FLOOR- OR CEILING PLATE.
This invention relates to. what are com-' monly known as flooror ceiling plates for application to pipes where the pipes pass through the floors, ceilings, walls or other parts of buildings, for covering .and con cealing theholes through which the pipes ass. p The objects of the invention are to provide a device of this nature which is attractive in appearance; simple of manufacture; economical of production; and which is extremely convenient of application to a pipe. With the above objects in view I provide a construction set forth in the annexed claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, wherein- Figure 1 is asection through a pipe which has one of my improved plates applied there to; Fig. 2 is a section through the pipe showing the side of the plate opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, or the side which is adjacent the floor or other-part of the building through which the pipe passes; Fig. 3 is'a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the same showing the plate as applied to a vertical pipe and resting upon the floor; Figs. 4 and 5 are sections taken on the lines 44 and 5-5, respectively, of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 illustrates a modified and simplified form of the plate.
The form of plate illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, and which will be designated, generally, by A, comprises two semi-annular members 1 and 2. Projecting from one end of the member 1 is a semi-circular ear 3, and the opposite end of the same member is provided with a lug or extension ,4. It will be stated herethat I prefer to make my improved plate of sheet-metal stampings;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 19, 1916. Application filed May 2, 1914. Serial No. 835,789.
and in the formation of the member 1, the metal adjacent the lug or extension 4 is depressed a depth equal to the thickness of the metal. The end of the lug or extension 4, as will be seen most clearly from Fig. 4, is turned downwardly to form an inclined end for the lug; and at about its center, the depressed portion 5 is provided with a slot or aperture 6. Upon referring to Fig. 8, .it will be'seen that the member 1 has its outer edge turned over at right angles to its body portion to produce a flange or skirt 7, the edge of which is adapted to contact with the surface through which the pipe B extends; and at its inner edge, the member 1 is provided with a bead 8 which renders the plate stiff and substantial, as well as attractive in appearance.
The member 2 is very similar to the member 1, the same having a skirt or flange .10 which extends along its outer edge, and a bead 11 along its inner edge. One end of the member 2 has a semi-circular extension 12, and pivoted to this extension, by the rivet 13, is the extension 3 of the member 1, said extensions being pivoted on a center which is substantially concentric to the curved edges of both. The portion of the member 2 which is overlaid by the proiection 3. and adiacent part of member 1. is de ressed a depth 7 corresponding to the thickness of said proiection or member. Pivoted together in this manner. the members 1 and 2 mav be se arated as indicated bv the dotand-dash line position of the member 2 in Fig. 1. To permit of this movement. it will be observed that the 'end of the flange or skirt 10 of them'emher adiacent the pivoted end of the member. is pressed inwardly as shown at 15 in order thatit may clear the end of the flange or skirt 7. of the member 1 when the members are swung to open positione Proiecting from the 'end of the memberQ, opposite its pivoted end. is a semi-circular extension 16 that is adapted to be received bv the de ressed portion. 5 of themember 1. At about its center the extension 16 is provided with a depending tongue 17 which extends from the body portion of the member 2 and is turned downwardly at substantially right angles thereto as shown clearly in Fig. 4. This tongue is arranged to be received by the aperture 6 in the end of the member 1.
Assuming that the parts have been separated for application to a pipe, the plate is placed around the pipe and the parts are pressed together, the tongue 17 engaging and riding up the inclined end of the lug 4: of the member 1 and across the upper sur face thereof until it is brought into register with the aperture 6, when, through the resiliency of the metal, it is caused to snap into said aperture.
For securing the plate to: the pipe B, I provide a set screw 18 which is threaded through the flange or skirt 10 of the. member 2 and which has its inner and smooth end 19 guided through an aperture 20 in the ear 21 that depends from the inner edge of the bead 11, and is in radial alinement with the threaded aperture in the flange or skirt 10 through which the screw 18 operates. In this way, the inner end of the screw is very effectively guided and held in place. While I have shown but one of such screws, and have shown it as carried by the member 2, it is obvious that the same might be as effectively carried-by the member 1, or that each member might be provided with such a securing means, if desired.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that my invention provides a very convenient floor or ceiling plate, and that the same is very attractive in appearance.
The form of ring shown in Fig; 6 consists of an annulus which is the same, in cross section, as either of the members/1 or 2 of the previous form. This form of plate is for application to a pipe when the same is being installed, andis adapted to be slipped over the end of the pipe and brought into contact with the surface through which the pipe passes. The plate is designated A and is held in place upon the pipe by the set screw 22 that is threaded through the peripheral skirt or flange 23 and has its smooth, inner end 24 guided by the ear 25.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1, A device of the character set forth comprising an annulus having a peripheral flange which extends at right angles from its body portion and a bead which rises from its body portion adjacent its inner edge, the peripheral flange having an opening, a perforated ear which extends from the inner edge of the bead and is in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the aforesaid flange, and a set screw which is threaded through the opening in the flange and has its inner end guided through the perforation of the aforesaid ear;
