HAMMER-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed. January 27, 1915. Serial No. 4,968.
To all w ham it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MONVILLE HOLMDAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and- State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammer- Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hammer heads, the principal object being two-fold. First, to provide an improved means for pulling nails, and second, to provide means for holding nails in the head to enable them to be started in the position out of reach of the hand.
With these and other objects in View my invention consists in the novel construction as set forth in the following specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 isa view in side elevation of an improved hammer constructed in accordance with my invention. 'Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view on 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. a is a view in elevation looking toward the inside of the hammer head showing a modified form of construction.
Denoting corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes in general the hammer head having socket 2, through which is an eye 3 for securing the usual handle 4. Formed in one side of the socket and preferably integral therewith is a portion 5 projecting slightly beyond the inner face of the socket as shown at 6 and having an undercut slot 7 the head of a nail being adapted to fit between this undercut portion and the outer surface of the socket. At right angles to the undercut slot and central in member 5, is out a V-shaped notch 8 through which the nail shank is adapted to extend when the head is seated in slot 7. At the rear of this member adjacent the prongs is provided a larger V-shaped notch 9, which I prefer to slightlyundercut as shown at 10. This V- shaped notch is so arranged that the head of a nail may be inserted therein with the shank held between the claws 12, which are made sharp on the inner edge, as indicated at 11. In this manner the nail is held suiliciently tight so that a blow may be delivered with a hammer starting the nail in a position out of reach of the hand.
In pulling a nail the prongs 12 are first inserted under the head and the nail withdrawn in the usual manner, as far as practical, with these prongs. This raises the nail a sufficient distance to enable the nail head to be inserted in groove 7 when it may be withdrawn the remaining distance.
I am aware of the several devices where the same purposes have been patented, but my device is less clumsy and departs less from the regular hammer construction than any of these devices. At the same time I have secured an additional feature, which enables the nail to be held while starting the same out of ordinary reach. While I have shown the member 5 as being formed integral with the handle socket, I may find it desirable to make this member in a sepa rate piece and insert the same in some such form as shown in Fig. 4, wherein the member 5 is held to the socket by the dovetail joint 13.
It will thus be apparent that I have provided a very' effective, simple, and useful device, and while I have shown the preferred construction and embodiment of my invention it will be understood that changes may be made in form and proportion without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is A hammer head comprising a handle socket, a curved claw, a thickened wall on the side of said socket adjacent the claw, said wall having a transverse slot forming an overhanging lip and a notch in said lip extending from said slot to the outer surface of said socket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MONVILLE HOLMDAHL.
