally thereof, a member carried by the traverse slide or cam for controlling the transverse position of said member relative to the swing frame.
. 8. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame, a slide movable transversely of the traverse slide and adapted to transmit movement from the cam to the swing frame, and means for moving the transversely movable slide transversely of the traverse slide.
9. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame, a slide movable transversely of the traverse slide and adapted to transmit movement from the cam to the swing frame, and a cam device mounted on the swingframe and adapted to act upon the transversely movable slide.
10. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame, 'a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame, a slide movable transversely of the traverse slide and adapted to transmit movement from the cam to the swing frame, a cam on the swing frame, and means between the trans- I versely movable slide and the cam on the swing frame .for determining the position of the slide.
11. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame, a traverse slide mounted on the swing frame, a bunch builder slide movable transversely-of the traverse slide,
an actuator for transmitting movement from the cam through the transversely movable slide to the swing frame, and means for moving the transversely movable slide to difl'erent positions transversely of the traverse slide.
12; A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame carrying a traverse slide and a block or cam having depressions of varying depths, and a bunch builder slide movable transversely of the swing frame in accordance with the depth of said depressions.
13. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame carrying a traverse slide movable longitudinally thereof, a rotatable block or cam mounted on the swing frame, a bunch builder slide movable transversely of the swing frame and adapted to transmit motion from the cam to the swing frame, and means for rotating said block or cam to vary the position of the bunch builder slide.
14. A builder motion, comprising a cam, a swing frame carrying a traverse slide movable longitudinally'thereof, a rotatable block or cam mounted on the swing frame, a bunch builder slide movable transversely of the swing frame and adapted to transmit motion from the cam to the swing frame, a follower between the bunch builder slide and rotatable block or cam, and means for araeeo rotating said block or cam to vary the position of the bunch builder slide.
15. In a spinning or winding machine,
the combination of a series of s indles for holding filling carriers having eeler slots, a traverse member, a cam for moving said member to effect relative traverse ofthe filling and carriers, and means for modifying the movement imparted to the traverse member by said cam, comprising a swing frame, a slide movable longitudinally and transversely thereof and a block or cam for determining the transverse position of the slide to effect preliminary windings of short traverse and feeler slot protecting winding of maximum-traverse.
16. In a spinning or winding machine, the combination of a series of spindles for holding filling carriers having feeler slots, a traverse rod, a cam for moving, said rod to eifect relative traverse of the filling and carriers, means for modifying the movement imparted to the traverse rod by said cam, comprising a swing frame, a slide movable longitudinally thereof, a second slide movable transversely thereof, a block or cam for determining the transverse position of the second slide to efl'ect preliminary imparted to the traverse rod by said cam,
comprising a swing frame, a slide movable longitudinally thereof, a second slide movable transversely thereof, a block or cam for determining the transverse position of the second slide to effect preliminary windings of short traverse and feeler slot protecting winding of maximum traverse, and means for moving the first-named slide longitudinally of the swing frame to effect winding of progressively increasing traverse to form the base of the wound carriers.
18. In a spinning or winding machine, the combination of a series of spindles for holding filling carriers having feeler slots, a traverse rod, a cam for moving said rod to efi'ect relative traverse of the filling and carriers, means for modifying the movement imparted to the traverse rod by said cam, comprising a swing frame, a slide movable longitudinally thereof, a' second slide movable transversely thereof, a block or cam for determining the transverse position of the second slide to efiect preliminary windings of short traverse and feeler slot protecting winding of maximum traverse, and means for moving the first named slide longitudinally of the swing frame to a limited extent to effect windings of progressively increasing traverse to form the base of the wound carriers and thereafter a uniform or service traverse.
19. In a spinning or winding machine, the combination of a cam, an actuator operated by said cam, a swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of' the swing frame and carrying an actuator engaging portion,-
a traverse rod and connected parts exerting thrust upon the swing frame to hold the ac-' tuator and said engaging portion in contact, and means fol-relieving the thrust between such parts when desired.
20. In a builder motion, the combination of a .cam and swing frame, a traverse slide movable longitudinally of the swing frame,
a bunch builder slide mounted for movement toward and from said cam relative to the swing frame, a cam follower, a block or cam adapted to engage sa1d follower at the commencement of the winding operation and after the preliminary windings have been wound to permit movement of the bunch builder slide transversely of the swing frame to lay windings of maximum traverse, and then to cause movement of the bunch builder slide in the opposite direction to lay windings of shorter traverse.
21. In a machine of thecharacter described, the combination of a series of spinv dles for supporting filling carriers to be wound with filling, a traverse member for effecting relative traverse of the filling carriers and filling as'the latter is wound therethe slide in directions transversely and longitudinally relative to the frame.
22. In a machine of the character described, -the combination of 'a builder cam, traverse mechanism for relatively'moving the filling carriers and filling as the latter is wound thereon, a movable frame connected to the traverse mechanism and actuatedfby said cam, and means for transmitting motion from the cam to the movable frame, said means including a member I scribed, the combination of a builder cam.
and traverse mechanism, a movable frame connected to the traverse mechanism, a
member interposed between the builder cam and movable-frame for transmitting motion from said camto the frame, means for moving said member longitudinally relative to the frame, and means for moving said member transversely relative to the frame for modifying the motion transmitted from the cam to said frame and traverse mechanism. 24. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a builder cam and traverse mechanism, a movable frame connected to the traverse mechamsm, a member interposed between the builder cam and movable frame for transmitting motion from said cam to the frame, means for moving said member longitudinally relative to the frame, and a cam for moving said member transversely relative to the frame.
25. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a builder cam and traverse mechanism, a movable frame for actuating the traverse mechanism, motion transmitting devices between the, cam and frame for modifying the movements of the frame, a rack and pinion for moving the said devices longitudinally of the frame,
and a cam for moving said devices transversely of the frame.
. 26. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a builder cam and traverse mechanism, a movable frame for transmitting movement from the cam to said traverse mechanism, a slide mounted on the frame for movement in two directions relative to said frame for modifying the movement imparted to the frame by the cam, and separate means for moving the slide in said two directions.
