Specification of Letters Patent.
DRAFT-GEAR YOKES.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed May 29, 1916. Serial No. 100,503.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, PERCY B. CAMP, acitizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Draft-Gear Yokes, of which the following'is a specification and which are illustrated in the acforming -a part thereof.
The invention relates to a carrier for the yoke or coupler extension of a draft gear for railway cars; its object being to provide a support for the coupler extension upon which it may freely move without wear; and it consists broadly of a strap or plate adapted for attachment to the draft sills or plates of a railway car and provided with a roller upon which the coupler extension may ride, and more especially it consists of a structure such as is hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in'which- V *Figure l is a detail vertical transverse sec- .25
tion of a pair of draft sills or plates, of the coupler extension and of the carrier; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the carrier detached; and Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal view showing the yoke or coupler extension partially in section, a portion of the draft sill or plate in elevation, and an end view of the carrier, a
i part thereof being shown in section.
Portions of a pair of draft sills or draft plates are shown at 10, 11, and may be of any desired form of construction, and there is shown at 12 a portion of a coupler extension here having the yoke form now in common use.
cated below and attached to and connecting the draft sills or plates 10, .11. The casting may be secured to the draft sills or plates by any suitable means. As shown, the sills or plates are provided with outstanding flanges 14, 15, at their lower edges, to which flanges the carrier is applied and secured by means of bolts, as 16, 17 Preferably the carrier is provided at its ends with gibs 18, 19," engaging the outer margins of the flanges 14, 15. The carrier may also be provided with u standing transverse flanges 20, 21, located etween the draft sills or plates and The carrier-is shown as a casting 13, lo-
spaced apart to receive the coupler extension or yoke 12 and limit the lateral movement thereof.
The carrierv is provided with acage for upperface of the carrier at its middle portion, within which the roller 23 is located. In order to-avoid a useless weight of metal,
,thi spocket is formed within a downward extension 24 of the body of the carrier. Preferably ribs, as 25, 26, cross the bottom of the recess 22 and form the ways upon which the 'roller 23 runs, the channels at each side of the ribs permitting any dust or cinders to accumulate therein. The floor of the recess may also be apertured, as shown at 27, to permit the escape of dust and cinders.
v The roller 23 is of suflicient diameter so that it'projects slightly beyond the recess 22, in order that it may carry the coupler extension without permitting the latter'to rub upon the upper surface of the casting 13. While endwise movement of the roller 23 is prevented by the walls of the-recess, there -maybe provided aretaining and guiding rod 28 extending across the recess and fitting within an annular channel 29 in the roller.
The length of the recess 22 is such that the While a desirable 'form of construction is herein-shown and described, the details of the carrier may be varied therefrom without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention' 1. A carrier for a coupler extension com prising, in combination, a member adapted for attachment to the draft irons of a car and having transverse ways,' a roller runningin the ways and adapted to" support the coupler extension, such member being provided with upstanding transverse flanges forming lateral guides for the coupler extension.
2. A carrier for a coupler extension comprising, in combination; a member adapted or attachment to the' raft irons of a car and having transverse ways, a roller having a circumferential channel and funning in the ways and adapted to support the conpler extension, and a guide rod fixed in the its upper face, a roller running Within the member and loosely fitting Within the chanpocket and adapted. to support the coupler nel of the roller. extension, and means for retaining the roller 10 3. A carrier for a coupler extension comin the pocket and for guiding it in its move- 5 prising an integral casting adapted for atments.
tachment to the draft irons of a car and having atransversely extending pocket in PERCY B. CAMP.
