GRIPPING-TOOL.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SAMUEL Francis ROBINSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Barsham, Beccles, in the county of Suffolk, England, have invented improvements in Gripping-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to smiths tongs, pliers, and other similar' gripping tools, which, as ordinarily constructed cannot have their jaws opening parallel er approximately parallel owing' to the jaw levers being crossed atl the fulcrum (as in scissors), and where, Vas in specially constructed power pliers, a parallel motion is obtained, the jaw opening is very limited, involving for varied sizes of work to be gripped the use of a number of different sizes of tools.
To make one pair of smiths tongs or one pair of pliers take the place of many or render them suitable for a large range of the ordinary work for which tongs and pliers are required, including gas pipe and ordinary Spanner work, tongs, pliers and similar tools are according to this invention provided with two jaws one of which is extended to form a hand grip and has fulcrumed to it a lever that is formed with a corresponding hand grip and is connected at the side of the fulerum remote from the grip by a link to the other jaw which is formed with a lateral extension pivotcd to its fellow at a point between t-he lever fulcrum and the hand grip, the pivot-al connections or certain of them being capable of adjustment whereby the range of opening and power to grip may be made suitable for a large variety of work. In some constructions a device can be provided adapted to secure the two hand grips against relative movement and thereby look the jaws in a work gripping position. In such cases the hand grip extension of the one jaw can be adapted to be readily secured to a bench or other suitable support for the purpose of acting as a vise.
Figures l and 2 of the accompanying illustrative drawings show in elevations at right angles to each other a pair of pliers constructed according to this invention. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part thereof. Figs. 4t and 5 are similar views to Figs. l and 2 showing a pair of smiths tongs according to this invention. Figs. 6 and 7 are also Specification of Letters Patent.

ln the several constructions illustrated the link a is in the form of a bridle wherein the gripping jaws L, 1 are a sliding fit and is adjustably pivoted at c to one jaw b that has an L shaped extension (Z the foot of which is adjustably pivoted at e about midway down the lever arm f of its opposing jaw b1 (hereinafter referred to as the opposing aw) the power closing and opening lever g is pivoted at one end to the bridle link a at /L and is fulcrumed adjustably at 7c in a recessed extension m at the back of and below the gripping portion of the opposing jaw. Gripping the power lever g and the arm f so as to press them toward each other causes the power lever g to draw the jaws Z and 7) together by means of the bridle link u.
The work grij'iping portions of the jaws L, 711 may be separately made and each riveted between two steel plates forming the remaining portions l and .7 of the jaws (Figs. l, 2, G and 7), a portion of the handle f passing between the plates of the l. shaped jaw extension (Z. The bridle link a can be formed of one U shaped bent link riveted at the open end by a shouldered pin 7L to which the end of the power lever g is pivoted, as shown in Figs. i, 2, 3, 4t and 5.
71.1 L-, Fig. 3, are washers on the pin L between the sides of the link a and t-he lever g, so that the link sides can be straight, as shown, instead of being bent inwardly at their outer ends. Instead of a shouldered pin 7i, the link ends may, as shown in Figs. G and 8 be clamped by a bolt h2 to a ferrule 7b3 on which the lever g is pivoted. The ferrule is of such length as to prevent the lever end being nipped. This construction enables the link a to be removed when the bolt 7a2 is withdrawn, an arrangement that is desirable when the jaws E, b1 are wider than the gap between the link sides. `Series otl pin holes 0 are provided in the bridle link ci and toot otl the extension jaw Z that the jaws b1 may be brought closer together or set farther apart parallel or at any desired angle.
To increase or decrease the range ot action of the power lever g, the tulcrum pin 7c in the recessed extension m formed in the back of the opposing jaw b1 may be placed in one or other ot holes 7) provided therefor.
By withdrawing its pivot pins c and c the jaw Z) may be removed and a spare one formed especially for gripping gas pipe can be inserted in its place, or it or the opposing jaw b1, or both, may be formed to receive a gas pipe die g, see Figs. 9 and 10, which, for instance, may be recessed at the back to tit the jaw tace and be held in position by al pin r passing through it and the jaw. Each adjusting pin c, e and is threaded at one end which is screwed into the one side ot' the bridleor jaw so as to secure the pin in place.
llVhen the arm 7 is formed ot plates riveted to the jaw b1 as shown in Figs. l, 2, G and 7, a block or plate of tlber or other suitable material can be riveted between the plates thereof.
The toot. of the jaw extension Z may, as shown in Fig. i, be extended and formed with holes 0l adapted to receive a locking pin behind the 'arm g that prevents the aws opening.
1n the pliers shown in Fig. 1, the jaws Z), b1 are formed with serrated recesses suitable for gripping gas pipes and the like.
