Description

` W. E. ELLIOTT.
SHOE BUTTON. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 21, 191e Patented De. 19, 1916.
f Q7 l WILLIAM E. ELLIOTT, or GRAND nAPIDs, MICHIGAN.-
' SHOE-BUTTON.
Specification of Application led March 21 .To all whom t may concern.'
1 Be it known that I, .WILLIAM E. ELLIOTT,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful AImprovements in Shoe-Buttons; and I do hereby declare the Vfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willv enable others skilled in the artto' which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a button construction especially adapted for use in shoe buttonsin which an attaching loop or veye is permanently secured to and projects from the underside of the button.
It is the object and purpose of my invention to provide a construction in which a shoe button having a head formed of pearl or like comparatively fragile material, may
e equipped with an insert of different material in its under side, whereby the completed head may have a downwardly projecting neck ofcircular outline, the sides of which curve upwardly and outwardly from the lower end of the neck to meet the under sides of the main body of the head. In the manufacture of pearl buttons itis substantially impossible to form, in any practical manner, a completed head and neck of this description entirely of pearl or the like. My invention permits the formation of a button having all of the functions of a button of this character yet which so far as any portions of the button-disclosed in use are Vcon-- ce1-ned will show only the pearl or like material.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of means for attaching the head and the insert together, this attachment being eected by securing the loop or eye to the button head.
Other objects and purposes of the invention will appear with understanding of a preferred embodiment thereof as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken centrally through a shoe button made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar section taken through the button at right angles to the section illustrated in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an under plan view of the'shoe button. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the insert and the attaching loop; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a plug which is inserted in the upper side of the button head Y diverging sides 2.

and.` connected to the ends of the wireforming the attaching loop.
Like yreference characters' refer toflike parts throughout 'the several views of the drawing.
similar ma'terialand has acentral opening therethrough, the upper end of which has On the underside the head l is bored to form a circular recess 3,
the center of which is coincident with the j a'Xis of the opening through the-head. An insert comprised of a body Ll of circular outline and a downwardly projecting neck 5 is formed of any suitable material. In practice this material will be any regular button material such as papier-mache or the like and the neck has upwardly and outwardly curved surfaces extending from the lower end of the neck to the points where it meets the under surface 7 ofthe head l, the thickness of the body 4 being such that a smooth and unbroken surface is presented at the juncture of the insert and the head l.
The underside of the insert is slotted for a distance as shown at 8 to form a seat for the upper part of a loop 9, this loop being formed of wire, the ends l0 of which are brought together, passed through the insert and into the lower end of the central opening in the head l. A plug comprised of a conical head and a cylindrical extension 12 is passed into the opening from the upper end, its lower end meeting the upper ends of the wires l0 and is permanently secured thereto, preferably by electric welding, it being evident that when so connected the loop, head and insert are permanently secured together making a complete button which has a head of pearl or like material, a neck of any other suitable material which may be readily fashioned into the form desired and a loop depending from the neck together with a metal head centrally located in the upper side ofthe head which greatly adds to the appearance of the button when 1n use.
A head of the character defined may bey The head l yof the button is fof lpearl or Ilo plug and loop permits the employment of steel or like durable material for the loop Which heretofore it has been practically irnpossible to use inthis relation,
The finished button presents a pleasing and attractive appearance and the neck of novel formation added to the head gives the button all of the many advantages fully set lforth in my previous vapplication Ser. l No. 55,219, flied Oct. 11, 1915:.
1. A button comprised of a head having an opening therethrough and a recess in its underside, a loop formed of'a piece of Wire having the ends thereof brought together and inserted into said opening at one end, an insert through which said ends pass seated in the recess in the head and a plug inserted into the opening at the other end and connected With Isaid ends of the loop, substantially as described.
2. A button comprised of a head having an opening therethrough and a recess in its loop and the head, substantially as loop formed of a piece of Wire having the ends brought together and passed through i said insert and into the opening in the head, and means for permanently connecting the described. 3L A button comprised of a head having Y an opening therethrough and a circular recess in its under side, an insert comprised of a body and a downwardly extending neck provided With 'downwardly and inwardly curving sides, said body being received Within therecess of the head to provide a smooth and unbroken surface from the neck to the head, and a Wire loop projectingy from the underside ofthe insert, said head, insertI and loop being permanently connected together,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
