Be it known that I, JOHN C. UI-ILEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non- Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in non-reillable bottles and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying draw'- ings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustratemy invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view through a neck of a portion of the bottle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the upper portion of the valve retaining part of the neck. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a disk and valve seat. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the disk, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the part shown in section in Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bottle having a stub neck B circumferentially threaded and adapted to be engaged by the threads formed in the inner surface of the neck C. Said neck has a shoulder D formed therein and the neck is designed to contain the operative parts of the device. A valve retaining member E, having a tapering apex, is inserted within the neck of the bottle and is adapted to bear against said shoulder, as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings, and said member is provided with legs F, shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 5, which are spaced apart, leaving sufficient means for allowing the liquid to pass out between said legs, which latter project beyond the circumference of the member, as shown in Fig. 5. A circularoutlined shell K is provided with legs N projecting at right angles therefrom and spaced apart, the upper ends `of said legs being inclined and slightly concaved as at N and provided with notches I and a central opening O. The marginal edge of said opening forms a seat for the hollow valve R, the lower end of which is formed on the arc of a sphere, the point of contact be Specification of Letters Patent.

It will be noted that a chamber is provided intermediate the legs N and the bell retaining member E in which a gravity ball T is mounted and which tends to normally hold the hollow valve R seated when the bottle is in an upri ht or in aI position inclined down below iorizontal plane. A washer P, preferably of cork or other suitable material, is placed upon the inner end of the stub neck B and, when the neck is screwed over the part B, a hermetically sealed joint will be afforded. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings that at the free ends of the legs F are ribs H which are designed to engage said recesses or notches I formed in the upper ends of the legs N.
When the parts are assembledthe neck C is designed to be securely held in place by cement, making it impossible to remove the same without being` broken. The valve will be normally held seated by the gravity ball. In the event of it being desired to dispense liquid from the bottle, it may be done by tilting the bottle until it assumes such a position that the ball will be free from the valve, allowing the latter to unseat. rIhe spaces between the legs N and between the legs F will allow' the liquid to be dispensed without interference. In the event lof it being desired to refill the bottle, when held in a position inclined toward the horizontal, the inclined surface of the member E will `cause the ball to roll against the valve and hold the same seated. In the event of an attempt being made to refill the bottle when inverted and by creating a vacuum, the valve being hollow and independent of the weight. will float and, as the liquid rises in the neck, the valve will be lifted to its seat, thus effcctually closing the opening.
IVhat I claim to be new is l. A non-refillable bottle having a neck with a shell therein, provided with a central aperture, the marginal edge of which forms a valve seat, said shell having arms projecting therefrom which are spaced apart and their opposite faces tapering, the upper end of each arm concaved, a hollow valve with a semi-spherical end adapted to seat on the marginal edge of the opening in the shell, a gravity valve-closing ball and a conical- 'los shaped ball retaining .memberv within` 'd the neck and provided With arms which are concaved upon their lnner faces and designed to coperate with the curved portions of sald arms upon the shell to cause the valvel to be" opening, said shell having legs projectingV from its upper surface and spaced apart, said legs provided with inclined sides and their upper portions concaved, the upper end 4of each leg being notched, a conicahshaped ball retaining member provided with downwardly `extending arms spaced apart and each terminating in a contracted portion adapted to rest in said notches, a hollow valve with a semiespherical end designed toV seat upon the marginal edge of the opening in said shell, and a weighted member conw fined between the valve and said conicalshaped member and normally holding the valve seated.
