Be a known that I, JOHN c. sIN'N, a Citi- `zen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable lothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to door locks, and has for its primary object to provide simple and efficient means whereby a door may be securely locked from either the inside or outside of the door, and yet which may be unlocked from inside of the same upon actuation of the latch retracting knob.

A further object of the invention is yto provide a device of this character which is of simple and inexpensive construction, the

parts of which are all so arranged orassembled as to be positivey in operation and yet proof against breakage, fwear, or derangement of the same, and which will prove thoroughly eiiicient in the attainment of the ends forfwhich it is designed.

With these objects in viewtogether with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention residesin the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all

as will be described more fully hereinafter,y illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1, is a vertical sectional view taken through a lock embodying my invention, the said view being taken from the inside of the door and illustrating the lock bolt in locked position, Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the lock bolt retracted by operation of the latch stem, Fig. 3, is a sectional view taken on line 3-8 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the lock casing is indicated at 5. This casing is of preferably shallow construction, and is closed at one side by the removable plate 6; the said casing being adapted for insertion within the free edge of a door.

ported therein by a pin or stud 8, the said stud projecting from one of the inner walls of the casing through an elongated slot 9 in the latch shank, acoil spring 10 being arranged in the said slot to abutl at 'one end with the stud 8 and at its'opposite end with the end wall of the slot. This construction obviously maintains'the latch boltl normally in extended or latching position. The innermost end of thel latch'shankis widened and j apertured as at 11 to permit of the latch actuating knob stem extending therethrough, and the extremity lof the said widened portion provides a -laterally Aextending flange 12 to beengaged by thefknob lugs to lretract thelatch. l n I j Mounted .withinV the. casing beneath the latch shank and in parallel relation thereto isy alslidinglock bolt 12, the'said bolt being supported .by the bracketl lugs 14 within Vthe casing, and is yieldably held Iin either extended or retracted position by the spring 15,

lthe latter being secured at one end to the lock casing and-engaging the stud 16 at its free end. The lower edge of the lockbolt at the innermost end of the latterl is notchedV l as at 17 Vto permit of the engagement withv a 'key detent inserted'through the key hole 18 of the casingjor plate to extend or retract the lock bolt asdesired. v'Lugs' 19 project inwardly from the "side of the casing upon each side of the key hole .18, the innermost faces of the saidv lugs being serrated or notched as at 20 to enable the notched edge of the key detent freely passing by the lugs, but to prevent the use of unauthorized keys for retracting the lock bolt. Projecting laterally from the upper edge of the lock bolt adjacent the yrear end of the latter is a shoulder 21, the said( shoulder extending preferably the entire depth of the casing.

The latch actuating knobs are indicated at 22 and 23, the former being the knob ex-y tending to the outside of the door, while the latter projects inwardly from the door. These knobs are provided with the usual stems 24, angular in cross section, one of the said stems being provided at its inner ex' tremity with a socket or recess 25 for the accommodation of a reduced projection 26 upon the extremity of the opposite stem, the

stems thus arranged being extended through the apertured end of the latch shank and forming a continuous latch actuating bar disposed transversely of the lock casing.

Secured upon each of the latch actuating stems and in close proximity 'to each other are the latch retracting lugs y27v and 28 respectively, the said lugs being adapted upon the rotation of their Vrespective stems to engage With the flange 12 at "the latch end to retract the said latch against the tensionof the spring 10. A bolt retracting arm 29l may beV formed upon the stem of the knob 23, or may be a part o'f the lug 28', the said arm projecting downwardly from its stem to 'engage With the shoulder 21 upon the bolt. From this constructionv it'is apparent that the rotation of the outsidej knob j22 Will retract thel latch shank 7, but can'in'no WayV elfect the sliding movementfof the lock bolt 12..y WhenI the lbolt12 has been projected by the use of akey inserted through the opening 18, rotation of the inner knob 23V will cause the arm' 29 'carried thereby to engage the shoulder 21 and retractlthe bolt 12.

Vhen fully retracted, the bolt will beso' held by thel spring 15. By this construction, the

door mayY be securely locked from either side, and held against' unlocking movement through any rotation ofthe outer knob', but which Willf-be instantly unlocked upon rotarymovement being Yapplied tothe inner knob 23. Locks of this' character are adapted specially for use upondoors of school houses, public buildings, and other such places wherein it may be found necessary to quickly open the eXit, it being readily seen that the insertion of a key Will notbev necessary to unlock the door from'the inside.` While I'ha'yev herein shown and described a particular or' preferred embodiment ofthe invention, various changes may be made in the minor details of construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention or 'exceeding the scope of the claims.

In a lock of the class described,a casing, latch stems projecting from said casing and being mountedifor rotation independently of each other, a latch mounted for sliding movement in said casing, one of said latch members being enlarged `and apertured for in'closing said stems, a flange projecting laterally from said widened portion, latch actu'ating'llugs' on said stemsV adapted to engage saidflangea lock bolt mounted for sliding movementin said casing, a shoulder onsaid bolt, an arm onfone of said lugs adapted'to engage said shoulder, means for locking said bolt, means foryieldably holding said latch projected, and means for yieldably supporting said lock bolt in extended or retracted position, substantially as described.
