This invention relates to a foot adapted SEWING-MACHINE FooT. y
To all wl-0m t may concern Be it known that I, LILLIAN PAGE, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Packwaukee, in the county of Marquette and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Feet, of which the following is a specicato be applied to a sewing machine and it consists in the novel features hereinafter de'- scribed and claimed. l
An object of the invention is vto provide an attachment of the character indicated adapted to be applied to the arm or other part of a sewing machine and which serves as means for protecting` the fingers of an operator from the action of the needle while sewing. i
The present invention may be used in lieu of the ordinary pressure foot now generally employed upon a sewing machine and the attachment will perform the same useful functions as the said pressure foot.
With the above object in View the improved foot comprises a plate of sheet metal having a slotted end portion adapted to be applied to the bar or standard of the machine by the use of a set or similar screw.
The plate is provided with aA slotted depressed ortion through which the needle of the mach y sides of the said slot the plate is provided with upstanding flanges having notches at their upper edges through which the thread' may be passed when the needle is belng.
threaded. The said plate is further providedat ,oneend with upstandingI- tongues adapted yto serve asshields andprevent the fingers ofthe operatorfrom getting under vthe needle.
In theaccompanying drawing, Figure'l isa perspective view of the foot, showing the same applied to a machine. The other figures are detail views of the structure of the foot. y
The foot is formed from a piece of sheet metal having a slotted endy l. The screw or other securing device which is used for attaching the foot to the machine is passed through the slot of the end portion 1 and the improved foot may be used in lieu of the usual pressure foot employed upon a sewi Specification of Letters'Patent.

ing machine. From the slotted'end portion .y
l the plate is extended down as at 2 ap- ;vproximately at a right'angle to the plane in v which the surface of the. slottedsend portion 1 lies. From the lower edge of the eX- tension 2 the plate is extended in the form of a ledge8 which is slotted'at one end as at 4. The material of the plate beyond the ,opposite edgesof the slot 4 is folded over upon the upper surfacevof the ledge 3- and is then extended vertically forming flanges 5 located at the opposite sides of the slot 4. The said anges 5 are provided at theirfupper edges with notches 6 vthrough which the thread may be passed during lthe operation of threading the needle of .the machin'e. Curved `tongues l7- are provided at the slot- 'ted end of the'ledge portion Sand the said,
tongues are located at the opposite side edges `of the'slot 4. When the device is applied to 'a sewing machine it is secured in position by means of a set screw 8 which passes through the slot of the end portion l and secures the said 'end portion to the lower end of the standard or bar 9 of the sewing machine. -The needle indicated r at 10 is vadapted to operate through the slot 4 of the ledge portion 3 during the operation of sewing. From the above description/'taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a foot piece of sim le and durable structure is provided and t at the same when applied to the standard or b ar of a sewing machine will perform all of the functions of the usual pressure foot and at the same time the parts and features of the improved foot are so disposed as to effectually rotect the fingers of the operator during t e sewing operation.
Having described the invention claimed is v A sewing` machine pressure foot compris-v ing a single piece offsheet metal having a slot, and folded upon itself at its side 'edges and having flanges extending upwardly from said folded portions.
In testimony whereof-I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
