Application filed February 3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. PELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill Set-forks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates more particularly to cable driven set works. Its main objects are to facilitate advancing the knees with a, log or piece of timber on the head blocks toward the plane of the saw predetermined intervals for cutting lumber of the desired dimensions; and generally to improve the construction and operation of mechanism of this class.
It consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view and horizontal section on the line 11, Fig. 2, of set works embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, omitting the head block; Fig. 3 is an enlarged end elevation and cross section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a front elevation as viewed from the right relative to Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5, Fig. 6, showinga portion of the index wheel and associated parts of the set works; Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 66, Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is an enlarged cross section on the line 77, Fig. 1, showing the rocker shaft and a part of the clutch operating connections; and Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view of one of the clutch shifting collars and its immediate connections.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the set shaft running lengthwise of 'the carriage and provided with bevel gears 2 and 3 and also with means for operating the knee or standard (not shown) of each.

block. Upon round rods 8 fixed in the frame of the machine transversely to the set shaft, are revolubly mounted tubular shafts 9 and 10. These shafts are provided with bevel pinions or gears 11 and 12, meshing respectively with the gears 2 and 3 on the set shaft. Upon the shafts 9 and 10 are loosely mounted the drive wheels or sheaves 13 and 14, around which the driving cable 15 passes to and from driving and guiding sheaves (not shown) located in the usual or any suitable manner adjacent to the ends of and below the carriage ways.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the axis of the sheave 13 is set at a slight angle or inclination to the axis of the sheave 1 1, with the upper sides of the sheaves in alinement and their lower sides out of alinement, so that the cable 15 will run on their upper sides from one to the other without chafing against the sides of their grooves and will pass on the under side clear of each to or from the other.
On the rear ends of the shafts 9 and 10 next to the sheaves 13 and 14, are fixed wheels 16 having internally beveled friction rims forming members of clutches for operat-ively connecting said shafts and sheaves. The sheaves are formed or provided with externally beveled rims l7 fitting into the rims of the wheels 16 and forming the other members of the clutches. The drive sheaves 13 and 14 are capable of a limited endwise movement as well as of rotary movement on the shafts 9 and 10 so as to admit of the engagement and disengagement of the opposing clutch members.
Internally grooved clutch shifting collars 18, made in halves as shown in Fig. 8, are fitted on the hubs of the sheaves 13 and 14 and movable clutch members 17 in engagement with peripheral tongues formed on said hubs, and are centrally connected on opposite sides above and below the shafts 9 and 10 by parallel links or bars 19.
A rocker shaft 20 arranged parallel with the set shaft and on the opposite side there of from the drive sheaves, is provided with eccentrics 21, which as shown in Fig. 7, are set at an angle of approximately 90 degrees from each other. On these eccentrics are fitted strap members 22, which are connected on opposite sides above and below the rocker shaft by rods 23 with the links or bars 19, adjacent to the clutch shifting collars 18. By this arrangement of the eccentrics and of their connections with the clutch collars, when the rocker shaft is turned in either direction from its middle or neutral position, in which it is shown in Fig. 7, one of the eccentrics will operate to shift the movable member 17 of one clutch into engagement with the opposing member 16, while the other eccentric will have but little effect on the movable member of the other clutch, which remains open or disengaged, and the pivot connections of the links or bars 19 with the collar 18 of the open clutch will serve as fulcrums for closing or en-' gaging the other clutch.
The shaft 20 is provided with a hand lever 24 for manually operating the clutches. This lever is provided, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, with a latch 25, arranged by engagement with a centrally notched sector 26, car ried by the frame as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to hold the rocker shaft in a middle or neutral position with both clutches open or out of engagement. The rocker shaft 20 is also provided with an arm 27, swiveled in transverse sleeve, which may be conveniently formed as shown, on the hub of the lever 24. This arm is yieldingly held from turning in said sleeve by a spring detent 28, which is formed with a depression or seat which normally engages with a cross pin 29 projecting from said arm.
The power transmitting gear wheel 2 is formed or provided with a notched rim 30, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and on the hub of said gear wheel is loosely mounted an index wheel 31, the graduated rim of which extends outwardly beyond the notched rim 30 of the gear 2. To the rim of the index wheel are pivoted, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, dogs 32, which are adapted to engage with the notches in the rim 30 and thus lock the index wheel to the gear 2. These dogs are normally held in engagement with said notched rim by springs 33, and they are so located on the index wheel that when one of them is in engagement with a notch in the rim 30, the other will rest on a projection midway between two adjacent notches, as shown in Fig. 3. By this arrangement of the dogs with relation to the notches in the rim 30 of the gear 2, a closer adjustment of the index wheel may be obtained without unduly reducing the size of the notches and of the noses of the dogs which engage therewith. For instance, if each notch represents 1/32 of an inch of the movement of the knees or standards, in setting, adjustments may be made with the index wheel to 1/64 of an inch, the distance between adjacent notchesin the rims 30 being in efl'ect divided by the arrangement of the dogs 32.
