To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam boilers adapted to generate steam for fire en 'incs or other purposes, and the objects of my improvement are to secure the utmost amount of generating capacity within a for increased generating capacity; to provide an. annular water and steam chamber which is approximately of the same width as the diameter of the generating tubes; to connect each unit of circulation independently with the water and steam chambers; to provide the top headers with discharge pipes to the steam chamber through the outer wall of the shell; to provide the steam chamber with a supplemental apartment; to position the steam discharge pipe at a point farthest removed from the overflow generating units; to protect the top of the shell and the discharge connections with a hot air jacket; and to provide a simple and durable construction with parts easily accessible for removal or replacing. These objects are attained in the following described manner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line a-a of Figs. 2 and 3 of portions of a steam boiler embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 a plan of the top connections with the shell; Fig. 3 an inverted section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and Fig. l "a front elevation with parts broken away.
In the drawings the straight cylinders 1 and 2 form the concentric walls of the shell which is provided on opposite sides with the furnace door 3 and the steam discharge pipe 4. The narrow annular steam and water space between the walls is approximately of the same width as the diameter of one of the water tubes 5. A horizontal partition 6 separates the steam space into a main chamber 7 and a supplemental chamber 8 thereover. A assage 9 extends from the main chamber to the discharge pipe near the 1 top ring 11, and a similar passage 12 extending between the main and the supplemental steam chambers terminatcs a short l distance above the variable water line 13 l and directly over the door 3, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
A header bar 14 is suspended within the top of the shell in yokes 15 and a series of parallel top headers 16 are secured at one end to its opposite sides by means of bolts 17. 'Bottom headers 18 similar to and in registration with the respective top headers are connected thereto by a multiplicity of the straight vertical water tubes 5. Each bottom header is independently connected to the inner wall of the water leg by means of a supply pipe 21. and each top header is provided with a discharge pipe 22 which extends over the top of the shell and by a re turn bend therein communicates through the outer wall of the shell with the supplemental steam chamber.
Corresponding top and bottom headers together with their connecting water tubes discharge and supply pipes form separate and distinct units of circulation between the water and steam spaces of the shell. llach of said units may be independently removed or replaced without disturbing the others and accessibility of the connection of the discharge pipcs 22 with the outer wall of the shell facilitates their removal.v
An annular flange 23 encircles the shell below the connection of the discharge pipes 22 therewith and the hood 2st which converges to the chimney (not shown) is formed with straight cylindrical walls 25 whereby it is removably supported on said flange. Said wall encircles the upper portion of the shell and forms a hot air chamber or jacket 26 which incloses the terminals of the discharge pipes 22 and maintains them at a high degree of temperature with the overflow heat from the inside of the shell. Said air chamber 26 serves also to mutile the exhaust of the engine through the chimney and to modify any sudden change in the temperature of the top of the shell which tends to loosen the rivets or other connections therewith.
In operation, by reason of the narrow water and steam space, more area is pro vided for the generating units for the same diameter of shell. The discharge from said units to the interior of the supplemental steam chamber is advantageously against the greater heat of the inner wall. The heat of the outer wall supplements that of the inner wall in maintaining the contents of the supplemental steam chamber at a high degree vertical shell consisting of concentric cylindrical walls inclosing an annular water and steam space of uniform thickness, and a multiplicity of vertical water tubes inclosed within the shell in parallel series and each having a diameter substantially equal to the thickness of said annular space.
2. In a steam boiler, a shell provided on one side near its top with a discharge pipe and on the opposite side with a furnace door, said shell consisting of concentric walls confining between them the water leg and steam chamber, a horizontal partition in the steam chamber, a passage extending from beneath said partition to the discharge pipe and a similar passage extending from above said partition toward the water leg and terminating a short distance therefrom.
3. In a steam boiler, an annular steam chamber, a similar annular supplemental steam chamber thereover, an open passage between them, and a steam discharge pipe communicating with the annular chamber.

In a steam boiler, a shell consisting of concentric walls inclosing between them a water leg and a steam chamber of uniform' thickness, a series of parallel generating units within the shell, a supply pipe connecting each of said units with the water leg, and a discharge pipe connecting each of said units with the steam chamber through the outer wall of the shell.
5. In a steam boiler, a shell consisting of concentric walls inclosing a steam chamber between them, a series of headers supported within the shell, and a discharge pipe connecting each of said headers with the steam chamber through the outer wall of the shell and in a direction perpendicular thereto.
6. In a steam boiler, a shell, a top header, a discharge pipe formed with a return bend and connecting at its ends with the header and with the outside of the shell in a plane with the header.
7. In a steam boiler, an upright shell, a flange secured to the outside a short distance below the top thereof and a hood supported on the flange with an air chamber between the hood and the portion of the shell above the flange.
8. A. steam boiler comprising concentric cylindrical. walls inclosing an annular steam chamber, a steam discharge pipe leading therefrom, a horizontal partition in said chamber and formed with a plural number of openings therethrough, one of said openings being arranged to communicate with the steam discharge pipe.
9. In a steam boiler the combination of a shell consisting of concentric cylindrical walls inclosing between them an annular water leg and steam chamber, a horizontal partition in said chamber, a passage extending through the partition to a steam discharge pipe thereover and a passage extending through the partition toward the water leg.
10. In a steam boiler, the combination of a shell consisting of concentric cylindrical walls inclosing between them an annular steam chamber, a horizontal partition in. said chamber and provided with an open passage therethrough, and a passage communicating between the space below the partition and the discharge pipe thereover.
11. In a steam boiler, the combination of a shell consisting of concentric walls inclosing an annular water and steam space of uniform thickness between them, a series of water tubes within the shell, and means communicating therefrom with the annular space through the outer wall and in a direction perpendicular thereto.
12. In a steam boiler, the combination of a shell consisting of concentric walls inclosing between them an annular water and steam space of uniform thickness, a jacket inclosing the upper portion of the shell with an air space which communicates with the interior thereof, a series of water tubes within the shell and means communicating therefrom through the air space and in a perpendicular direction through the outer wall with the annular space.
13. In a steam boiler, the combination of a shell consisting of concentric walls inclosing between them a steam chamber and a water leg of equal thickness therewith, a series of water tubes within the shell, discharge pipes leading therefrom and discharging in a perpendicular direction through the outer wall to the interior of the steam chamber, and a jacket inclosing the discharge pipes with an air chamber which communicates with the interior of the shell.
14. A steam boiler comprising a shell formed with concentric walls inclosing an annular steam chamber and a hood inclosing the upper portion thereof with an annular air space.
