BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application filed June 17, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL Games, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man hattan, in the county and State of New- York, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a portable device of the character mentioned, adapted for disposition in operative relation to a door, window or other movable member; to provide a structure having resonant qualities to augment the sound of the detonation, the production of which is the function of the present device; and to provide a structure which is simple, inexpensive and durable.

Descripti0n.As seen in the drawings, a plate 9 is provided. The said plate is preferably constructed of light sheet metal and has integrally formed therewith, sharply pointed legs 10 and 11. The legs 11, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, are constructed slightly longer than the legs 10 to produce in the plate 9, a slightly inclined position when operatively disposed. Between the legs 10, the metal of the plate is preferably extended to form the overhang 12, wherein is pressed a cup 13.
The cup 13 is provided to hold a detonating cap 14 of any suitable make. The cap 14 when in service is placed centrally in the cup 13 to receive the impact of a head 15 of a hammer 16. The hammer 16 is constructed as shown in the drawings, to form a yoke, the ends whereof are rigidly connected with a rocking shaft 17, which forms the pivot about which the hammer 16 swings. tion, shown by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, with the head 15 thereof pressing the center of the cup 18. In this position, the said hammer is held by a coil spring 18, the end extensions whereof are wrapped around the shaft 17 as shown.
The shaft 17 is pivotally mounted in the preferred form of the invention, in the ears 19. The ears 19 are cut from the body of the plate 9 and upset therefrom at an angle perpendicular thereto. The line of cut is shown best by full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings and the line of the bend of the said ears to upset the same from the plate 9, is shown in said figure of the drawings by dotted lines. The ears 19 are provided with perforations 20, which form the bearings for the shaft 17. The shaft 17, after being extended through the perforations 20 in the ears 19 are provided with rivet heads 21.
The spring 18 is centrally extended to form a foot 22 which normally presses upon the plate 9 and forms an anchorage for the spring 18 and the operating extensions 23 thereof.
When the hammer 16 is actively disposed, it is held in the retracted positions shown by full lines in Figs. land 3, by a trigger 24. The trigger 24 is pivot-ally mounted upon a pin 25. The pin 25 is extended through perforations formed in upturned ears 26, which ears, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, are integrally formed with the plate 9. Like the ears 19, the ears 26 are provided with perforations, such as indicated by the numeral 2'7 prior to being upset as on the dotted lines shown in connection therewith. When upturned, the perforations 27 are alined to receive the pin 25. To hold the hammer 16 and head 15 thereof, the trigger 24 is furnished with a recess 28. The recess 28 is so shaped in the trigger 24, that the upward pressure of the' hammer 16 and head 15 thereof is exerted against the side of the said recess, which side is approximately perpendicular to the path of the said head. By increasing or diminishing the incline of the upper wall of the recess, the sensitiveness of the trigger may be augmented or decreased.

drawings to form an extended foot 29, the office of which is to receive the impact of a door, window or other article, the movement of which is intended to operate the alarm. In service the apparatus is disposed on the floor of a room at the closed side of a door, such as indicated by the numeral 30. It is often desired to partially close the door, to afford improved ventilation for the room, entrance to which is controlled by the door. The door being so arranged, the herein described alarm is placed on the floor with the foot 29 of the trigger 24 juxtaposed to and in the path of the door 30. When the door 30 is opened sufficiently to press upon the foot 29, the trigger 24 is rocked with the pin 25 to remove the recess 28 from engagement with the head 15. When, as sometimes happens, it is desired that the alarm should be operatively connected with a movable object, while being physically removed therefrom, such a device as a cord 31 is employed to connect the trigger 24 with such object. Tofacilitate the mounting of a cord 31 on the trigger 24, the said trigger is provided at the end thereof with a perforation 32.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, downturned sides 33 are provided, the lower edge of said sides being serrated to form saw teeth 34. The ears 35 are severed from the sides 33 and turned above the plate '9, while the sides 33 are turned below the same. In the modified form thus provided, the teeth 34 serve to engage the nap of the carpet while the downturnedv sides 33 augment the resonance of the apparatus.
A further modification of structure employed in this form of the invention, is
found in the hammer head 36. The hammer head 36 is wide spread, as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings to overspread the detonating cap in the cup 13. The detonating portion of this hammer head, is the central loop 87, which is relatively contracted to insure striking the explosive portion of the cap used in conjunction with the apparatus described.
0pemtz'0n.-To set the alarm, the hammer 16 is retracted until, the trigger 24 being raised, the head 15 passes to rest within the'reeess 28. The pressure thereafter exerted by the spring 18 holds the trigger 24. A detonatingcap 14 of approved design is then placed in the cup 13 and the apparatus is operatively disposed or set so that the moving object which it is sought to prevent being opened, will press" upon the foot 29 when moved. When the door 30 or similar object is moved against the trigger 24, the said trigger is rotated on'the pivot pin 25 until the hammer 16 and head 15 thereof are being released, swings the hammer 16 vio- The spring 18 lently about the shaft 17 to detonate the cap 14 when the head 15 strikes thereupon.
Claims:
1.-An alarm comprising a one-piece sheet metal base having depending supporting members and vertically-extended pivot-bearing members, said members being centrally located and integrally formed with said base,
said base being further provided with upstanding pivot-bearing members located at one end of said base; a hammer pivotally mounted on said base plate, said hammer being formed from a single piece of wire bent centrally to form a striking head; a trigger pivotally mounted between said last-mentioned bearing members, said trigger having means for engaging and holding said hammer formed from a wire bent upon itself to form a striking head, said hammer being pivotally mounted in the verticallyeXtended members of said base; a cup formed in said base for receiving a detonating cap, said cap being disposed in the path of said hammer; and a spring operatively connecting said hammer and said base for rotating said hammer and driving the head thereof into said cup when said hammer is released by said trigger.
2. An alarm comprising a one-piece sheet metal base having depending supporting members and vertically-extended pivot-bearing members, said members being centrally located and integrally formed with said base, said base being further provided with upstandingpivot-bearing members located at one end of said base; a hammer pivotally mounted on said base plate, said hammer being formed from a single piece of wire bent centrally to form a striking head; a trigger pivotally mounted between said last-mentioned bearing members, said trigger having means for engaging and holding said hammer formed from a wire bent upon itself to form a striking head, said hammer being pivotally mounted in the vertically-extended members of said base; a cup formed in said base for receiving a detonating cap, said cap being disposed in the path of said hammer; a spring operatively connecting said hammer and said base for rotating said hammer and driving the head thereof into said cup when said hammer is released by said trigger; and means connected with said trigger and extending from the end of said base beyond the limits of said hammer to be engaged by a moving object for releasing said trigger.

An alarm comprising a one-piece base plate having tabs integrally formed therewith; a hammer pivotally mounted in said tabs located centrally on said base plate, said hammer being formed from a single piece of wire bent centrally for forming a striking head; a trigger pivotally mounted in bearings in certain of said tabs at one end of said plate for engaging the head of said hammer and restraining the action of said hammer; and a coil spring mounted on said hammer operable for swinging the same and forcing the head thereof into contact With said base plate adjacent the end thereof removed from said trigger.
