IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,891, dated November 14, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, L. OTTo l). MEYER, of Newtown, in the county of Fairfield and State ofConnecticut, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Match-Holders, of which the following is a specification:

The improvements relate to match-holders, so constructed as to be suitable for readily affixing to them a piece of igniting surface, (special prepared surface for igniting my safety-match 5) and the distinguishing novelty of my holders D' and D D, hereafter described, consists in a certain modification in the construction, made with the view of preventing the igniting surface, when made of thin paper, from being caught at its upper edge and torn during the act of igniting matches, and secondly, of demonstrating the principle of the holder in various and most desirable forms.

The two plates accompanying my specification contain a drawing of the holders D' and D D, embodying my invented improvements.

The noveltyin holder D' consists in being provided with the cap F. Cap F is movable on a hinge, and after the igniting surface is placed on the holder the cap F is to be dropped down on the upper edge of the igniting surface, and in such position renders the desired protection. Holder D D is constructed to be in principle similar to holder D', but to vary in appearance, and to consist of two separate parts, and for convenience I will call the one part the support," and the other the "receptacle" Both said parts are readily made of sheet metal, the support being con structed so as to be serviceable for a great variety of receptacles. Figs. 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 show the parts in their place, and Figs.Av 2, 3, and 4 show them apart. The support, separately shown byFig. 2, is open on the top, and its front plate B, with grooves C C, is similar and for the same purpose as front plate B in holder D', namely, to hold the igniting surface. In hanging up the holder the rear plate B' is to go next to the wall, and is provided, for this purpose, with two holes. The receptacle is to be inserted into the support, as shown in drawing. The receptacle D, separately shown by Fig. 3, has three iianges, overlapping the support, but may be modied, as shown by receptacle D', Fig. 4, so as to have but one flange overlapping the support, the overlap to be on front plate B, to cover or protect the upper edge of the i gniting surface Y. For a few reserve sheets of ignitin g surface sufficient space is left in the support between rear plate B' and the receptacle D or D', and in addition the support o'ers room for some reserve matches.

For afixing the igniting surface Y to its place on plate B the receptacle is to be lifted from the support, and replaced afterwards.

I do not confine myself to the form or shape of the receptacle hereinbefore indicated. The receptacle may be constructed so as to project partly or entirely above the support 5 it may be made in form similar to any common match-safe, without lid or with lid, and have at its bottom surface projecting pieces to be inserted into the support, or be without such projections on its bottom surface. In this latter case the receptacle should be hung up over the support in such a manner that part of the bottom surface of the receptacle serves as covering to the upper edge of the igniting surface.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, subordinate to my Letters Patent of August 25, 1871, is-

`1. The cap F, as shown in holder D', substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.

2. The combination of the front-plate B with the rear-plate B', as shown in the support of holder D D, and Ain 'connection with a receptacle, substantially as for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
