AARON J. HULL, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,973, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON J. HULL, of Sterling, in the fcounty of Whiteside and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Pumps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a valve for Wooden pumps, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which. represents a vertical section of so much of a pump as will illustrate my inven tion.
A represents the upper part of the pipe or tubing that goes down into the well, and B is the top of the pump fitting over the end of the pipe A and extending above the well. 0 represents the valve-seat, to fit in the pipe A, and is provided with a bail, D, so that it can be readily lifted out when desired. Around the upper end of the valve-seat O is formed a rim or flange, a, forming a sand-chamber between the same and the upper end of thepipe A, aroun d a portion of the valve-seat. On the upper side of the valveseat 0 is a rim, 1), upon which the valve E rests. This rim being narrow no sand can lodge on the same and cause any leakage, but the sand must either come on the outside or on the inside.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the'pump-section B and the pump-section A, fitting into the section B and forming an interior annular shoulder, hollow valve-seat O with rims a and b, valve E, and bail D, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of September, 1.871.