The index wheel is formed or provided on one side with a spiral groove or guideway 34, and outside of said groove or guideway with a circular groove or guideway 35, concentric with the'set shaft, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. On the hub of the index wheel is loosely mounted a hand wheel 36, having bosses or lugs 37 projecting from its hub between adjacent spokes of the index wheel, as shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 6, to limit the movement of the hand wheel relative to the index wheel.
The lugs or bosses 37 are connected by links 38 with lateral pins or projections on the dogs 32, the openings in the links engaging with said pins or projections being elongated as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to permit the hand wheel to resume its normal position with the links at an inclination to radii of the wheel when either of the dogs rests on a point or projection between notches of the rim 30, as shown on the under side of the set works in Fig. 3.
A link lever 39, pivoted at its lower end to the arm 27 of the rocker shaft 20, is provided with a pin or projection 40 for engagement with the spiral groove or guideway 34, or the circular groove or guideway 35 of the index wheel 31. The pin or projection 40 is so arranged that by engagement with the outer end of the spiral groove or guideway 34 it will turn the rocker shaft 20 with the hand lever 25 to its middle or neutral position, when the index wheel 31 is returned by the operation of the set worrs to its home position after having been turned backward by hand to determine the set or advance of the knees.
To enable the setter to quickly and accurately adjust the index wheel, an index or pointer 41, mounted on a bracket or arm extending upwardly from a bearing of the set shaft adjacent to the gear 2, as shown in Fig. 4, projects over the graduated rim of the index wheel, which is graduated and numbered from left to right, and beginning with zero at the point with which the index 41 coincides when the index wheel is in its home position, as shown in Fig. 3.
A spirally grooved cylindrical lumber scale 42, which may be mounted on the same bracket or arm which carries the index 41, is connected with the set shaft 1 by gears 43 and 44.
To instantly stop the set works when the set shaft is thrown out of gear with either drive sheave, a brake is provided which may be applied to the rim of either or each friction wheel 16. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, it consists of a strap 45, surrounding and adapted to work with the friction wheel 16 on shaft 9, and attached at its ends to arms 46 on a transverse rocker shaft 47. This shaft is supported at its front end in a bearing 48 on a distance piece or brace bar 49, connecting the rear ends of the rods 8. At its front end it is provided with a crank arm 50, which is connected by a curved or elbow-shaped link 51 with a crank arm 52 on the rocker shaft 20. The arms 50 and 52 and the connecting link 51 are so construct-- ed and arranged with relation to the arms 46 that the brake band will be tightened on the friction wheel 16 when the rocker shaft 20 is in its middle or neutral position, and will be slackened to release said friction wheel when said rocker shaft is turned in either direction from such position to engage either of. the clutches for advancing or receding the knees.
The set works operates as follows: Assuming that it is desired to cut a plank or piece of lumber two inches thick from a log, cant or timber which is placed on the carriage and secured to the knees, and that the driving sheaves 13 and 14 are being driven in the direction indicated by arrows on the drawing, the setter turns the hand wheel 36 from its home position in which it is shown in the drawing, back to the left as indicated by dotted arrows on Figs. 1, 3 and 6, till the point marked 2 on the graduated rim of the index wheel 31 coincides with the index or pointer 41. The initial movement of the hand wheel straightening the links 38, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 6, thrusts the dogs 32 out of engagement with the notched rim 31, and the lugs or bosses 37 on the hub of the hand wheel engaging with the next spokes of the index wheel behind them, turn said index wheel with the hand wheel. When the index wheel has been turned to the desired point as shown by the index or pointer 41, the setter gives the hand wheel 36 a slight turn forward or to the right, thus restoring the links 38 to their original positions relative to the index wheel and releasing the dogs 32, one of which will be forced by the associated spring 33 into and held in engagement with the opposite notch in the rim 30, thereby locking the index wheel to the gear 2. The setter now throws the lever 25 forward or to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby forcing the beveled rim or clutch member 17 on the sheave 13 into engagement with the opposing friction wheel 16 and locking said sheave on the shaft 9, which being then rotated, will through the pinion 11 and gear 2, turn the set shaft in the direction indicated by full line arrows on the drawing. As the index wheel 31, which is locked to and turned with the gear 2, is returned to its original home position, the outer end of the spiral groove or guideway 34 engaging with the pin 40 of link lever 39, turns the rocker shaft 20 with the hand lever 25, back to its middle or neutral position, where it is automatically locked by the latch 25 dropping into the notch in the sector 26. As the rocker shaft 20 is brought to this position, it withdraws the friction rim or clutch member 17 on sheave 13 from the 0p posing friction wheel 