a differential feeding mechanism for a feed ,up the arm sewing machine, of which the type is illustrated in Patent No. 583,415, of May 25th, 1897. Reference isv made to said patent for a-general understanding of the construction. and arrangement of the parts of the machine, although it will be understood that the present construction of feeding mechanism might be used on other types of machines.
The invention therefore consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.

In these drawings, the machine is of the type above referred to, except that it has in addition thereto, vibrating thread-carrying fingers which lay threads back and forth,

looper shaft This machine is well known in the art as the Union Special side'wheel triple interlock machine, and as to its details need not be especially referred to, referenc'e being had to the aforesaid patent.
In these drawings, 1 represents the usual standard of a machine of the type indicated,
which has a transverse shaft operating the various mechanisms carried Within the cylindrical casing or work supporting arm 2. The looper shaft is shown at 9, the feed bar at 10, and the feed reciprocating lever at 11, these parts being operated from the main transverse shaft 12, above in the usual way in the casing at 16, and at .its outer end has links 17 which straddle the loopershaft, and at their upper ends, are attached to apart of the feed mechanism in order to give the same its up and down. movements.
The feed reciprocating lever 11 is operated from the main shaft, and is pivot win has the upw 5 M nection at 32 with the bar 23. To the opposite end of this bar 23-is adjustably secured themain feed rod 26, to which at its outer end, is secured by a screw the head 27 carrying (the side and intermediate portions of the main. feed dog, 28. The bar 23 has a split sleeve at itsend, which receives the rod 26 and ascrew 23 clamps the parts together. Except for the exact construction of the main feed rod, -.the main feed dog and the part 19, theseelements are all substantially of the construction illustrated in the aforesaid patent.
The part 19 has attached to it the arm 29 Y which surrounds the cross shaft 18, and at its forward end is pivoted to the vertical link 30, which at its upperend is pivoted to the bell crank'lever 31 having pivotal conthis bell crank lever is provided with a slot 33, in which is adjustably secured one end of the lever 34 secured at 35 to the rear part 36 of the auxiliary feed frame. This lever 34 has a hand piece 37 by means of which it may be manipulated to adjust the rear end of said lever 34 up and down in the slot'33, to vary the amount of reciprocation of said lever 34. The auxiliary feed frame is com posed of the rear part 36 and the forward part 38, which respectively have central openings39 for the passage of the main feed bar 26. These two parts 36 and 38 are connected by abar 40 formed of two parts adjustable one on the other. The bar 40 ispinned at each end between projections 41 on each block 36 and 38. Below the bar 40, a trough-shaped block 42 engages the main feed bar, this block being connected to the link 17 hereinbefore referred to. The
forward block 38 has integrally formed with upon the main feed rod 26. By this means,
andaccording to the position of the end of the lever34 in theslot 33, a differential movement of the auxiliary feed dog with respect to the main feed dog is given, thus giving the usual desirable action attendant upon a differential feed in the sewing of. fabrics, particularly knit goods, in which it is desired to gather the goods slightly ahead of the. needles.
As shown in Figs. 13 and 14 the underside of the throat plate is cut out or recessed as at 46 to house the side bars 43 of the auriliary feed dog.- By the pivotal connection of the bell crank lever 31 with the bar 23, the former has not only an oscillating movement on its pivot to reciprocate the supple mental feed dog, but a bodily reciprocating movement, and thereby the differential movement is compounded. Furthermore, the making of the bar 40 in two parts ad-. justable on the other provides an additional adjustment for the auxiliary feed. This, is desirable in the assembling of the machine to make the feed dog conform to the slots in the throat plate, and also to make one feed conform to another. The main feed-dog bar is carried through the center of the block 38, and the latter bears on the sides of the guiding slot formed by milling out the outer end of the casing.
It will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and operation of the auxiliary feeding mechanism, but many modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus vparticular y described my invention, what I claim as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I a 1. A machine having a work supporting arm, a looper support arranged longitudinally-thereof, a feeding mechanism also arranged longitudinally thereof, including a reciprocatingfeed dog carrying bar, and a supplemental "feed dog carrying frame sup ported by and reciprocating longitudinally relative to said feed dog carrying bar.
2. A machine having a work supporting arm, a looper shaft arranged longitudinally thereof, a feeding mechanism also arranged longitudinally thereof, including a recipro eating feed dog carrying bar, a supplemental feed dog carrying frame supported by and reciprocating longitudinally relative to said-feed carrying bar, bothof said feed dogs projecting beyond the end of the work supporting arm, and the looper support on the end of the looper shaft being beneath the same. V
3. A machine having a work supporting arm, a looper shaft arranged longitudinally thereof, a feeding mechanism also arranged longitudinallythereof, including a reciprocating feed dog carrying bar, a supplemental feed dog carrying frame supported by andreciprocating longitudinally relative to said feed dog carrying bar, and means for adjusting the movements of the feed bar and feed frame;
4. In combination with a main feed bar, a
block below the mediate bar connecting the two parts and a supporting bearing for said main feed bar between the parts of frame. 5. In combination with a main feed bar,
a supplementalfeed frame composed of two parts surrounding the main feed bar adjacent its ends; and movable thereon, and an intermediate bar pivoted. to both of said parts.

