The screws 21 are retained in the hori- :font-al position at right angles to the members 1 and 2 of the vise by the nuts 26, which nuts 26 are adapted to bear against the front surface of the member 1 upon the respective sides ofthe slots 23. A screw thread is formed on the horizontal member or screw 21 for the reception of the nut 26.
vThus it will be obvious that by turning forward said nuts 26 the ends of said screws 21 will be raised, while by turning them back they will be lowered, said nuts 26 being adjusted so as to retain said screws 21 in the horizontal position beneath the -book while said screw is raised and lowered by turning thenuts 2l downwardly and upwardly, whereby the back of the book is brought on substantially the same plane as the upper edge of the clamping plates 19. Then the .book has been thus adjusted it is securely clamped between the clamping plates 19, 19 by turning forwardly the screws 3, 3. This being done a series of notches are filed or otherwise cut in the back of the book corresponding with the guide notches 27 formed in the upper edges of the plates 19, 19. Said notches 27 serve to guide the file or other instrument while cutting the notches in the back of the bock. A binding cord is then inserted in the notches of the book and a quantity ot' glue is placed upon the edges of the book whereby the leaves of the book are securely held in place. When this is done the book is taken out of the vise and an additional iiuantity of glue is placed above the 'binding cord and the cover 23 of the book is then put in place upon the leaves when the book is again placed between the clamping jaws of the vise. Before placing the book a second time between the jaws of the vise the creasing plates 29, shown in Fig. 6,
are secured to the clamping plates 19, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, when the jaws or' thc vise arc again brought together by turning forward the clamping screws 3, whereby the angular flanges 30, off said creasing plate, are forced firmly against the respective sides of the cover of the book, thereby forming the creases 31, 31 in the cover and the bodyl of the book, whereby the cover is permanently secured to the book.
The creasing plates 29 are provided at their respective ends with the U shaped loop members 32, 32, which are adapted to be slid down over the ends of the clamping plates 19, as shown in Fig. 3, while the upper edges of said clamping plates are also preferably provided with U shaped bends 33, 33, which are adapted to engage the upper edge of the clamping plates and retain said creasing plates in their proper relative positions to said clamping plates as they are Vbeing used, and as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The member 1 of the vise is supported from the member 2 by Athe angular bracketsl 34,34 and 35, 35. The angular bragketsfl are rigidly securedto the member 2 by the screws 36 while the brackets 25 are secured to the member 1 by the screws 37, 37, whereby the upper ends of the members l and 2 are always retained upon the same plane.
Having thus described my'invention, what I claim as new, and desire 'to secure by Let ters Patent, isl ,1. In a. device of the described class, the combination of a )air of vertical clamping members connected together by a plurality of screws, a pair of clamping plates 'each plate being provided at its upper end with a series of guide notches, means securing said clamping plates to said vertical members, and means for moving said vertical ymembers toward and romeach other.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a pair of vertical clampin members, a pair of clamping plates eac plate being provided at its upper edge with a series of guide notches, means securing said clamping plates to said vertical `members, means for moving said vertical members toward and from each other, a pair of creasing plates, and means for temporarily securing said creasing plates to'saidclamping plates.
3. In a dezi of the described class, the combination of a pair of vertical members, a plurality of clamping screws connecting said members together, a pair of clamping plates secured to said vertical members, each clamping plate being provided at its upper edgewith aseries of guide notches, a book holder, and means for supporting said bookholder at different elevations between said clamping plates.
4. In a device of the described class, the combination of a pair of vertical members each provided with two elongated slots for the reception of adjustable book supporting members, book supporting members, means for adjustably holding said book supporting members at any desired point of adjustment in said slots, a book holder for holding the book while being sewed, said book supportingr members being adapted to be raised and lowered according to the width of the book being bound, a pair of notched clamping plates adapted to be supported from the upper ends of said vertical clamping members.
5. A bookbinding vise comprising two ver tical clamping members, each provided with a plurality of vertical slots, means for supporting the upper ends of said clamping members in the same plane, an angular bracket-aiiixed to the front side of one of said clamping members, an angular member comprising two screws connected together at right angles to each other, one of said screws being 'adjustably supported in said vertical @lots and the other screw adjustably supported upon saidangular bracket, a pair of' horizontally arranged s'orews, means for retaining the horizontal member of said screws in a horizontal position, and means for adjusting and retaining said horizontal screws at a lower or higher plane in said slots, a
pair of clampingscrews revolubly support-v ing members.
