PATENT OFFICE.
AARON BAUMAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKETS FOR CHAIN-PUMPS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,148, dated November 21, 1871.
ToY all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON BAUMAN, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Chain-Pump Buckets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in buckets for chain-pumps; and the novelty consists in providing the bucket with a hollow screw, through which the link passes and allows the bucket to oscillate, so as to take out all the trash from the chain and prevent its catching in the wood. It also consists in the application of an elastic plate, which allows the buckets to raise more water.
y In the accompanying drawing which illustrates this invention, A represents the bucket, composed of the top and bottom disks a, inclosing between them the rubber ring b, which projects beyond the edges of the disks and touches the surface of the pump-tube, thereby preventing the water from falling back or leaking around the edges of the buckets. B represents a hollowr screw passing through the center of the bucket and formed with a iiange, b', to rest against the lower disk, and holding on its upper end a nut, b, to keep it in place. O indicates a link hav-i ing a rounded shank which passes through the hollow screw B, and a thread cut on its lower end to hold a nut, B. This link couples the bucket to the chain or loop hanging from the under side of the next bucket above it. The loop is represented in the drawing and marked D. The arrangement of the hollow tube and link allows the bucket to oscillate, so as to keep the chain straight and prevent its catching in the tube and hindering the perfect operation of the pump. Any kind of a tube which may be rigidly secured to the bucket will obviously answer the purpose of a hollow screw, although the screw device is the most preferable, and for this reason the rubber packing will naturally wear from constant use, so that in order to keep its edges properly distended a pressure may be brought to bear between the plates, according as it wears; and this is readily done by tightening up the screw.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bucket A, having a central hollow screw or tube, B, swiveling it to the link O, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the hollow screw B,loop D, plates a, rubber b, and link C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AARON BAU'MAN.
