1 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN ZURVALECZ, subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Martin, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Operated Fans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chair operated fans.

The primary object of the invention 'is'the provision of a chair-carried fan adapted for automatic actuation during the rocking movement of the chair whereby the occupant thereof may be fanned while being comfortably seated.

With this object in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a view partially in side elevation but with the operating mechanism shown in vertical section, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view partially in section of the operating mechanism of the device.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be noted that the same broadly consists in a rocking chair 1O operatively positioned upon a base 11 an air circulating fan 12 being arranged for automatic actuation during the rocking operation of the chair. The said base 11 is provided with a substantially H-shaped upright frame 13 rigidly secured thereto and having a segmental rack 14 pivotally attached as at 15 to one side thereof and extending through a slot 16 in the opposite side of the frame, the said rack being provided with a plurality of teeth 17 upon its lower curved edge.

A curved arm 18 is attached to the chair 50 back 19 and extends forwardly over the chair bottom 20 and is provided at its forward end with the said air circulating fan. The axle 22 of the said fan is journaled in the said end of the arm 18 and is provided with a pulley wheel 23. shaft 25 journaled therein and upon which shaft a gear 26 is secured which isin constant mesh with the rack teeth 17. The outer end of the shaft 25 is provided with a similar gear 27 which meshes with an idler 28 carried by the outer side 29 of the gear frame 24. Another shaft 30is journaled in the frame 2% above the afore-mentioned shaft 25, while a grooved wheel 31 is secured to the shaft 30 and fits over the upper edge of the rack let.

A beveled pinion 32 is keyed to the outer end of the shaft 30 and has a hub 33 in the form of a gear which is in constant mesh with the afore-mentioned idler 28.

An upright shaft 34: is journaled as at 35 to an upper corner of the gear frame 2% and is provided with a beveled pinion 36 in constant mesh with the afore-mentioned pinion 32. A pulley 37 is attached to the upper end of the shaft 34:, while a belt 38 passes over the two pulleys 37 and 23.

Normal positioning springs 39 connect the base 11 and front and rear portions of the chair 10 for normally maintaining the chair with the bottom thereof horizontally positioned.

In operating the device, the occupant of the chair being seated upon the chair bottom 20 rocks to-and-fro thereby longitudinally moving the rack 14 and the rack teeth 17 being in mesh with the gear 26 alternately turns the shaft 25 and by means of the gears 28 and 33 communicates motion to the pinions 32 and 36 for revolving the shaft 34: and pulley 37 alternately in different directions. The movement of the pulley 37 is communicated through the belt 38 to the pulley 23 and thus the air circulating fan 12 is alternately revolved in opposite directions thus agitating the air for the purpose of cooling the occupant of the chair.

While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claim.

What I claim as new is A device of the type described, including a base, a rocking chair positioned upon said base, an upright frame secured upon said base, the rear member of which frame has a slot near its upper end, a pivoted segmental rack upon said frame having a toothed lower edge, said rack being received movably within said slot, a gear frame carried by the chair, a shaft journaled in said gear frame,-a gear secured to said shaft Within said frame and in mesh with the teeth of said segment, a second shaft jour-- naled in said gear frame, a sheave secured to said second shaft Within the frame and receiving in its peripheral groove the upper edge of said rack, a stub-shaft journaled in said gear frame and a gear mounted thereon outwardly of the frame, an outwardly positioned gear mounted on the first named shaft, in mesh with the last named gear,
