Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED S. QRcHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Galleys, of which the following is a speci cation.

My said invention consists in an improyed construction of printers. galleys, relating particularly to the end thereof, which is constructed to be readily removable and, at the same time, to be securely locked in position and aid in supporting the sides of the galley in proper form,'all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printers galley constructed in accordance with my said invention, Fig. 2 a cross section on the dotted line 22 in Fig. 3, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section on the dotted line 3-3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: a perspective view of the removable end separately, as seen when looking into the underside thereof.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the body or floor of the galley, and B the frame of the removable end.

The body A of the galley is made preferably of a single sheet of metal having its sides a first doubled over and then bent upwardly at right angles therewith, forming crimps or beads 10 along the edges of the composed of the doubled metal, serving the two-fold purpose of stiffening the sides and enabling them to stand perpendicularly in relation to the floor without an angle at the corner to interfere with the per pendicular set of the type. The end member B is likewise formed of a sheet of metal of appropriate thickness, stamped in the form shown. The front and rear sides thereof 11 and 12 are bent downwardly at right angles with the top, and the projecting end 20 of flange 11 is bent in to stand parallel with one side a of the galley, while its other end 21 is bent in to stand parallel with the other side a of the body, the two ends thus supporting said sides a against inward bending. The outer ends of the top of the plate are bent downwardly at right angles, forming flanges 13 which are spaced from ends 20 and 21 to fit over the edges of the sides a of the galley, forming narrow ways between are interposed between pins galley,

A perforation is formed in each of said flanges and in the end flanges 20 and 21, in which locking pins 15 are mounted to slide. Said locking pins 15 are formed with handle members 16 projecting at right angles therefrom, by whichthey may be operated with the thumb and finger of the hand. Coiled springs 17 18 and the flanges 141 and serve to normally hold said pins outwardly. Perforations 22 are formed in the sides of the galley,

near each end, into which these locking pins are adapted to be inserted. Notches 28 are formed in one side of member B to receive and lock handle member 16 when the galley is in condition for use.

In operation, the operator, by the thumb and finger, presses the members 16 together, compressing the springs 17 and drawing the ends of the locking pins 15 flush with the outer surface of the in-turned ends of the side pieces of the end member B. The end member is then placed in position, with the flanges 13 overhanging the sides a of the and slid to a position where the locklng pins will register with the perforations 22 at either end. The springs 17 are then allowed to expand, forcing the locking pins 15 into said perforations and securing said end member from further movement.

This construction provides a rigid end, but one that can be readily removed or shifted from one end to the other of the galley, or adjusted by forming the perforations 22 at such points as may be desired.

aving thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A printers galley comprising a body member with sides upturned at right angles with the floor thereof, and an end member formed to fit between said sides and slide freely lengthwise of said galley and also formed with flanges overhanging the top edges of said body member which serve to guide said end member and connect the same with said body member and prevent the spreading of the sides of said body member, and means for locking said end member in sheet-metal and hav ng side portions in-i adjusted position on said body member, substanti'ally as set forth.

4:, A printers galley comprising a body member having side portions, an adjustable endpiece therefor constructed of sheet metal having a side portion with inturned ends,

and a top portion w1th downwardly disposed flanges at the ends and intermediate said ends, said side portion provided with notches; and a pair of spring tensioned locking pins mounted-0n said intermediate flanges and he inturned ends for securing vthe end piece to said body member, said p'ins having-portions adapted to engage within said notches to lock the pins in adjusted position, substantially as, set. forth.
