Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, J osnrn Marrnnws, EDWARD W. FREEMAN, and WILLIAM H. S.
BATEMAN, citizens of the United States, re-' siding at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to window sashes and the like, andhas for an object to provide a device for operating and securing a window sash relatively to the frame thereof.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a suitable device which can be used with one or a plurality of sashes for the purpose of operating the same to open or close the sashes or secure the same in a desired position relatively to the frame.
The invention still further comprehends the provision of a device which is so arranged and constructed with respect to the sash that it will readily and positively operate the same, whereby the operation of the sash will require very little power or energy and will, furthermore, not subject the sash to any undue strains or stresses.
Still further embodiments of the invention reside in a device which can be operated to simultaneously adjust a large number of sashes and which, therefore, is somewhat in the nature of what is generally known in the art as a continuous sash operating device.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of fliis specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the sash partially open and secured; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view looking down on the operating mechanism, with the dotted lines indicating different positions thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, the sash being in open position; Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the sash in closed position; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hinge member Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of our device, showing a duplex arrangement; Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the structure shown in Fig. 6, the

Referring more particularly to the views, we employ a frame 10 on which is arrange to swing vertically a sash 11, with the sash, when in closed position, adapted to lie in the vertical plane of the frame and when in open position inclined relatively to the frame, as will be seen by referring to the views. A bracket 12 projects rearwardly from the inner face of the frame 10 and terminates at its free end in opposed cars 13, through which passes a pin 14. Mounted to swing on this pin and lying between the ears 13 is a hinge member 15 and which is in the nature of a knuckle, said hinge member being adapted to swing vertically and having formed therewith a plurality of spaced laterally extending cars 16, through which pass a vertical pin 17, also passing through the mner end of an arm 18 lying between the' ears 16, said arm being adapted to swing horizontally with respect to the hinge member 15.
The free a circular plate rality of openings on the circular plate end of thearm 18 terminates in 19, provided with a plu- 20, and mounted to swing 19 by means of a suitable pin 21 is a lever 22 having its point of connection with the circular plate 19 at substantially the medial portion of the lever, the inner end of the lever being pivoted to swing horizontally on a bracket 23 projecting from the inner face of the sash 11 at substantially its medial portion. Now it will be clearly seen that by operating the free or handle end 24 of the lever 22, the sash 11 will be swung relatively to the frame so that when the lever is at any point between its limits of movement, the sash will be inclined relatively to the frame, whereas when the lever is at either extreme the sash will be closed relatively to the frame. In view of the ingenious connection of the lever with the arm and the connection of the arm with the bracket 12, it will be seen that the lever 22 swings in a horizontal plane,
and that the outer or handle end of the pass through the opening 25 and one of the,
openings 20 in the circular plate 19, thus locking the lever with respect to the cir cular plate and thereby securing the sash in an adjusted position relatively to the frame.
In Figs; 6 to 10 we disclose a modified form of our device and in which instance we aim to provide a somewhat similar structure, but wherein the device is compounded, and to this end we secure a block 27 to one of the uprights 28 of the frame, said block having a horizontal extension .29 formed therewith and projecting beyond the block. The hinge member 15' is pivoted on. one of the projecting ends of the extension 29 and the arm 18 pivoted on the hinge member 15 has pivotal connection with the lever 22 in the same manner as in the preferred form of the device, the inner end of the lever being pivoted to the sash on a side 30 thereof instead of at the lower medial portion of the sash, as disclosed in the preferred form of the device. In looking the lever and arm relatively to each other and securing the sash in an adjusted position, it will be noted that for each sash 11 we employ a plurality of the mechanisms which include the lever, an arm and hinge memher, one of said mechanisms being arranged at each side of the sash.
In the preferred form of our device the handle end 24 of the lever is straight, whereas in the modified formit will be noted that the handle end, indicated by the numeral 31, at one side of the sash, isbent upwardly, whereas the handle end of the lever on the other side of the sash, said handle end being indicated by the numeral 32, is bent downwardly, said handle ends of the said levers being thus offset from the bodies of the levers as shown.
