, ject of the invention is to provide a device of this nature that is both extensible, and foldable, and thus by reason ofl its extensibility it is especially adapted for household uses as a dining table, etc., and being foldable only a minimum space will be utilized when it is not in use.

Another object is to provide a table of the above nature wherein the top structure is foldable about a central longitudinal axis whereby when the same is in a folded position it will assume a neat and compact form,

hence not only proving advantageous for minimizing the space utilized, but greatly facilitating handling thereof during the course of shipping.

A further object resides in the provision of a device of the foregoing character wherein the parts are cooperatively so arranged to permit free and easy movement whereby the table may be extended and additional leaves inserted, and folded with but little exertion. on the part of the operator.

A still further object is to provide a device of the type which is highly practical and efficient and which consists of but a few simple parts whereby it is believed that the same may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.

In the 'accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views; Figure 1 isa central longitudinal sectional view of my improved table showing the same in a folded posi- Y tion. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of my invention showing the same in an open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a wimilar view taken on line l--e of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a bracket that is employed. Fig. 6 is a detail view. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one improved bracket that is employed.

ln the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the base member of the device which carries a plurality of vertically arranged sleeves 11 adjacent its respective ends and {ixedly supports a suitably formed brace member l2 through the medium of yokes 13. The base member is supported by a plurality of legs 14 which are provided with yokes 1.5 that in' turn carry fastening members 16; the fastening members passing through Re sleeves 11 of the base member and thus holding-the legs 14 in pivotal relation therewith. The said supportinglegs may be provided with casters 17 when reducing my invention to practice, however this is an entirely arbitrary feature and it is to be understood that other means may be substituted if it is desired.

A comparatively long tubular shaft 18 is supported by a brace member 12 and may have connection therewith through the medium of the fastening members 19 and, in turn slidably carries a pair of stub shafts 20 and 21 respectively which project from the respective ends thereof as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A plurality of half- leaves 22 and 23 are now provided, to the inner ond of which is attached a bracket similar that illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. This particular bracket which has' been 'llustrated, consists of a base plate 24C which is fixed to the under side of the half-leaf, and carries an eyelet 25 for embracing either the shaft 18 or the stub shafts 20 or 21. Vpon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that the brackets on certain of the half-leaves embrace the shaft 18 while others engage the stub shafts 20 and 21 respectively, thus when the said half-leaves are arranged in a horizontal position a comparatively neat table-top will be provided.

lt will also be understood that each of the half-leaves is held in pivotal relation with respect to the shaft 18 and the respective stub shafts 20 and 21 thus allowing the same to be moved into the position illustrated in Figs. l and. 3.

To the under face of each of the halfleaves is secured a bracket 26 which are ariso ranged in alinement as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so as to receive the hollow shafts 27,Y the said hollow shafts Vtendingto retain 'the half-leaves so that they may be more readily operated uniformlyl The opposite hollow shafts 27 receive a supplemental shaft 28 whereby they may be moved relative to each other in consistence with the lengthening of the table top without destroying the unity of the respective half-leaves.

rIhe bracket shown in Fig. 6 consists of a pair kof removable sections 29 'and 30 the same being bent as at 21 to embrace the horizontal portion of the supporting legs 14, and again bent as at 32 to embrace the inner ends of' the arms 33. The brackets are arranged on the horizontal portions of the supporting legs adjacent their connection with the jaws 15 and by reason of their novel construction, are Vfree to move on the said horizontal portion of the supporting legs in the manner desired and as hereinafter set forth. The arms 33 which have pivotal connection with the said brackets through the medium of the fastening members 34 are slightly curved adjacent their outer ends as at 35 and carry inwardly projecting lugs 36. Now, when the half-leaves are in a horizontal position as shown in` Fig. '2 the said lugs 36 onlthe arms 33 may be received in the outer 4endsof thefrespeetive shafts 27 so as to support the outer ends of the halfleaves in an obvious manner; Of course, it

l is to be understood that means in the form of stop members 37 may be carried by the said arms 33in order that thespreading of the supporting legs will cause similar movement thereof and thus facilitate the operation of the device.

In the operation of my improved table it ywill be lassumed that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, as in ordinary use. Now, in order to fold the table, the curved portions 35 of the arms 33 are operated so as v to withdraw the lugs 36 from the outer ends of the shafts 27, after which the'supporting legs 14 are moved toward each other thus withdrawing support from the outer ends of the half-leaves and allowing the latter to move slowly into the position shown in Figs.

A table of the class described including a base member, a plurality of supporting legs movably lattached thereto, ay hollow shaft supported above said base member and extending longitudinally with respect thereto, stub shafts carried by said shaft and projecting from each end thereof, a plurality of oppositely arranged half-leaves, brackets carried bysaid half-leaves, certain of said f brackets embracing said shaft, other of said brackets embracing said lstub shafts, whereby said half-leaves may be moved relative to each other when assuming substantially vertical position, other brackets carried by said half-leaves adjacent their outer ends, hollow shafts supported by said last mentioned brackets, auXiliary shafts carried by said last mentioned hollow shafts, arms adjustably supported on said supporting legs, and lugs carried by said arms for reception in the outer ends of said last mentioned hollow shafts whereby said halfleaves may be supported in a substantially horizontal position, as and for the purpose specified.
