Description

"--R.S.JENN|NG-s. 'CLoT-HEs-GHEST.
N0. 120,976, Patented Nov.14,1871,
Fig. 2. in i UNITED RALPH S. JENNINGS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOTH-PROOF CLOTHING-CHESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,976, dated November 14, 1871; antedated November 1, 1871.
To all whom lit may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH S. JENNINGs, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Moth-Proof Clothing- Chests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon. v
Figure l of the drawing is a front View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section of the same.
My invention relates to chests or boxes intended for use in preserving clothing, furs, and the like, from injury by noths; and it consists in constructing such chest or box with l,a lining of cedar veneer and arranging a continuous strip of folded I`n`cii`z`t-ru`bber ribbon on the inner side of the open top thereof in such a manner that the lid or cover, when properly fastened, will render such box air-tight.
A of the drawing represents the main body of my chest, and B a compartment intended to hold furs. c represents veneer, of Spanish cedar, which serves as a lining' for the entire box: This cedar lining, for the purpose designed,is found to serve quite as well as solid timber, and the use thereof proves to be a great economy. y represents a strip or ribbon of India rubber, which is folded and nailed to the inner side of the open top of the box, as shown, in such manner that its single folded side is brought uppermost and serves as a yielding bed to the chest-lid when the same is pressed down, thereby rendering the box airtight.
Heretofore, in the manufacture of similar boxes, great difficulty has been experienced in providing means by which the odor of the cedar could all be retained in the box and all vermin excluded. I iind by experiment that absolute exclusion of air is essential to prevent the eggs of moths from vitalizing into destroying pests, and I am able to effect this object by applying Indiarubber ribbons in the manner stated. I find, also, that cheapness of manufacture is also proinoted by the means described.
D represents the lid of my chest proper, and H the lid to the fur-box.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the Vchest A with the cedar lining y and rubber strips c, folded and attached as described and specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RALPH S. JENNINGS.
