UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEIL MALMQDIST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN LOYD, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED NOZZLE AND SPRINKLER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,368, dated April 10, 1877; application filed March 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NEIL MALMQUIST, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Nozzle and Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a face view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line a m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device to be applied to the end of a hose, which shall be so constructed that it may be made to throw a solid stream or a shower, as may be desired, without its being necessary to interrupt the flowof the water.
The invention consists in' a sprinkler provided with a short tube in its face directly opposite its screw-socket, and having its outer end covered with a perforated cap, with a tube in its side, having its outer end closed, and with a small marble or ball placed within it to adapt it to be used for throwing water in a solid stream or a shower, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents an ordinary rose-sprinkler, which is secured upon a hose-nozzle in the usual way. In the center of the perforated face of the sprinkler A is formed a hole, in which is secured a short tube, B, the outer end of which is covered with a cap, 0. ,The
cap 0 is perforated with a hole of a less diameter than the tube B, and which is directly opposite the screw-socket of the device. In one side of the sprinkler A is formed a hole, in which is secured the end of a short tube, D, made with its outer end closed. E is a small ball or marble, of such a size that it can enter the tubes B and D, but cannot pass through the hole in the cap O.
With this construction, when the marble E is allowed to drop into the tube of cup D, the water will pass through the sprinkler A, and out through the tube B and cap 0 in a solid stream; but if the device is turned down or shaken, so that the marble E will pass from the tube D into tube B, it will close the hole through the cap 0, and the water will be forced out throughthe small holes in the face of the sprinkler A in a shower.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Y A sprinkler, A, provided with a short tube, B, in its face, directly opposite its screwsocket, and having its outer end covered with a perforated cap, G, with a tube, D, in its side, having its outer end closed, and with a small marble or ball, E, placed within it, to adapt it to be used for throwing water in a solid stream or a shower, substantially as herein shown and described.
NEIL MALMQUIST.
