RANDOLPH SHIPLEY, OIE DRUMRJ 'GHT, OKLAHOMA.
I PIPE-TONGS.
Application filed September 12, 1916. Serial No. 119,796.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANDOLPH W. SHIP- LEY, a eitizenof the United States, residing at Drumright, in the county of Creek and State of Oklahoma,
lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe-tongs and it has for its primary aim to provide a strong and durable tong or wrench of simple construction which will eiiiciently grip a pipe or other articles arranged within its embrace.
Further, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a rear elevation of a wrench embodying the present improvements and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to like parts by similar characters of reference, the serrated jaw faces A and B have depending stems through which extend transverse securing pins G. The jaw face 13 is mounted on the forward upper edge of a shank F which is suitably shaped into a handle. The jaw face A is carried on the forward end of a hooked or.
arc-shaped jaw which has its opposite end bifurcated to straddle the rear upper edge of said shank to which it is pivotally secured by a pin or bolt.
An operating lever B is pivoted between its ends to the .shank F one end-being formed into a handle and the opposite end being offset to lie in the plane of the web end of the jaw C to which the jaw face A is fixed. The upper end of the operating lever terminates substantially opposite the upper part of the jaw O. A connecting link D joins the operating lever with the jaw C at their upper opposing portions whereby the link is horizontally disposed and transmits the power from the lever to the jaw tangentially of the latter. The pivotal point of the link D on the jaw C is forward of the pivotal mounting of the latter on the shank F so that movement of the jaw is inward or downward. Movement of one jaw face toward the other is limited by the operhave invented lan Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, of which the fol-.
I pivoted to the end of said shank ating lever coming in contact with the adacent bifurcationof jaw C.
What I claim is:
1."A pipe wrench comprising a shank having a stationary jaw, a. movable jaw pivoted at one end to the shank and having a aw face on its stationary jaw, an operating lever pivoted between its ends to the shank, said lever having its outer end terminating adjacent the outer end of the movable jaw, and a link arranged transversely of. the shank and connecting the said outer end of the lever to the tangential push on saidmovable jaw.
2. Pipe tongs comprising a shank having a fixed jaw on one end, a movable jaw adjacent the fixed jaw and provided with a face over hanging and opposing the latter, and an operating lever pivoted to the. shank and connected to the movable jaw, the latter serving as a stop for the pivotal movement of the lever. V
3. Pipe tongs comprising a shank having afixed jaw on one end, a movable jaw pivoted to the end of said shank adjacent the fixed jaw and provided with a face overhanging and opposing the latter, an operating lever pivoted to the shank and extended to alpoint substantially opposite the outer end of the movable jaw whereby a force exerted on the lever will be transmitted substantially tangential to the mov able jaw, and a connecting link between the outer end of the movable jaw and said ex tended end of the lever.
4. In a pipe wrench, a shank having a fixed jaw, a movable jaw having a bifureated part straddling the shank and pivoted thereto, an operating lever pivoted to the shank and having its outer end disposed approximately opposite to the outer end of the movablej aw, and a link connected to the lever and outer end of the movable jaw.
5. In a pipe wrench, a shank having a fixed jaw to grip one faee of a pipe, 21. pivoted jaw connected to said shank to grip the opposite face of the plp, and means for applying a tangential clamping force to the pivoted jaw at a point including a rigid link disposed-at points outwardly beyond and other end opposing the Specification of Letters Patent. Pgwent@d D 119, 9116,
'said outer end of the movable jaw to exert a.
opposite said second named face of the ipe. pivoted to the extremity of the curved Outer 6. A pipe Wrench including a shank avend of the lever and the outer end of said ing a fixed jaw, a curved elementpivoted at curved element. its inner end to the shank adjacent said fixed In Witness whereof, I have hereunto 5 jaw and havin a jaw at its outer end conafiixed my signature in the presence of sub- 15 fronting said Xed jaw, an operating lever scribing witnesses.
pivoted to the shank and having its outer RANDOLPH W. SHIPLEY. end curved and extending over and beyond 'Witnesses: the curved element, and a link arranged at W. L. MoA'rnn,
10 substantially right angles to the shank and P. A. HARRISON.