16, and the brake strap 45 is simultaneously tightened upon said wheel, thereby instantly arresting the movement of the shaft 9 and of the set shaft 1 with which it is geared. By repeat ing the foregoing operations the log, cant or timber may be cut into lumber of the desired dimension or dimensions, the total of which is indicated on the lumber scale 42. WVhen the log, cant or timber has been completely cut into lumber, the knees are run back on the head blocks to receive another log by throwing the hand lever 25 backward or to the left, as shown in Fig. 3. This operation engages the clutch members 16 and 17 associated with the drive sheave 14, thereby locking said sheave on the shaft 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The set shaft will thus be rapidly turned by the gears 12 and 3 backward, as indicated by dotted arrows, till it is stopped by the setter turning the lever 25 back to its middle or neutral position, whereupon the brake will be applied as before, instantly arresting the movement of the set works. If, as frequently occurs, the setter desires to arrest as well as start the advance of the knees by hand without the intervention of the automatic stop mechanism, as for example, in the adjustment of the knees to make the first cut from a log or piece of timber, the link lever 39 is turned away from the index wheel 31, springing the pin 29 out of its seat in the detent 28 and withdrawing the pin 40 from the spiral groove or guideway 34. It is then swung on its pivot-with the arm 27 to bring the pin 40 opposite the circular groove or guideway 35, with which it is engaged by turning said lever back toward the index wheel till the pin 29 drops back into its seat in the spring detent 28. \Vith the pin 40 in engagement with the circular groove or guideway 35, the advance of the knees in setting must be stopped, as well as start ed, manually, by means of the lever 25. WVhen it is desired to return to the ordinary operation of the set works, the pin 40 is shifted back into engagement with the spiral groove or guideway 34.
Various changes in details of construction and arrangementof parts may be made without departing from the principle and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, a drive wheel and a clutch for operatively connecting them, of an index wheel movable independently of the set shaft and provided with a spiral and with a circular guideway, means for locking said index wheel to turn with the set shaft, a hand lever for operating said clutch and a connection shiftable into engagement either with said spiral or with said circular guideway and adapted When working with said spiral to disengage the clutch upon the return of the index wheel to home position.
2. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, a drive wheel and a clutch for operatively connecting them, of an index wheel movable independently of the set shaft for determining the set and provided with a spiral and with a circular guideway, means for locking said index wheel to turn with the set shaft, a rocker shaft connected with said clutch and provided with a hand lever and an arm, a link pivoted to said arm and shiftable into engagement either with said spiral or with said circular guideway, and a spring arranged to hold said link in engagement either with said spiral or with said circular guideway.
3. I11 saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, a drive wheel and a clutch for operatively connecting them, of an index wheel movable independently of the set shaft for determining the set and having a spiral groove and a concentric circular groove on one side, means for locking the index wheel to turn with the set shaft, a rocker shaft connected with said clutch and provided with a hand lever and with a swiveled arm, a link lever pivoted to said arm and provided with a pin shiftable into engagement with either of said grooves, and a spring detent coacting with a projection of said arm to yieldingly hold said pin in engagement with either groove.
4. In a saw mill set works the combination with a power transmitting wheel having a notched rim, an independently movable concentric index wheel having a dog adapted to engage with the notches in said rim, a hand wheel capable of limited movement inclependently of the index wheel, and a link connecting said dog with the hand wheel and adapted upon the initial movement of the hand wheel in one direction to throw said dog out of engagement with the notched rim of the power wheel.
5. In saw mill set works the combination with a power transmitting wheel having a notched rim, an independently movable concentric index wheel having dogs spaced to engage one at a time with the notches in said rim and lock said wheels together, a hand wheel capable of limited movement independently of said index wheel, and links connecting said dogs with the hand wheel and adapted upon the initial backward movement of the hand wheel to throw said dogs out of engagement with said notched rim.
6. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, a drive wheel and a clutch for operatively connecting them, of a power 't'ansn'litting wheel having a notched rim, an independently movable concentric index wheel provided with a dog working with said notched rim and normally locking the index wheel thereto, a hand wheel capable of limited movement independent-1y of the index wheel, a link connecting said dog with said hand wheel and adapted upon the initial backward movement of the hand wheel to throw said dog out of engagement with said notched rim, and a clutch operating connection actuated by the return of the index wheel to home position to throw the clutch out of engagement.
7. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, a drive wheel and a clutch for operatively connecting them, of a power transmitting wheel having a notched rim, an index wheel concentric with and movable independently of said power transmitting wheel and provided with a spiral and with a dog normally engaging said notched rim and locking the index wheel thereto, a hand wheel for turning said index wheel backward and capable of limited movement independently thereof, a link connecting said dog with said hand wheel and arranged to throw the dog out of engagement with said notched rim upon the initial backward movement of the hand wheel, a. rocker shaft provided with a hand lever for manually operating said clutch, and a connection between said rocker shaft and spiral adapted to automatically disengage the clutch when the index wheel is returned forward to home position.
8. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, of shafts arranged transversely thereto and connected therewith, drive sheaves loosely mounted on said transverse shafts and connected to turn the set shaft in opposite directions, clutches for operatively connecting said sheaves with the transverse shafts, collars in which the hubs of the movable clutch members are fitted to turn, links centrally connecting said collars on opposite sides thereof, a rocker shaft parallel with the set shaft and provided. with eccentrics set at an angle to each other, and rods connecting the eccentrics with said links adjacent to said collars and adapted when the rocker shaft is turned in one direction from a neutral position to engage the members of one clutch and when said rocker shaft is turned in the opposite direction from said neutral position to engage the members of the other clutch.
9. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, of transverse shafts connected therewith, drive sheaves loosely mounted on the transverse shafts and connected to turn the set shaft in opposite directions, clutches for operatively connecting said sheaves and transverse shafts, shifting collars engaging the hubs of the movable clutch members, parallel links centrally connecting said collars on opposite sides thereof, a rocker shaft parallel with the set shaft and provided with eccentrics set at an angle to each other, strap heads fitted on said eccentrics and rods connecting each strap head on opposite sides of its eccentric with said links adjacent to one of said collars.
10. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft having bevel gears fixed thereon, rods fixed in the frame transversely to the set shaft, tubular shafts revolubly mounted on said rods and provided with bevel gears meshing with the gears on the set shaft and arranged to turn the same in opposite directions, drive sheaves loosely mounted on said tubular shafts, friction clutches for operatively connecting said sheaves and shafts, and a rocker shaft parallel with the set shaft and provided with eccentrics set at an angle to each other and connected with the movable members of the clutches so as to engage the members of one clutch when turned in one direction from a neutral position and the members of the other clutch when turned in the opposite direction from said position.
11. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft of shafts arranged transversely thereto and connected therewith, drive sheaves loosely mounted on said transverse shafts and arranged to turn the set shaft in opposite directions, clutches for operatively connecting said transverse shafts with the drive sheaves, a rocker shaft provided with eccentrics arranged when turned in one direction from a neutral position to engage the members of one clutch and when turned in the opposite direction from such position to engage the members of the other clutch, a brake arranged to arrest the movement of the set works, and a transverse shaft connected with said rocker shaft and adapted to apply said brake when the rocker shaft is in its neutral position and to release the brake when the rocker shaft is turned in either direction from such position.
12. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft, of transverse shafts connected therewith, drive sheaves loosely mounted on said transverse shafts and arranged to turn the set shaft in opposite directions, clutches for operatively connecting said transverse shafts with said sheaves, a rocker shaft provided with eccentrics which are connected with the movable members of the clutches and adapted when turned in one direction from a neutral position to engage the members of one clutch and when turned in the opposite direction from such position to engage the members of the other clutch, a brake arranged to arrest the movement of the set works and a transverse shaft connected with said brake and provided with an arm which is connected by a link with an arm on said rocker shaft, such brake operating connections being arranged to apply the brake when said rocker shaft is in its middle or neutral position and to release the brake when said rocker shaft is turned in either direction from such position.
13. In saw mill set works the combination with the set shaft and setting and receding sheaves, of clutches for operatively connecting either of said sheaves with the set shaft, a rocker shaft parallel with the set shaft and provided with a hand lever and with eccentrics set at an angle to each other and connected with the movable clutch members, a brake operatively connected with said rocker shaft, so as to be applied when the rocker shaft is in its middle or neutral position and to be released when said shaft is turned in either direction from said posi tion, an index wheel movable independently of the set shaft for determining the set, means for locking said wheel to turn wit-h the set shaft, and a connection between said index wheel and the rocker shaft adapted to turn the latter back to its middle or neutral position when the index wheel is returned to its home position.
