FAN ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 738,429, dated September 8, 1903.

To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GERBER, a subj ect of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'aud use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a fan attachment for sewing-machines which is easily connected with sewing-machines of any construction and which may readily be removed or placed out of the way when the said attachment is not needed, a further object being to provide a fan attachment of the class hereinafter described and claimed which may quickly be adjusted to any desired position and which may also be connected with steamoperated machines without the necessity of afiixing any additional parts to said sewingmachine.
My invention is fully described in the following speoiflcation, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, suitable reference characters being employed to indicate the several parts thereof.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a a portion of the opcrating-table of an ordinary foot-operated sewing-machine upon which is mounted the usual arm I), said arm being also provided with the usual fly-wheel b upon which is mounted a pulley b of the usual construction and with which is connected the usual belt 19 which is in turn connected with the drivewheel of the machine in the usual manner.
In practice I secure a plate 0 upon the top of the operating-table C6 and to the rear of the arm I) and-fly-wheel W, as clearly shown, and directly over the plate 0 and hinged thereto, as shown at 0 is a supplemental plate 0 to which are secured two upwardly-directed stanchions c and 0 which support a top member 0 secured thereto, and passing though the supplemental plate 0 and into the plate 0 is a set-screw 0 which serves to hold the supplemental plate 0 to the plate 0.

Connected with the top and bottom of the vertical shaft 61 and free to revolve thereon are two yoke-shaped arms fand f and secured thereto and forming a frame therewith are two vertical rods f and f said rods serving as guides for a vertically-movable frame h, adapted to be secured at any point on said rods by means of set-screws 7L2. The frame 7t consists of a transverse inner plate it provided with openings h Through said rods pass, an outwardly-directed tube 71 secured to each end of the plate 72 and a transverse outer plate 72 secured to the outer ends of said tubes, and arranged, centrally of and loosely mounted in the transverse plates 71 and 72, is a shaft 2', the portion 11 of which between the said plates h and h is tubular and is provided with a longitudinal slot i through which passes a set-screw t which is held in a rod i slidably mounted in the tube i and on the outer end of the rod '6 is a bevel gearwheel 11, while on the inner end of the shaft 1; is another bevel gear-wheel 11 which is engaged by the bevel gear-wheel d on the verticalshaft d. Slidably mounted in each of the tubes h is a rod is, the outer ends of said rods 70 being secured to a frame k comprising side members 70 and transverse end members k and 70 to the member 10 of which the rods 7c are com nected,and the shaft member 71 passes through the end member 7a of the frame 70 the bevel thereon,the speed of the fan 11 depending upon the speed of the fly-wheel 19 When it is desired to dispense with the fan temporarily/the set-screw c is released and the supplemental plate 0 and all themechanism connected therewith is thrown back into the position shown in dotted lines, and if it is desired to raise the same higher all that is necessary is to release the set-screws 72,2 of the frame it, as well as the set-screw d of the bevel gear-wheel 01 place the fan at the desired height, and tighten the said set-screws.
It will be understood that the belt 6 is thrown off when the fan and mechanism thereof is thrown back out of the way, and the frame h and that formed by the yoke-shaped arms fand f may be swung on the pivotal point of the said arms, and as the center thereof is the shaft 01 the bevel gear-wheels (Z and 1' will always engage, and by means of this construction air may be sent in any desired direction, the friction between the arms fand f with the top member 0 and the plate 0 being sufficient to hold the said fan and frames in any desired radial position.
Althoughl have shown my fan attachment connected with a foot-operated sewing-machine, it will be evident that the same may be connected with the power-shaft of a steamoperated machine by merely changing the position of the belt b and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A fan attachment for sewing-machines, comprisinga plate detachably secured to the operating-table of said machine, a supplemental plate hinged thereto, a plurality of stanchions on said supplemental plate, a horizontal plate secured to the top of said stanchions, a frame pivotally mounted between said horizontal and supplemental plates, supplemental frames carried by said first-named frame, a fan rotatably mounted in one of said supplemental frames and means for operating said fan, substantially as shown and described;
2. A fan attachment for sewing-machines, comprising a base-plate, a support mounted thereon, a pivoted frame on said support, a verticallymovable frame on said pivoted frame, a rod slidably mounted in each of the side members of said vertically movable frame, a supplemental frame secured to the outer ends of said rods, a fan mounted on said supplemental frame, and means connected with said sewing-machine for operating said fan, substantially as described.
3. A fan attachment for sewing-machines, comprising a base-plate, a support mounted thereon, a pivoted frame in said support, a vertically movable frame on said pivoted frame, a longitudinally movable frame mounted in said vertically-movable frame, a shaft passing through said longitudinallymovable frame, a fan on the outer end of said shaft, a bevel gear-wheel on said shaft, a telescopic shaft in said vertically-movable frame consisting of a tube and a rod mounted therein, a bevel gear-wheel on said rod and engaging said first-named bevel gear-wheel, a supplemental bevel gear-wheel on the inner end of said tube, a vertical shaft on said base-plate and said support, a bevel gear-wheel on said vertical shaft, a supplemental bevel gearwheel, adjust-ably mounted on said vertical shaft and engaging the bevel gear-wheel on said tube, a horizontally-arranged shaft in said support, a bevel gear-wheel on the end of said last-named shaft, said bevel gearwheel engaging the first-named bevel gearwheel on said vertical shaft, a pulley on said horizontally-arranged shaft in said support, and means for connecting said pulley with a rotatable member of said sewing-machine, substantially as shown and described.