An operating mechanism 33 is employed in the modified form for simultaneously operating two levers of a single sash, and to this end a sheave 34 is mounted on a suitable bracket or. support 35, at one end of the frame, While a sprocket wheel 36 is journaled on a bracket or support 37 secured to the other end of the frame, said sprocket having a toothed wheel 38 meshing with a worm 39, journaled on the bracket or support 37 and which worm has an extension thereof forming a shaft 40 on which is keyed a wheel 41, preferably grooved to receive a hand cable 42, whereby rotation will be imparted to the wheel 41. Horizontal upper and lower rods 43 respectively connect with the upwardly and downwardly ofiset handle ends of the levers of eachsash and the outer ends of the rods arerconnected by a cable 44 passing around the sheave 34, the inner ends of the rod being connected by a sprocket chain 56'wl1ich passes over the sprocket 36. The connection between the rods 43 and the levers at their offset ends is preferably instituted in each instance by a suitable clamp 46 which has pivotal connection with the offset end of each lever and is rigidly carried on the rod, although it will be understood that any other desirable form of connection or cable can be employed for this purpose. Now it will be readily seen that when the wheel 41 is rotated through the medium of the hand operating cable 43 Or any other convenient means which may be desired to be employed, the rods 43, through the medium of the cables connecting with the rods and the drum revoluble with the operating wheel 41, will be moved in opposite directions, thus through the medium of the levers causing the sash to swing relatively to the frame. By having one of the levers on each side of the sash it will be apparent that the sash, especially when it is of a large size, can be easily operated without being subjected to any undue stresses or strains and will be held in an adjusted position when rotation of the wheel 41 is discontinued, the frictional contact of the cable 45 with the drum 36 being sufficient to hold the sash in the desired open position, although it will, be understood that the sash can be locked relatively to the frame by using a plurality of the pegs such as are shown in the preferred form and indicatedcbythe numeral 26.
From the foregoing description it will be seen, and particularly in connection with the modified form of our device, that a large number of the sashes adjacently arranged can have their respective levers connected to be arranged in common with the cables and rods connected, by the cables so that by the operation of a single operating wheel at one end of the operating mechanism a large number of sashes will be simultaneously swung into. open or'closed positions or secured in any desired adjusted positions rel-' atively to their respective frames.
In Figs.'1l, 12 and 13 we disclose a locking means for the sash operating device and,
particularly when referring to Fig. 11, it will be seen that the arm 18 and lever 22 are substantially the same and mounted upon a bracket 12 as shown in the preferred form of the construction except that the arm 18 at its free end does not terminate in the circular plate shown in the preferred form but simply has a direct pivotal connection with the lever 22. Projecting from the hinge member 15 is a rod 57 on which is arranged to slide a collar 58, a thumb screw 59, constituting a locking member, passing loosely through the lever 22 and in threaded engagement with the collar 58, the inner end of the thumb screw being adapted to engage the rod 57. Thus it will be seen that when the thumb screw 59 is loosened relatively to the rod 57 the lever 22 can be actuated to adjust the sash 11 with respect to the frame 10 and then by tightening up the thumb screw so that its inner end will bear against the rod 57 the sash, also locking relatively to the frame and the lever 22, will be locked against movement as will also the arm 18.
In Fig. l& we employ a locking device to take the place of the thumb screw 59 and in this instance there is provided a collar 60 which is somewhat similar to the collar 58 but preferably hollow, said rod 57 being arranged to have the collar 60 slidable thereon, with a plurality of opposed leaf springs 61 secured within the collar 60 and bearing against a locking element 62, held in frictional contact with the rod 57 by the spring 61, will lock the operating lever 22 against movement, said operating lever 22 being swiveled to the collar at the point 63, with a suitable headed stem or actuating member 64: connecting with the plate or locking element 62 and projecting exterior-1y of the collar whereby pressure on the actuating element 6% will push the plate 62 downwardly against the action of the spring 61, thus disengaging the plate 62 from the rod 57 so that the lever 22 can be readily operated to swing the sash with respect to the frame, said plate 62 being normally in contact with the plate 57 when there is no downward pressure exerted upon the element 641.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In an operating device for a sash mounted on its frame, a bracket terminating at its free end in opposed ears, a pin passing through said ears, a knuckle pivotally mounted on the pin and between said ears for vertical swinging movement and provided with spaced laterally extending ears, an arm connected between the laterally extending ears of the knuckle to swing in an arcuate path at right angles to the path of movement of the knuckle, and a lever connected with the sash and the arm to swing in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the knuckle.
2. In an operating device for a sash mounted on its frame, a bracket terminating at its free end in opposed ears, a pin passing through said ears, a knuckle pivotally mounted on the pin and between said ears for vertical swinging movement and provided with spaced laterally extending ears, an arm connected between the laterally extending ears of the knuckle to swing in an arcuate path at right angles to the path of movement of the knuckle, a lever mounted with the sash and the arm to swing in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the knuckle, and locln'ng means for said lever.
3. In an operating device for sashes mounted on their frame, brackets on said frame and each provided with horizontal extensions, a knuckle member pivoted on one of the projecting ends of said extensions for vertical swinging movement, an arm connected with the knuckle to swing in an arcuate path at right angles to the path of movement of the knuckle, a lever connected with the sash on a side thereof and with each knuckle.
4. In an operating device for sashes mounted on their frame, brackets on said frame and each provided with horizontal extensions, a knuckle member pivoted on one of the projecting ends of said extensions for vertical swinging movement, an arm connected with the knuckle to swing in an arcu ate path at right angles to the path of movement of the knuckle, a lever connected with the sash on a side thereof and with each lmuckle, spaced upper and lower rods for imparting movement to said levers, the ends of said levers being offset and having connection with the respective rods.
