To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD E. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Securing Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to'doors, and principally to means for fastening doors for vulcanizers so that the same will be steam tight, but will be easily opened.
The features of my invention are hereinafter described and pointed out, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of the door embodying my invention, with a portion of the same broken away showing the locking mechanism. Fig. 2, is a vertical central section of the same on the line ww in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a front view of a door illustrating an alternative construction of mechanism embodying my invention. In these drawings A, indicates the shell of the cylindrical vulcanizer.
In Figs. 2 and 5, B, indicates a ring secured upon the front end of the shell A, said ring being provided with an internal flange b, which flange has an inclined rear surface Z), and is also provided with an annular groove 6 in the face thereof. For closing the vulcanizer I provide a door C, which door is provided with an inturned annular flange 0, having an inclined rear face 0; the flange 0, having an annular rib 0 in the face thereof, and adapted to enter and fit into the groove 6 in the face of the flange b, on the ring B. For securing and locking the door (I, in place on the ring B, I provide segments D, which have channels 03 in their peripheries, the side walls of which channels being inclined to receive the flanges b and 0. One end of each segment D, is pivoted upon to the free ends of the segments D, by means of pivots f. The links F, are preferably constructed of two pieces and provided with turn-buckles or sleeves G, by means of which the length of said links may be adjusted. On
the outer end of the shaft E, I provide a hand wheel H, or other means for rotating said shaft. Upon the ring B, I make ears J, upon which ears J, I pivot the arms J by means of a pivot rod j, said arms J, being secured against rotating on the pivot rod j, by means of pins 3' passing through the arms J, and rod 7', so that said arms J,
are compelled to move in unison. The arms J, extend over the upper and lower edges of the door 0. In the free ends of the arms J, I provide pivot screws J which extend into depressions j, in the upper and lower edges of the door C, so that the door C, may be swung away from the ring B, upon the arms J, as shown in Fig. 5, when it is desired to open the vulcanizer.
' In operation, when the vulcanizer door shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, is opened, the segments D, will be in the position thereof shown by broken lines in Fig. 1. When it is desired to close the door, the operator will push the door into place, and by turning the hand wheel H, to the right, will cause the disk E torotate until the links IE, will be in radial positions from the center of said disk, as shown in full and broken lines in Fig. 1, which will cause the segments to moveoutward so that the inclined walls of the channels 0?, in said segments, will engage theinclined surfaces 6 and d, on the inturned flanges b and c, on the ring B and door C, the engagement of said inclined surfaces during the outward movements of said segments firmly drawing the door C, against the ring B, and thereby securing said door in place. The screws J in the outer ends of the arms J are adapted to give vertical adjustment to the door C, so that the rib 0 on the face of the flange a, thereon, will freely enter the groove Z2 on the ring B.

'and 6, the locking mechanism is similar in operation to that hereinbefore described, and is placed on the outside of the door. In this construction (see Fig. 4) the ring B,
.whichis secured upon th shell A, is provided with an interior annular channel K;

For closing the vulcanizer, as shown in Figs. 3, 4e and 6, I provide a door L, having an annular rib Z, adjacent to its periphery adapted to flt into the groove is, the door L, being of'such diameter as to pass within the outer walll of the channel K. Pivoted on the outside of the door L, by means of pivots Z, are segments M, the inner faces of which slidably contact with theouter face of the door L, e the outer surface of the segment M, being inclined and adapted to engage the inclined inner face of the outer wall of the channel K.- For operating the segments M, I provide-a stud-post L, upon which is pivoted a upon the ring B, and on the outer end of the stud post L, I non-rotatably secure a bifurcated arm Q, by means of the pin 9, passing through said arm and said stud-post L.

and. a .shortsection of screw-threads r, .adapted to engage a screwfthreaded opening in the upper bifurcated end 9, of the bifurcated arm Q. The lower end of the rod R,
passes through the lower bifurcated end 9 of the arm Q, and said rod is secured against rotation in said ends 9, and of the arm Q, by means of a set-screw 7.
.- In operation, to adjust the door vertically so that the rib Z, thereon will enter the groove is, in the ring B, the set screw 7, may. .berloosened and the rod R, maybe -turned by means of a wrench engaging the head 1", thereof, so that the screw threads r, on the rod R, will raise or lower the arm Q, and the door secured thereon, as may be de sired. When the proper adjustment has been secured, the set screw 7, is again turned up tightly against the pivot rod B.

The combination in a device of the class described, of a door, a locking bar having one end thereof permanently supported and secured onone side surface of said door by means of a pivot-pin secured on the body portion of said door adjacent to the edge thereof; a door frame to receive said door, means on said door frame adapted to be engaged by said locking-bar, and mechanism adapted to swing the free end of said locking-bar laterally toward and into engagement with said door frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a device of the class described of a door, a locking bar having oneend thereof supported in a permanent position upon a pivot-pin on a side surface of the body of said door, a door frame to receive said door, a flange on said frame adapted to be engaged by said locking-bar, and disk and link mechanism to swing the free end of said locking-bar into and out of engagement with said flange, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a device of the class described, of a circular door frame, an inturned flange thereon having an inner iiiclined side surface, a door to close said frame, an inturned flange thereon having an inner inclined side surface thereon, swin ing segments pivoted on said door having e umnels in their peripheries adapted to embrace said internal flanges, and thereby secure the faces thereof together, and mechanism adapted to move the free ends of said segments outward and inward, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination in a device of the character described of a circular door frame,
an inturned flange thereon having a continuous radial wedge surface thereon, a circular door to close said frame, segmental members pivoted on said door at one end of said seg- -ments, and having radial wedge surfaces thereon adapted to engage the radial wedge surface on said flange, and mechanism ongaging the free ends of said segmental members adapted to swing the same outward whereby the ends of said segments adjacent to said pivots engage said flange in advance of the free ends thereof, substantially as described.
5. The combination in a device of the character described, of a door frame, an inturned flange thereon, a door to close said frame, a plurality of flange-engaging bars, one end of each of which is pivoted upon the body of said door, adjacent to the perimeter thereof, a rocking disk pivoted upon the body of said door, link bars eccentrically pivoted upon said disk, the opposite ends of said link bars being pivoted to the free ends of said flange-engaging bars, and means to rotate said disk whereby said flange-engaging bars may be swung sidewise upon their supporting pivots into engagement with said flange, substantially as described.
6. The combination in a device of the character described of a door, a locking-bar having an oflset lug extending slightly beyond the end of said bar and having a pivotopening therein, a pivot-pin passingthrough said opening and secured in the body-portion of said door adjacent to one edge thereof, a door frame to receive said door, means 011 said door frame to be engaged by said locking bar, and mechanism adapted to swing the free end of said locking-bar laterally into engagement with said door-frame, substantially as set forth.
