KILLIAN v. n. ,LANSINGH, JR, on ALBANY, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEMENT IN MEN'S DRAWERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KILLIAN V. R.LANs1NGH, J r., of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Mens Drawers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of drawers which is manufactured more especially from woven fabric by cutting the said goods to the required shape, each leg consisting of a front and back portion and sewing the parts together. Drawers manufactured from such material possess but little elasticity, and being fastened around the ankle are liable to tear by the strain brought upon them at the knee by bending the leg. To partially prevent this result such drawers were made heretofore of considerable width, thus sacrificing the good fit of the garment in order to gain durability. The object of my invention is to produce drawers which will allow the limb all possible freedom of movement, and at the same time fit nicely without being liable to rupture. I accomplish this object by forming an enlargement at the knee in the front portion of the leg and by contracting the back portion thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of my improved drawers. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the enlargement formed by gathering the edges of the front portion. Fig. 3 is a view of the front portion of a leg spread out. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the rear portion of a leg.
Like letters designate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the fiont portion of a leg, and B the back portion of the same. In Figs. 3 and 4 both parts are represented as they are cut fi'om the fabric preparatory to sewing them together. a a are two triangular cuts or notches arranged in the front portion A, at the height of the knee, and running fi'om the edges thereof toward the middle. By sewing the edges of the cuts a a together the edges 0 c of the front portion are contracted or drawn together, and an enlargement or pocket, 0, is formed, which gives ample room for the projection of the knee in bending the leg. The edges 0 c originally exceed in length the edges of the back portion B, so that when the edges of the cuts a a are sewed together they will be of the same length as the edges of the back portion. 12 is a horizontal cut or slot formed in the middle of the back portion B at the height of the knee for the purpose of removing the superfluous material at that point. When the edges of this out are sewed together the back portion of the leg will be contracted, leaving the edges of said portion of their original length. d is a vertical cut, arranged in the middle of the lower part of the portion B, running from the bottom of the leg to a certain distance above the cut 12. This cut is of such a shape (Fig. IV) that when its edges are sewed together it will cause the garment to conform nicely to the leg.
The weight of my improved drawers, cut as hereinbefore described, is supported by the seams of the legs, which are of greater strength than other portions, and which leave the portion in front of the knees sufficiently loose to permit the bending of the leg without straining the cloth at that point, which renders the garment not only much more durable but also more comfortable to the wearer.
The enlargement in the front portion A may also be produced by gathering the edges of that portion at the knee, as shown at 0, Fig. II.
I claim as my invention Cloth drawers, as a new article of manufacture, having the front and back portions which form the legs thereof, cut or shaped as hereinbefore set forth.
KILLIAN V. R. LANSINGH, JR.
