Description

P. HALLER. FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
APPLICATION HLED; APR. 8, I916- Patented. Dec. 12, 1916.

FIRE-'EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEARL M. HALLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FiraExtinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fire extinguishers and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted to automatically be set in operation upon the burning through of a fusible cap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will spray the extinguishing liquid over a relatively large area thereby insuring a wide operation of the device.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device in which the spreader is released automatically upon the burning through of the fusible cap.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a fire extinguisher constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the tank containing the fluid provided with the inclined bottom wall 2 which is formed with the outlet nozzle 3. This nozzle is closed by a fusible plug as will be more fully hereinafter described. Secured to and extending downwardly from the bottom 2 are suitable brackets or posts 4 the lower ends of which support a frame 5.
\ Intermediate the upper and lower terminals spring of the motor is formed with an eye 11 which surrounds one of the posts or brackets 4 and it will thus be seen that when the gear is rotated in one direction the sprlng will be wound and whenrotated in the opposite direction the spring will unwind. The upper end of the shaft 7 is formed with a reduced cylindrical extension 12 carrying the cup shaped blades 13 which form the distributers. The blades 13 are secured to a suitable hub which is notched in its upper end as at 1 1 and is adapted for the reception of a rib on the fusible cap which will be more fully hereinafter described. The fusible cap above referred to is designated by the numeral 15 and consists of a conical body of a suitable fusible material having its lower end formed with a depending extension or rib 16 while the upper end fits over the neck 3 so as to close the opening therethrough. The extension 16 is adapted to fit in the notch 14 and it will thus be seen that when the extinguisher is in inoperative position the spreader will be held in inoperative position against the tension of the spring of the motor.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the tank 1 is filled with any suit able extinguishing fluid and the spring motor is then wound whereupon the cap is applied to the neck 3 so that the extension 16 engages in the notch 14 and when in this position it will be evident that the neck will be closed and the motor held inoperative. After the device has been set as previously described the frame is inverted as shown in the drawing and suspended at any desired point. When a fire occurs it will be evident that the cap 15 will be destroyed thereby opening the neck 3 and permitting the fluid to flow outwardly and simultaneously with the destruction of the cap 15 the motor will be released thereby allowing the spreader to revolve and cause the outflowing liquid to be thrown over a relatively wide area thereby extinguishing the blaze and putting out the fire.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is 1-- A fire extinguisher comprising a tank hay,-
ing a central outlet opening arranged in the depending extension on said fusible cap for bottom Wall, a pair of frames suspended engagement Within the notch to hold the below said tank, a spreader journaled 'in spreader against operation.
said frames and consisting of a plurality of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature spoon shaped Wings, a spring motor carried in presence of tWo' Witnesses.
by the frames and adapted to actuate the PEARL M. HALLER. spreader, a fusible cap fitted over the outlet Witnesses:
opening, the spreader being provided with MARGARET I-I. KING,
a notch arranged centrally thereof and a JENNIE KING.
