Specification of Letters Patent.
App1ication filed March 18, 1911. Serial No. 615,295.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. BORKEN- HAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flying- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in biplanes and comprises an apparatus having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of a part of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a.
motor, the shaft A of which has fixed thereto a beveled gear A which is in mesh with a beveled gear B which is loosely mounted upon a shaft B which is loosely journaled in the standards H of the frame. A
sprocket wheel A is fixed to rotate with the gear wheel B which is loosely journaled in the standards H of the frame. A sprocket chain 0 passes about the sprocket wheel A and a similar sprocket wheel A which is fixed to the driving shaft A journaled in the upper portions of the standards H. Said shaft A has fixed thereto a beveled gear D which is in mesh with a beveled wheel 0 fastened to the shaft 0 which is journaled in a suitable bearing 0 upon the cross-piece O connecting the two planes F, F. A propeller having arms 0 is fixed to the shaft 0 and has blades 0 thereon disposed at inclinations to one another.
Fastened to the shaft B are the pulleys 1 and I designate belts, each passing about a pulley I and about a pulley I which is fastened to a cross-piece I connecting the two planes F. It will be noted that each of the planes F is recessed away as at F to allow the planes to swing freely without interference from the sprocket chain 0 or the cross-piece C A shaft L is journaled in an aperture in the standard A and also in the oke A and has a beveled gear L at its orward end which is in mesh with a beveled gear L' fixed to the-shaft B. A pulley L is fixed to the shaft L and a rope L passes about said pulley and also about a pulley L which is fixed to the crank shaft L forming a means whereby the operator, by turning the crank, may cause the shaft L to rotate and also the aeroplanes to swing from horizontal to a vertical position or vice versa.
Seats N are mounted upon the movable platform N and a cable or rope N is fastened to one end of the platform and passes about a pulley N thence about a pulley N which is fixed to the shaft B. Said cable or rope, after passing about the pulley N passes forward about a pulley N shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, thence passes rearward and about a pulley N and is fastened to the rear edge of the seat. By this mechanism, it will be noted that the operator by turning the crank L may cause the biplanes to swing from horizontal to vertical positions and vice versa and at the same time, in the event of the biplanes being turned in vertical positions, to cause the platform carrying the seat to be drawn toward the biplanes or, when the shaft L is turned in the reverse direction, to cause the plat-form to be moved farther from the biplanes when the latter are horizontally disposed, thus forming a means for changing the center of gravity which, to balance the apparatus, should be as near as possible un- Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
derneath the biplanes when the latter are a vertically disposed but, when in the position shown in Fig. 3, may be farther therefrom.
A rudder Q, has pintles Q mounted in suitable hearings in the frame of the apparatus and is provided with cords or chains Qj" which pass over the pulleysQF, thence over the pulley Q fastened to the rotatable shaft Q, which is journaled at its forward end in the yoke A and its rear end in the frame of the apparatus. A pulley Q is fastened to the shaft Q and a cable Q passes about said pulley and also a pulley M mounted upon the crank shaft M and forming means whereby the operator, by
turning the crank M, may cause the rudder to swing in one direction or the other.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows When it is desired to cause the apparatus tobe elevated, the aeroplanes may be swung to vertical positions by the operator turning the crank L causing the shaft L to rotate and also the shaft B which is geared thereto.
The shaft B being put in rotation will impart a rotary movement to the pulleys I which are fastened to the cross-pieces I connecting the biplanes, thus throwing the same to verticalpositions. As the shaft B rotates, the platform will be drawn toward the biplanes to get the center of gravity as near as possible thereto, the drawing for ward of the platform being made possible by the cable N which is fastened to the seat and passes about the pulleys as shown clearly in Fig. 4c of the drawings.
What I claim to be new is 1. An automatic lifting and balancing biplane comprising a frame having standards,
an upper and a lower horizontally disposed shaft mounted in suitable bearings in said standard, aeroplanes, cross-pieces connecting said planes and holding the same in parallel relation and fastened to the upper of said shafts, a gear wheel fixed to said upper shaft, a propeller shaft mounted in a suitable bearing in one of said cross-pieces and driven by said gear wheel, a pulley upon the lower of said shafts, a pulley fixed toI one of the cross-pieces, a belt about said' pulleys, a beveled gear wheel upon said 2.
