Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 245, 15916..
Application filed March 14, .1916. Serial No. 84,074.
To ellcuhom it may concern Be it known that I, JOi-INWV. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at vSeneca Falls, in thecounty of Seneca, State of NewYork, hare invented anewand use- ;tul Heater; and I'dohereby declare the following to bea full, clear, andexact description 103? thesinvention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to .malreland use the same. This invention relates to an improved water heater, and. an object'of the invention is to providean apparatus of this kind, in which essential, improvediand practical features of constructional-e involved.
One of the features ,of construction is the provision of a water, chamber "surrounding the tire pot,-,and ,having vertical water'tubes connected to a vertical auxiliary tubular water chamber. This auxiliary water chamher communicates with the steam chamber or dome, from which the steam vor heat is conveyed through the system (not shown),.and returned tov the water chamber .aroundthe firebox. The auxiliary chamber is provided with a plurality of radial tubes, through which the water circulates.
Another object .of the invention is the provision of vertically and radially disposed water tubes connected to 'the water chamber surrounding the fire pot and in turn having connections with a steam dome at the top of the heater, said connections andsaid tubes are substantially in the path of the heat from the fire box.
In practical fields the details of construe tion may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved heater constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through the heater, showing the relation of the water tubes with regard to the water chamber and the steam dome. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 77 of Fig. 2.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the base part of the casing of the heater provided with an ash pit 2. The
upper part of the base 1 has an int-urned annular flange 3 having a recess 1-, for the receptionof the annular flanges of the grate plate 6. I
The casing of the heater comprises the sections .7, 8. and 9. The section Sat its lower part hasanextension flange 10, which overlaps the upper part of the section 7, thereby aiiording a joint between'the two sections 'Tand 8. Arranged ontheinterior-of the sections 7 and 8 is an inner. lining 11, which may be constructed of any suitable material, and owing to thelining 11 overlying the joint,.wlaich includes the flange 10, the ioint is strengthened or reinforced. The section 9 has a downwardly extending annular flange 12, which fits on the interior of the lining 11, thereby making-a joint between. the sections 8 and 9.01? .thezca'sing.
The section 9 isv provided with .a products ofcoinbustion chamber 13, the wall let of which is arranged spaced apart from the wall .ofthe section 9, thereby providing :a steam dome or chamber 15. the chamber13 is srqrported in such spaced relation by means I of the connections 16 through which the passages 17 extend, said passages forming communication between theinterior of the sections 7 and 8 and the chamber-13. a
Resting uponand rising upwardly from thebase part 1 is a 'conicalcasing'18, the wall19 of-which isqhollow, thereby providing a water chamber 20. The interior of the casing. 18 constitutes the firepot 21. Rising upwardly from that portion of the casing 18 that connects the upper part of the walls 19 is a plurality of water tubes 22, and extending inwardly from theupper part of the inner wall of the casing 18 is a plurality ofadditional water tubes 23, which connect to the casing 24 having an auxiliary water chamber 25. Rising upwardly and forming an integral part of the casing 24 is a tubular water chamber 26, to which the horizontally and radially disposed parts 27 of the tubes 22 are connected, for communication with the interior of the chamber 26. The upper end of the tubular water chamber 26 is threaded into an opening 28 of the bottom of the section 9 of the casing of the heater, in order to. communicate with the steam dome or chamber 15. Extending radially from the tubular water chamber 26 and in communication with said tubular chamber, is a plurality of water tubes 29.
The wall of It is to be noted that the tubes 22, 23 and 29 are disposed directly in the path of the heat and products of combustion that rise from the fire pot, so that the water in said tube will be maintained well heated, so that the heat and steam therefrom will be intensified as it passes ofi through the exit pipes 30, 31 and 32. The pipes 30 and 31 extend laterall 1 from the upper part of the heater, whereas the pipe 32 extends vertically from the top part of the heater. The heat or steam after passing through the system (not shown), is returned in a condensed condition through the pipes 33 to the water chamber 20. The upper part of the heater is provided with the usual weight controlled safety valve 3%. A pipe 35 is connected to and rises from the pipe 33 upon the left of the heater having communication with the chamber 15 by virtue of the connecting pipe 36. The upper end of the pipe 35 is provided with the usual pressure gage 37, and below the connecting pipe 36 and carried by the pipe 35 is the usual form of water gage 38.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In a heater as set forth, a casing, a second casing on the interior of the first casing adjacent its lower part and rising upwar ly and having a fire pot in the interior thereof, the second casing consisting of an inner and outer wall having therebetween a water chamber which surrounds the fire box, the upper part of the first casing hav ing a steam dome casing provided on the interior thereof with a products of combustion chamber, an auxiliary tubular water chamber extending downwardly and centrally from the steam dome casing and in communication with the dome and provided with a multiplicity of radial water tubes, a
Copies of this patent may be obtained for plurality of water tubes connecting the main water chamber and the auxiliary tubular water chamber, said'products of combustion chamber having communications with the upper interior of the first casing, into which the products of combustion from the fire pot pass and thence in the products of combustion chamber, said water tubes being in the direct path of the products of combustion, so that the water in said tube will be auxiliary heated to being heated in the main water chamber, and an outlet for the products of combustion chamber.
2. In a heater of the kind set forth, the combination of a base having an ash pit and a grate and a cylindrical casing provided with a steam dome at its top rising upwardly from the base, of a conical fire pot casing rising upwardly from the base adjacent the grate, the wall of the fire pot casing having a water chamber, an auxiliary tubular water chamber disposed vertically and concentric with the fire pot casing and having its upper end connected to the steam dome, the lower end of the auxiliary water chamber having a lurality of radial water tubes provided with vertical water tube connections with the first water chamber, said auxiliary water chamber between the steam dome and said radial tubes having a plurality of radial water tubes, through which the water circulates, means for carrying off the steam from the dome, and means for carrying the condensed steam back to the first water chamber.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
