INSPECTION-OPENING FOR MATTRESSES, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. to, rear.
Application filed April 14, 1916. Serial No. 91,105.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CYRUs H. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nutley, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inspection-Openings for Mattresses, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of mattresses and particularly to the outer covering or envelop.
Manufacturers of mattresses, and particularly of the higher grades, and dealers handling their goods desire to exhibit the materials forming the filling or body of the mattress, both as a protection against the cheaper grades with which they are thrown in competition, and for the purpose of showing to customers the quality of their goods. For a like reason manufacturers of the bet- -ter grades of mattresses wish to provide their mattresses with some means by which their contents may be inspected.
The object of my invention is to provide the covers or outer envelops of mattresses with inspection openings that are normally held in closed position by readily detachable fasteners and yet without marring their appearance or in any manner interfering with their use.
It has heretofore been proposed to closethe opening of a pillow slip or of an outer mattress cover through which the pillow or mattress is inserted by means of snap fasteners after the manner of closing a placket opening. In all such prior devices, however, the openings have been in the sides of the cover and the opening is closed by overlapping one margin of the goods upon the other. In my invention the margins of material upon either side of the opening are brought together in a manner to form an outstanding rib and which preferably extends between the projecting marginal binding strips extending around the upper and lower edges of the mattress cover and also preferably forms a projecting corner rib extending diagonally outward from the corner edge, thus taking the place of the usual outstanding corner binding strip to protect the mattress at this point and form a bracing rib between the upper and lower marginal binding strips.
In the accompanying drawings Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a corner section of a mattress embodying my invention;
and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The cover or envelop 1 of the mattress may be tufted in the usual manner if desired, and is provided with outstanding marginal binding strips 2. At one or more points in the side members 1*, I form an insp ection opening. by bringing together and abutting for a certain width the respective margins 41, 5 of material to form an outstanding rib, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. These abutting marginal portions are secured at the top and bottom to the projecting marginal binding strips 2, which maintain them in position and prevent them from shifting in either direction. The cooperating members 6, 7, of snap fastening devices are secured in the opposite abutting margins to permit them to be readily secured together or opened for inspection of the mattress body or filling 9. For the purpose of protecting the filling material opposite the opening, I may attach a flap 10 of suitable material along one edge to the inside of the side member 1 adjacent the opening, the free end being inserted between the cover and the filling upon the opposite side of the opening.
When the inspection opening is closed by means of the fastening, as shown in Fig. 1, the abutting margins 4, 5 form a duofold or reinforced outstanding rib which conforms to the other marginal strips, and cooperates with the upper and lower marginal binding strips to protect the corner, this reinforced edge rib forming a brace or tiemember connecting the upper and lower marginal binding strips.
The advantages to be derived from my invention will be obvious to every one but they will be especially appreciated by manufacturers and dealers of mattresses. I have described in detail the structural features illustrated in the accompanying drawings for the purpose of disclosing an embodiment of my invention, but I am aware that various modifications and changes may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims and without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A cover for mattresses, pillows and the like, comprising an envelop of suitable fabric adapted to inclose the body thereof, having the meeting sides at a corner thereof provided with free ends adapted, to abut and form an outstanding strip or rib, and detachable fastening devices carried by the adjacent margins of said ends to thereby permit the ready exposing of the interior or body of the mattress.
2. A cover for mattresses, pillows and the like, comprising an envelop of suitable tabric adapted to inclose the body thereof, having meeting free edges at a point in the side portion thereof adapted to abut to form a reinforced outstanding rib, and detachable fastening devices secured in the adjacent margins of said meeting edges, the opposite ends of said marginal portions being secured respectively to the top and bottom members of the envelop.
3. A mattress, pillow or like device, having a body portion and a cover or envelop of suitable material provided With top, bot tom and side members, the meeting edges of the top and sides and of the bottom and sides having projecting marginal portions, one corner of the side member having an opening adapted to be closed by abutting the margins of the material upon either side of the opening to form an outstanding rib, and detachable fastening devices carried by said margins, the opposite ends of said marginal portions being secured respectively to the adjacent projecting marginal portions of the top and bottom members.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
CYRUS H; YOUNG.
