Nol 121,196. Patented Nov. 21,1371.y
UNITED STATES f2; QFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADVERTISING SHOW-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,196, dated November 21, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REIFF, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Advertising Show-0ase, of which the following is a specification l:
My invention relates to improvements in advertising-cases containing movable card-holders, operated by motive power 5 and my improvement y consists in devices, fully described hereafter, for
operating the card-holder and for regulating the operation of a music-box arranged adjacent to the case.
Figure l is a perspective view, partly in section, of my improved advertising show-case. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line l 2, Fig. l.
A represents a counter or stand, upon which rests a showcase, B, the latter having glazed ends, front, and top, and being provided with a hinged door or back, which may be faced with the usual mirror. Within the case, adjacent to the front of the same, is a long cylinder or prism, C, having bearings in standards e a. The surface of this cylinder or prism is arranged in any suitable manner for the attachment of advertising-cards. rIhe space to the rear ofthe cylinder is divided into compartments c, which serve as receptacles for cigars or other articles placed within the show-case. To one end of the cylinder or prism is secured a cog-wheel, d, with which, through an opening, x, formed in the top of the counter and the bottom of the show-case, gears a larger cog-wheel, rl', on a horizontal shaft, e, having bearings in one end of the counter and in a standard, f. Motion is transmitted from a vertical shaft, h, through bevel-gearing i, to the shaft e, the said shaft h being secured to a turbine water-wheel inclosed within a casing, E, to the interior of which water, under pressure, is conducted through a pipe, p, the latter being provided with an ordinary stop-valve to regulate and stop the iiow of water, when desired. IVithin the counter or stand A, adjacent to the waterwheel, is arranged an ordinary musical box, F. To one end of a spindle, r, turning in bearings on the top of the said musical box, is secured a pin-wheel, t, to which an intermittent motion is imparted by means of a pin, y, on the side of the cog-wheel d', and to the opposite end of the said spindle is secured a cam, tf. The cam t bears upon one end of a lever, m, hung to the top of the musical box, at right angles to the spindle r, and as the said cam revolves, gradually raises and suddenly lets fall at regular intervals the opposite weighted end of the-lever, which, striking and depressing the spring-pin o, starts thc instrument, or changes the tune if the instrument has been already started.
In connection with the above arrangement a sliding catch, fv, under the control of an attendant, may be used for the purpose of raising one arm of the lever m above the start e, and of lowering its opposite arm to a point beneath and free from contact with the cam t.
As the movement of the cylinder O, imparted to it from the water-wheel, is continuous, the advertising-cards attached to the same are successively displayed to View, through the top and front of the case, to purchasers standing before the latter. Further attention is attracted to the advertisements and also' to the contents of the show-case by the musical box, which may be operated continuously or at intervals.
In some cases a pyramid, cone, or other object upon which advertisements can be arranged, might be substituted for a cylinder or prism, and might be placed in any position within the case, either in the center or at the back, or in a vertical insteadof a horizontal position.
- I claiml. The combination of the show-case, a longitudinal roller, c, adapted to receive and retain a series of cards, gear and cog-wheels d d', and sha-ft h, all being arranged as specified and operated by a turbine, E, or its equivalent, to impart a continuous rotary motion to the roller, as specified.
2. The combination of the motor E, its shaft and wheel d', pin y, gears, and the spindle r, pinwheel t, and lever m, for regulating the operation of the music-box, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speci'cation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. H. REIFF.
