- This invention consists in the arrangement of a ring-bracket capable of supporting a hemispherical cup, in combination with a gas-burner which extends over the ring-bracket in a horizontal direction, in such a manner that if the hemispherical cup is filled with water and the gas is lighted the illuminating power of the flame will be concentrated by the water to a limited space below said cup, and thereby a gaslight is obtained which is of great advantage for artists of diii'erent classes or for any purpose where a concentrated light is required.

IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,234, dated November 2B, 1871 antedated November 16, 1871.
Tov all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs CUPPERs, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in llluminating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a sectional side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a ring-bracket capable of supporting a hemispherical cup, in combination with a gas-burner which extends over the ring-bracket in a horizontal direction, in such a manner that if the hemispherical cup is filled with water and the gas is lighted the illuminating power of the flame will be concentrated by the water to a limited space below said cup, and thereby a gaslight is obtained which is of great advantage for artists of diii'erent classes or for any purpose where a concentrated light is required.
In the drawing, A designates a ring-bracket, the slotted arm a of which can be placed over a nipple projecting upward from a gas-pipe, B. After the arm has been adjusted over the nipple it is secured in position by means of an elbow, b, inthe horizontal shank of which is secured the gas-burner c. Into the ring-bracket is placed a hemispherical cup, C, made of glass or other transparent material, and provided with a flange which serves to retain it in the bracket, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bracket A and cup C are so adjusted under the gas-burner c, by means of the slotted arm a., that when the gas is lighted the flame will be over the center of the cup. When the cup is filled with water or other suitable liquid the light emitted by the ame is concentrated on a circular space below the cup, the diameter of which space depends upon the distance between the plane intercepting the light and the cup, and an artist or workman of any kind is enabled to concentrate the light on the spot where he requires the same, while, at the same time, sufficient light is emitted by the name to show the objects in the room where the light is burning.
By this means an illuminating apparatus is obtained which is of great advantage to watchmakers, lithographers, engravers, or artists or workmen of any kind, wherever it may be desirable to produce a concentrated light on a certain space.
My experiments show that by the application of my concentrating-cup toa gas-burner the light is increased at least four times, so that an ordinary two-foot burner, with my concentrating-cup, produces a light of greater intensity than a sixfoot burner without such concentrating-cup.
If desired, a dome, shade, 0r globe may be placed over the burner, so as to increase the light still further.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rin g-bracket A supporting the suspended cup C, in combination with the gas-burner extending horizontally over the cup, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The slotted arm a, on the ring-bracket, in combination with the cup C and burner c, as set forth.
