IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS AND SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,070, dated November 21, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILEY WATSON, of Visalia, county of Tulare, State of California, have invented an Improved School-Desk and Seat and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improved schooldesk and seat combined in a simple portable article of furniture, in which both the seat and desk are adjustable, with relation to each other, so as to accommodate scholars of different sizes.

In order to describe my invention so that others may be able to understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which A represents a board about two feet and a half long, and upon which I mount and secure both seat and desk, so that they can be moved about as one article of furniture. Under each corner of this board I place a casterwheel, b, so that the desk and seat can be read ily moved when desired. To one end of the boards A, at the corners, I secure the posts 0, which are supported by the braces d. On the inside of each of these posts is a channel, j, and rack E. The desk F is constructed after the ordinary style, and is provided with two legs, G G, only, which extend downward from the back of the desk. These legs are placed at the proper distance apart to slide down inside the posts G, being provided with a tongue which bites in the groove j, and are supported by a cross'brace, h, at the lower end. A pawl, 13, is arranged to work through a mortise in the legs G and engage with the rack E on the standards, while the opposite end is suitably constructed to be depressed by the thumb and disengage the pawl when desired. By this arrangement I am able to raise the desk to any desired height by disengaging the pawl from the rack and lifting the desk to the desired position, where it will be held by the pawl in. a firm and substantial manner. The desk is provided with stationary inkstands and pen-racks, as shown. A slot, M, is made through the board or platform Ain front of each end of the desk where it is desired that the chair or seat shall be placed. This slot is made at right angles to the seat, so that the seat, which is secured in the slot, can be moved to or from the desk, as desired. N is a block orbox, through which a square longitudinal hole is made. A square block, O through which a round hole, extends, fits loosely in the hole through the block N, and has upon two of its sides a rack, X. The sides of the block N next to these racks are slotted, and pawls q are arranged to operate in the slots and engage with the rack on the interior sliding block, so that it can be raised to any desired height and be sustained by the pawls. The chair or seat R has a single leg or standard, S, extending downward from the center of the bottom or seat T, which passes down through the block 0 and is confined by a pin, W, beneath, so that the seat can be revolved around, if desired. A metallic strip, X, has its opposite ends secured to the sides of the block at the lower end, so that its center part can be bent or looped downward so as to pass through the slot M in the platform A, where it can be secured at any point along the slot by a pin, W, which is wedged between the loop and inider side of the platform. By this arrangement the seat can be adjusted in height or to and from the desk, as required by the pupil.

' The entire arrangement forms a neat, simple, and convenient article of furniture, that can be moved about at will, and always forms a complete desk and seat, suitable not only for schools,

but also adapted to private residences, offices,

and for general business purposes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The platform A, in combination with the adjustable desk F and adjustable seat It, sub stantially as and for the purpose above described.

2. The desk F, having thelegs G G, provided with the tongue K and pawl t, in combination with the grooved posts or standards 0 with their racks E, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
