SEGMENTAL GRATE-BAR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPHWV. MINOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Segmental Grate-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in segmental grate bars made up of a plurality of similar segments or units having fire heads and bases and a cross bar upon which said bases are detachably mounted.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved means for detachably mounting the grate segments on the supporting bar and in the novel construction and arrangement of the bar itself which is provided, preferably at both ends, with a detachable filler block which is removable to permit the grate segments to be readily mounted on or removed from the bar without neces sitating the removal of the bar from the fire box.
My invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which in their preferred embodiments are hereinafter more particularly illustrated and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which:-
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved double bar with the two sets of grate segments thereon. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2. Figs. 4; and 5 are side and end elevations respectively of a single bar equipped with grate segments which are designed and mounted in accordance with my invention.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the arrangement of my in vention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and which I term the double bar, this bar is formed preferably by an integral casting forming two grate segment supporting bars 1 and 2 which are joined by spaced integral intermediate webs 3 and by end webs 4:, which latter have trunnion bearings 5 cast thereon. The bars 1 and 2 are preferably similar and each tapers in vertical cross section toward its bottom rounded edge and the two are disposed so that their inner side faces diverge downwardly to prevent the accumulation of cinders and ashes between them. as the bars 1 and 2. It will be noted that the side opening into the slot is shorter than the greatest depth of the slot so that it provides two spaced hook-like lips 8 and 9. The lower lip 9 is rounded to fit under the rounded bottom edge of the bar and the top lip is shaped to fit over the rounded top edge of the bar. Shoulders 10 on each side of the bases serve to suitably space the fire heads of the se ments while mounted on the bar, and, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, the segments are reversely disposed and mounted on the bars 1 and 2. Inasmuch as the slot in the segment conforms substantially in cross sectional contour with the bars on which they are mounted, they cannot be mounted on the bar except by slipping them on endwise, but this is objectionable as it would leave the segments with too much play on the barif held in position (thereon only by the side bearing bars of the box. I therefore provide at each end of each bar on its outer side a side stop or shoulder 11, and I space these shoulders on a bar to snugly receive between them the bases of a given number of segments. In order to permit the segments to be mounted on the bar, I have cutaway the top of each bar 1 and 2 near each end thereof and mounted in the cut away portion a filler block 12, which block is provided with a V-shaped base projection that fits into a corresponding V-shaped groove in the base of the cut away portion of the bar. The section of the bar that is cut away is just sufficient, when the filler block 12 is withdrawn therefrom, to permit the segments to be slipped onto the bar from the side between the shoulder 11 on one side and the inner end wall 13 of the cut away portion on the other side and, after being adjusted to position over the cut away portion, to he slipped lengthwise of the bar onto its main body portion. The bottom hook portion 9 of the segment must be engaged under the rounded bottom edge of the bar before the top lip 8 will pass over the cut away port on of the bar which is preferably rounded to correspond with the curved path of travel that the lip 8 will have as it swings to the seated position as seen in Fig. 1. By inserting the filler block endwise in place under the last segment mounted on the bar the segments are effectively held interlocked with the bar and cannot be removed without removing the filler block. Preferably the filler blocks '12 for corresponding ends of the bars 1 and ing noted that the fire head 16 is similar in shape to the fire head 6 except that it is so arranged as to extend equidistantly on each side of a longitudinal vertical middle plane through the bar 15. I provide a suitable ventilating opening 17 in each of the grate bar segments to prevent the radiation of excessive heat to the supporting bar.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A segmental grate bar comprising in combination, a bar, a grate segment comprising a fire head and a base, the base havinga slot similar to the cross section of its supporting bar and having a contracted opening through one side of the base, said side opening leaving overhanging top and bottom lips adapted to embrace the top and bottom of the bar and prevent the lateral disengagement of the segment from the bar,
and a removable portion of the bar, substantially as described.
2. A segmental grate bar comprising a bar formed of two spaced longitudinal member's, cross webs connecting said members in spaced relationship, grate sections comprising fire heads and bases, and means to mount the bases of two series of the segments on th longitudinal members, substantially as described.
3. A sectional grate bar comprising a bar formed of two spaced longitudinal members, integral cast webs connecting said members in spaced relationship and with their inside faces diverging downwardly, and two sets of spaced detachable grate bar segments, each set being mounted on one of said longitudinal members.

5. A sectional grate bar comprising a bar having a portion thereof cut away, a notch in the base of the cut away portion, a side lug on the bar near the outer end of its cut away portion, a filler block adapted to fill out the cut away portion and the notch, and grate segments slotted to conform to the cross section of the uncut away portion of the bar, said slots having a side opening which permits their being mounted-over the cut away portion of the bar between said lug and the inner end of the cut away portion and brought to position to slip endwise onto the uncut away portion of the bar, substantially as described.
6. A sectional grate bar comprising a bar having at each end thereof a cut away portion, filler blocks adapted to fill out the cut away portions, shoulders on the blocks and on the bar to prevent the lateral displacement of the blocks, a side lug on the bar near the outer end of each cut away portion, and grate segments slotted to conform to the cross section of the uncut portion of the bar, there being side openings in said slots which permit the segments to be mounted laterally over the cut away portion of the bar between said lugs and brought into position to be slipped endwise on the uncut portion of the bar, substantially as described.
