Description

WILLIAM TEAMER.
Vimprovement in Stove Lids.
NO. 121,019. y 4 IafentedINGV.14,18%.l
FFICE.
WILLIAM TEAMER, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-LIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,019, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TEAivmn, of Evansville, Vanderburg county, Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Stove-Hole Covers, of which the following is a speciiication:
My invention consists of a stove-hole cover having a hole for the reception of the liftinghandle and a plate rendered self-closing to the hole, all substantially as described hereafter.
The object .of my invention is to provide the means of removing and replacing the cover without resorting to the socket, which is made in common covers for receiving the handle, and
which cannot be molded without much care and Without making occasional bad castings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a stove-hole cover with my improvement 5 Fig. 2, the same, showing the method of applying the instrument for lifting the cover; and Fig. 3, an inverted plan view of the cover.
A is a cast-iron cover adapted to the usual boiler-hole of a stove or range; and in this cover is a hole, x, for the reception of the end of an instrument, B, by Which the cover may be readily removed and replaced. The edge of the hole .t is beveled for the reception of the beveled edge of a plate, a, which is cast on and forms part of the arm d of the lever D, the latter being hung to a pin passing through lugs f f on the under side of the cover, and the other arm d of the lever being sufciently heavy to overbalance the arm d `and its plate a, and thereby induce the' latter to close the hole m when not disturbed by the instrument.
When the cover has to be removed from its place on the stove or range the curved end of this instrument is applied to and depresses the plate a, and takes its place beneath the cover, and the instrument may then be used as a handle for removing and replacing the cover, in a manner too well understood to need description.
Considerable trouble is experienced in molding the usual sockets of stove-hole covers for receiving the lifting-handles, and the formation of these sockets in the molds frequently results in bad castings. By my improvement all the advantages of the ordinary socket as regards the prevention of the escape of the products of cont bustion through the cover are maintained, for the plate a effectually closes the opening x. At the same time the difficulties attending the molding of the ordinary socket are avoided, for my improved cover can be molded irom a pattern without detachable pieces and without the employment of a core.
I claim as my invention- A stove-hole cover having a hole to which is adapted a plate rendered self-closing, substantially in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM TEAMER.