In combination with a main feed bar, a supplemental feed frame composed of two parts surrounding the main feed bar adjacent its ends and movable thereon, an intermediate bar pivoted to both of said parts, a' intermediate bar supporting the main feed bar, and means connected to said block for raising and lowering the feed bar and feed frame.
7. A feeding mechanism including a slidthe supplemental feed ing main feed bar, a differential feed frame supported on both ends of s id bar and slid able thereon, the forward endof said feed frame being provided with an open feed dog frame, and-the main frame being provided with a feed dog contained within said feed dog frame. A feeding mechanism including a sliding main feed bar, a differential feed frame supported 011 both ends of said bar and slidable 'thereon,-the forward end of said feed frame being formed with an integral open feed dogvframe, nd the main feed dog being provided with a feed dog inclosed by said feed dog frame.
9. In a sewing machine having a work supporting arm, a feeding mechanism ar ranged longitudinally thereof to feed the goods longitudinally of said work supporting arm, said feeding mechanism including a main feed dog reciprocating bar, and a supplemental feed dog carrying frame sup ported by the main feed dog bar, with means for imparting to the frame a difierential movement relative to the bar.
10. In a sewing machine having a work supporting arm, a feeding mechanism arranged longitudinally thereof to feed the goods longitudinally of said work supporting arm, said feeding mechanism including a main feed dog reciprwating bar, and a supplemental feed dog carrying frame supported by the main feed dog supporting bar, with means for imparting to the frame a differential movement relative to the bar,
and means for independently adjusting the movement of each 0 members.
11. In a sewing machine having a work supporting arm, a feeding mechanism arranged longitudinally thereof, to feed the goods longitudinally of said work supportthe feed dog carrying ing arm, said feeding mechanism including a main feed dog reciprocating bar, a supplemental feed dog carrying frame supported by the main feed dog supporting bar, with means for imparting to the frame a difierentia-l movement relative to the bar, said supplemental feed dog carrying frame inclosing the main feed dog reciprocating bar, and means them in unison.
12. In a sewing machine in combination with a main feed bar, a supplemental feed mechanism, including a pivoted lever attached to the main feed bar, means for oscillating said lever, and a lever adjust-ably secured at one end to said pivoted lever and attached to the supplemental. feed mechanism,
for raising and lowering auxiliary feeding mechanism including. an
auxiliary frame, an oscillating means, a bell crank lever pivoted to the main feed bar, and having one arm connected to said oscil-- lating means, the other armbeing provided with a slot, and a lever pivoted at one end to the auxiliary frame, and at the other end adjustably secured in said slot.

In a feeding mechanism, a main feed bar, a supplemental feed. bar, a rocking frame, a second rocking frame movable bodily by the'first rocking frame and having an independent connection with the first rocking frame whereby the oscillations of the first rocking frame are'impar'ted to said second rocking frame, and connections between the first rocking frame and the main feed bar and connections with the second rocking frame and the'supplemental feed bar for moving said feed bars longitudinally."

A sewing machine including in combina-tion, a standard, a horizontal work supporting arm carried by and projecting from said standard, a feeding mechanism com- .prising a main feed bar extending longitudinally of and located within said work supporting arm, a main feed dog carried thereby, means for raising and lowering said main feed bar means for moving said main feed bar back and forth, an auxiliary feed dog carrying support carried by and reciprocating longitudinally relative to the main feed bar and movable up and down with said main feed bar, an auxiliary feed dog carried by said auxiliary feed dog carrying support and means for moving said auxiliary feed dog carrying support back and forth, including devices located withinsaid work supporting arm.

. 19. In a sewing machine, a differential feeding mechanism, a work supporting arm having a guiding slot, a main and a supplemental feed bar and said supplemental feed bar being carried on said main feed her and having the sides of the supplemental feed bar in engagement with the guiding slot.

In a feeding mechanism, a main and a supplemental feed dog, said supplemental feed dog having side bars extendingfrom front to back and in a plane outside 'of its feeding tooth, the throat plate having a cut-- away portion upon'its under side. for housing the side bars of the supplemental feed 2 1. In combination with a main feed bar, a supplemental feed frame composed of two parts surrounding the main feed bar adjarent 1ts ends and movable'there'on, an adjustable intermediate bar pivoted to looth'of said parts, ablockloelow the intermediate bar supporting the main feed bar, and means connected to said block for raising and lowering the feed bar and feed frame.
