its sides angular and formed with fingers tively soft metal, such as lead, whereby to engage with the portion of the tire to be riveted vto permitf'of; openings being punched through the tire to receive the rivets, the oppositeiend offthenswinging;.member having an upwardly extending portion terminating in a rounded or cone-shaped head or anvil which is of steel or other hardened metal whereby after the rivets have been passed through the openings and the washer arranged upon tlle ends of the said rivets, the said anvil will form a contact member against which the ends of the rivets are compressed and bent against the washer, when 30 the said rivets are subjected to an impact of force, such as the blow from a hammer.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a device of this character that is so constructed and arrangedas to be readily L swung to a desired operative position.
With the above and other objects in' view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specilication and fall- 40 ing within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line l 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 4.-/1 of Fig. 3, and- Fig. 5' is a perspective view of the soft metal member employed.
While it is not essential in carrying out my invention in practice, preferably I employ a bench which is indicated by the numeral 1 and which may be .of any desired construction. Upon the table 1 and projecting beyond one of the sides thereof Spcification of Letters Patent.

I secure a plate 2 and on theportion of the plate projecting a suitable distance beyond the side of the bench I provide a centrally arranged-bearing opening 3 through which passes a bolt or other pivot member 1 that pivotally connects the base of the improvement to the said base 2. The pivot member 4l may have-its lower end threaded whereby to receive a nut to sustain the pivot properly upon the said, plate 2 and upon the improvement. The improvement contemplates theemployment of a base 5 preferably comprising a substantially rectangular metal plate, the said plate having one of its ends either integrally formed with orsecured thereon an angular side member 6. The side membei1 6, adjacent to the upper edge thereof is provided upon itsinner face with a pair of spaced angularly arranged members which vhave their inner faces rounded or of an arcuate formation and providing the sides 6 with spaced fingers 7 These fingers are adapted to receive therebetween and to sustain the side plate 6 a disk of soft metal, such as lead and which is indicated by the numeral 8. The disk includes an inner flat face which rests against the upper portion of the side 6 and an outer rounded face which is engaged by the outer faces of the finger 7.
Upon the base 5, adjacent to the upper end thereof provided with the angular side 6 I preferably removably secure an upwardly extending or standard member 9 which has its upper end provided with a rounded or cone-shaped head 10 providing the standard with what I will term an anvil and the said anvil is of some suitable hardened metal, such as steel.
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: The bench provides for the reception of the tire and for the tools used in riveting the tire as well as the rivets. The device is swung upon its pivot to bring the angular side of the same to a vposition convenient to the operator, preferably over the bench. The tire, at the portions thereof to be punched is brought over the lead disk 8, and suitable openings are made in the said tire by a punch which, when subjected to an impact of force, such as the blow from a hammer will enter the disk but will not destroy the disk. When all of the openings are made by the punch rivets are passed through the alining openings in the overlapping portions of the tire and washer members are placed upon the ends of the rivets. The tire, during the process of inserting the rivets has been removed from the improvement and the swinging member is turned inward so that the anvil will be brought over the punch or to a convenient position with respect to the operator. The ends of the rivets are placed upon the anvil and the heads of the rivets are given a blow of the hammer, compressing the ends of the said rivets to widen the same and to force the same into engagement with the outer faces of the washers.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. In a device for the purpose set forth, a pivoted member having an angular side, fingers upon the side, a disk adapted to be received between the lingers, and an anvil upon the member disposed opposite the said angular side.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a revoluble member including a flat base, said base having an angular extension at one of the ends thereof, fingers formed upon the inner face of the said angular member, a disk adapted to be received between the said fingers, a standard upon the base adjal cent to the end thereof opposite that provided with the angular member, and the upper end of the said standard being enlarged and of a substantially cone-shaped formation in plan, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a bench having a plate extending beyond one of the sides thereof, a member including a base which is centrally pivotally connected to the extension of the base, said base having an angular side at one of the ends thereof, angularly disposed fingers upon the inner face of the side adjacent to the outer edge thereof, said fingers having their inner faces of an arcuate formation, whereby to receive the rounded face of a disk therebetween and retain the inner flat face of the disk against the said side, a standard removably secured to the base and said standard having its outer end formed with a substantially coneshaped anvil.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
FRED F. MILLER.
