Be it known that I, IRA M. THUnLow, a
' citizen ofthe United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ResaW-RolLSetting Mechanism, of which the" following is a specification.
The invention has for its primary object a peculiarly simple and efiicient mechanism for adjusting the feed rolls of a; re-saw machine, the same providing for exceeding nicety of adjustment of the rolls within a wide range both independently and also in unison to secure self centering. In the accompanying drawings and in the description based thereon is set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same being susceptible, however, of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms without departing from the-essence of the invention, or sacrificing its material In the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the feed roll mounting. and set Works; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig, 3 is anted geelevation of the set works showing the rack bars in cross sec tion; and Fig. 4: is a Qdeta il viewin' top plan showing a portion of. the operating mechanism" of the set works in a different position from that shown in Fig. 1.

The carriage 12 has secured thereto in fixedrelation a rack bar 15 and the'carriage 1a is similarly provided with a rack bar 16, these two rack bars being in superjacent planes and meshingrespectively with .pinions 17 and 18 coaxially mounted, the
former upon atubular shaft 19 andthelatter upon a solid shaft 20.
Fixed upon the shaft 19; of theflpinionl? is a hub-like-member 21" provided with radially arranged equally spaced notches 22. The hub member is shown as having the form of a notched disk butthe form of said member is immaterial and it may be a member provided with radial arms having terminal sockets; the sockets being the functional equivalents'of the notches. The shaft member be engaged within one of the notchesand the hub turned until said notch reaches the position formerly occupied by the next adjacent notch the feed roll will have been advanced orretracted, as the case may be, a distance corresponding to onequarter' its total permissible travel. For the purpose of causing such angular movement of the hub members and shaft independently and also in unison suitable mechanism is employed, preferably that now to bedescribed:
Fixedly mounted and having the shaft as a center isa sector 25 divided by a fin 26 into upper and lower portions provided With ratchet teeth 27 and 28. Pivotally mounted at 29 adjacent to the notched periphery of the hub member 21 is a lever 30 having a handle 31 and a sector-engaging latch 32 with a conveniently situated finger piece 83 connected with the plunger rod 34', the inner end of which is attached to a plunger catch 35 adapted to engage Within one of the notches 22 of the hub member" 21. A second lever36 is similarly pivoted at37 adjacentthe notched periphery ofthe hub member 23 and isprovided witha handle 38, asector-engaging latch 39, a conveniently arranged finger piece 40, a plunger rod 41, and a plunger catch 42 for engagement within one of the notches 24E of the hubmember 23.
The pivotal mounting 29 of the lever 30 is-ina projection formed upon a plate 43 which is rigidly fixed to the hub member 21 and the pivotal mounting 37 of the lever 36 is likewise" in the plate 44 which has a fixed relation to thehub member" 23. The hub" plates 43 and 44: extend beyond the peripheries of their hub members 21 and 23 and are respectively provided with areuate slots 45 and 46 concentric with the shaft 20' and in vertical register one with the other. Extending through the slots 45 and 46 is a clamping pin 47 provided with a wing nut by means of which the two hub plates 43 and 44 may be clamped together in fixed relation in any desired angular re lation about the shaft 20 as a center. i
It will be observed that the levers 30 and 36 do not have an inherent rigid relation to the hub plates 43 and 44, but are rigidly coupled therewith in a detachable manner by means of coupling rods. These two ,coupling rods are identical and the description of one will suflice for both. Having reference to Fig. 1, the coupling rod 48 is pivoted to the hub plate 44 at 49, the opposite end of the coupling rod being provided with a hook 50 arranged to take over an eccentric or cam shaped latch 51 provided with an operating; handle 52. The coupling rod 48 is encircled by a compression spring 53bearing at the outer end of the coupling rod upon the shouldered nut 54 and at its opposite end upon the stop 55 which is threaded upon said rod, and adapted to be seated within the hook formed by the nose 6 of the lever 36. So arranged the lever is held in fixed relation to the hub plate and is substantially integral therewith to all intents and purposes. However, by releasing the hook 50 of the connecting rod from the latch 51 by swinging the same by means of its handle 52 (see Fig. 4) the connection between the lever and its hub plate is rendered yielding under the influence of the compression spring 53 acted upon by the movable or slidable stop 55.
Then the various parts of the set works are arranged with both the levers occupying an extreme position at say the left hand of the sectors and with their plunger catches in engagement with the notches 22 and 24, the feed rolls will be equidistant from the saw line and in their position of greatest separation. If, now, the lever 36 be grasped andmoved tothe position shown in Fig. 1 at the right of the sector, the hub member 23 will be angularly turned and the feed rolls 13 will be advanced toward the saw line onefourth of their complete travel. If the plunger catch 42 be now released from the notches of the hub member 23 by means of the finger piece 40 and the latch 39 be released from the teeth 23 of the sector and the lever be moved to the left until its plunger catch 42 engages within the next stop 24, the carriage 14 and the feed roll 13 may be advanced another quarter in the same manner. Obviously the advance may be finally made less than a quarter by permitting the latch 39 to engage the sector at any point intermediate the two extreme positions of the lever. In the same manner the carriage 12 and the feed rolls 11 may be advanced and retracted by the actuation of the lever 30 and its engagement with the successive notches of its hub member 21.
The above description applies to gage sawing, the levers being substantially rigidly connected with the hub members by means of the coupling or connecting rod as shown in Fig. 1. If, however, it is desired to have the feed rolls move toward and from each other in unison for self-centering, the two levers are brought into the desired relative adjustment or position, the books 50' of the coupling rods are released by means of the cam latch 52 and the two hub plates are clamped together by means of the pin 47 and nut. The levers are now, in efiect, broken and the connection between the lever and its hubmember or plate is a rocking one about the points 29 or 37 and 55, and the rolls can yield in opposite directions against the force of the compression springs 53, such yielding being made uniform by the clamping together of the two hub plates.

In re-saw roll setting mechanism, the combination of a pair of feed rolls arranged on two sides of the saw line, a carriage for each roll movable along ways transversely of the saw line, co-axially arranged shafts, gearing connecting each of the shafts with one of the carriages, a hub member fixed on each shaft, a lever pivoted to each hub member, means to hold the free end of the lever in a selected position, and a yielding connection between the lever and hub at a point forming a triangle with the pivot and shaft.

In re-saw roll setting mechanism, the combination of a pair of feed rolls arranged on two sides of the saw line, a carriage for each roll movable along ways transversely of the saw line, co-axially arranged shafts, gearing connecting each of the shafts with one of the carriages, a hub member fixed on each shaft, a lever pivoted to each hub memher, means to hold the free end of the lever in a selected position, and a yielding connection between the lever and hub at a point other than the pivotal point.

In re-saw roll setting mechanism, the combination of a pair of feed rolls arranged on two sides of the saw line, a carriage for each roll movable along ways transversely of the saw line, co-axially arranged shafts, gearing connecting each of the shafts with one of the carriages, a hub member fixed on each shaft, a lever pivoted to each hub member, means to hold the free end of the lever in a selected position, and a yielding connection between the lever and hub at a point other than the pivotal point, and means to transform the yielding connection to a rigid one.
