To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES FRANCIS DUNN, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new'and Improved Pedestal Brace-Bolt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7 I
This invention relates'to a pedestal braceholt for locomotives; and the object is to provide an effective means for bracing the pedestal, which means may be readily removed in a downward direction without interfering with the spring-rigging of the locomotive.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with parts in section. Fig. 2'is a detail plan view of the bracing-sleeve. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a slight modification.
The pedestal-jaws 6 are provided at their lower ends with downwardly-extending slots 7, terminating at their outer ends in round conoavities 8. The upper side walls of the slots 7 are rounded to snugly receive the bindin g-bolt 9,the head 10 of which is provided with a boss 11, fitted in the concavity 8 of the adjacent slot 7, and the nut 12 of which is provided with a similar boss 14,. fitting in the otherconcavity 8. By these means the jaws 6 are braced against movement apart from each other, and at the same time the bolt is prevented from dropping out bythe circular bosses 11 and 1,4, bearing in the similarly shaped concavities 8. When, however, the nut 12 is removed, the bolt 9 may be moved lengthwise and the boss 11 of the head of the bolt readily dislocated from the coacting recesses 8, thus permitting the'movement of the bolt downward through the slot 7 and avoiding the necessity of displacing the spring-rigging, which, as is well known, is located at each side of the pedestal, and which when inplace would prevent the removal of the bolt longitudinally.
,The sleeve 15 surrounds thebolt between the pedestal-jaws and has enlarged end portions 16 with flanges 17 at each outer side edge thereof. These flanges are adapted to take over the respective sides of the pedestaljaws at the lower portions thereof, thus securely bracing the jaws against movement toward each other. When the parts are to be assembled, the sleeve 15 is first placed on the bolt and the bolt and sleeve moved upward together, after which the nut 12 is tightsued to force the bosses 14. and 11 into the respective recesses 8, and thus lock. the several parts in place.
The modification shown in Fig. 5 consists in substituting a washer 11 for the bosses 11 and 14 shown in Figsyl to 4.. This washer surrounds the bolt and bears against the head and fits in the concavity to operate the same as the bosses before described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a pedestal-brace,-the combination of a sleeve, a bolt extending through the sleeve, and means at each end of the bolt for fastening the bolt in place, such means also serv-' their outer ends in recesses, a bolt extending through the slots, and means at each end of the bolt for drawing the bolt into operative position, such means also serving to enter the recesses in the pedestal-jaws, to prevent the dropping of the bolt through the slots.
