UNITED TATE PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES GOODWIN, OF EAST PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND;
ROTARY CHECK.
Application filed December 24, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GoonwIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East- Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotary checks intended for use in eyeglass holders and similar articles wherein a reel or other rotary disk member moves in a casing or housing under tension of a spring and it is desired to automatically check the reel relatively to the housing.
The essential objects of my invention are to effect the checking operation with certainty and facility; and to obtain these ends in a simple and inexpensive manner, and by means available in a minimum of space.
To the above ends my invention consists in such parts and such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification :-F igure 1 is a front view of an eyeglass holder embodying my invention, showing a portion of the front plate broken away, Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3, a section taken on line 50 c0 of Fig. 2, Fig. l, a section taken on line g y of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, a View similar to that of Fig. 1 showing the device in released position, and Fig. 6, a side elevation of the modified form of my device partially in diametrical section.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the present instance my invention is illustrated as embodied in an eyeglass holder comprising a casing 1, to the back of which is fixed a joint 2, a catch 3, for a pin tongue 4 mounted upon a pivot 5 in the joint. The casing in the present instance comprises the back plate 7 having a side wall or flange 8 provided with opening 9. The back plate 7 is provided with a central perforation 10 to receive the reduced end portion 11 of a post 12, said reduced end forming a resultant annular shoulder 14 adjacent the lower end of the post. Integral or fixed to the post is a cage-like structure comprising a perforated base 15- whose perforation 16 permits the passage therethrough of the portion 11 of the post and whose upper surface abuts against the shoulder 1 1 whereby the body 15 of the cage Specification of Letters Patent.

is rigidly held in position against the back plate 7 by virtue of the riveted over end 17 of the post upon the rear face of the back plate 7. Interspaced upwardly extending arms 18 upon the periphery of the body 15 complete the cage. The casing l is completed by a front plate 20 having a mar ginal flange 21 frictionally engaging and overlapping the flange 8, and provided with an opening 22 which registers with the opening 9. It will be understood that the casing may be of any preferred or desired construction.
Journaled upon the post 12 is a reel 24. In the present instance the reel comprises a tubular hub 25 integral with a plate 26 which forms the web portion of the reel and which is provided with a rearwardly directed marginal flange 28. A lip 29 is cut from the web portion 26 of the reel and around this is the looped end 30 of a volute spring 31 whose opposite end is looped as at 32 upon one of the arms or fingers 18. The spring is inc-losed intermediate the flange 28 and the cage. The reel 24: is completed by a cylindrical rim 3 1 fixed upon the flange 28 and has outturned flanges 35 extending from its ends. The rim 3 1 is somewhat longer than the flange 28 so that a relative depression 28 results in the outer face of the reel for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to. A staple 37 is fixed in openings 38 and 39 in flanges 34: and 28 respectively. To this loop or staple is fixed the end link of a chain or other flexible member 10 which is wound around the rim 3-1 of the reel or drum and passes through the openings 9, 22, of the casing.
The description thus far serves to set forth a convenient form of casing and reel in conjunction with which my check mechanism may be employed. The latter mechanism is in the present instance formed as follows: Fixed to the reduced front end 13 of the post 12 by friction or by riveting through an opening 14: as at 45 or otherwise is the base portion a7 of an upwardly curved pointed finger 18 whose concavity 19 forms a seat for a ball. Integral with or fixed to the front face of the web portion 26 of the reel or drum, in any convenient manner, are two radially disposed arms 51 in alinement with each other, each being provided with cut away or recessed portions 53 at their inner ends in a plane lower than the plane of the outer end portions 54, whereby a clearance is afiorded'the finger as when the drum is rotated. Loose in the depression 28 in the outer face of the reel 24 are a plurality of balls 56 of sufficiently small diameter to roll freely in the depression, but of too great diameter to pass intermediate the outer plate 20 of the casing and the recessed surfaces 53 of the radial arms 51. These balls, which in the present instance are shown as four in number, cooperate with the finger 48 to check or release the drum. As illustrating the operation of the device it will be noted that in Fig. 1 one of the balls 56 rests by gravity in the cavity of the finger and the second ball assists in seating the first in its position by virtue of gravity. The ball is so seated by the movement of the reel 24 shown by the direction of the arrow. To uncheck or release the drum the chain 40 is downwardly pulled whereby the drum is rotated in the direction of the arrow as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the upper of the balls 56 falls downwardly, and the ball that has been seated is pushed out of its seat by the approach from the rear of the second arm 51. After both balls have been thrown out a manual release of the chain 40 centrifugally throws all the balls in a circular course be yond reach of the finger 48 until the chain 40 is completely wound upon the reel. It will be noted that a single ball 56 seated in the finger 48 is sufficient to successfully check and operate the drum without a second ball resting upon it, but the second ball so located is found to doubly insure perfect action. Obviously a number of balls may be employed, either one or any number preferably desired. that my check is operated when the finger 48, 47 is fixed as is shown in Fig. 6, by solder or otherwise, to the inner face of the outer casing plate 20, in which case however the upper end portion 59 of the post 12 is of course not riveted over, as at 45 in Fig. 4, but is cylindrical and fits in the opening 44.
I claim 1. In a check device, the combination of a reel, a post upon which the reel is rotatably mounted, a casing inclosing the reel, a finger provided with a curved seat fixed relatively to the reel and adjacent the surface of the reel, radially disposed elevations upon the face of the reel, and balls loosely mounted upon the face of the reel operable in pairs and having freedom of movement, and of greater dimensions than the space between the finger and the casing of the reel and adapted to contact with the elevations.
2. In a check device, the combination of a reel, of a casing inclosing the reel, a post upon which the reel is rotatably mounted extending beyond the face of the reel, a fin- It will be also observed,
and of greater diameter than the portions 5 of the elevations movable below the finger.
3. In a check device, the combination with a casing, of a post fixed in the casing, a reel rotatably mounted on the post, radially disposed elevations upon the reel provided with recessed portions at their inner ends, a finger. fixed to the post adapted to register in the recessed portions of the elevations and provided with a seat, and balls freely movable intermediate the face of the reel and the casing and operable in pairs.
4. In a check device, the combination of a casing inclosing the reel, of'a post fixed in the casing, a reel rotatably mounted upon the post, elevations upon the face of the reel, a curved pointed finger fixed to the post intermediate the reel and the casing and be yond the elevations, and balls operable in pairs freely mounted intermediate the reel and casing of a diameter greater than the distance between the casing and the elevations.
5. In a check device, the combination of a casing provided with an opening, a post fixed in the casing, a reel rotatably mounted on the post, a flexible member Wound upon the reel and extending through the opening in the casing, said reel being provided with a depression upon its face, radially disposed elevations upon-the face of the reel within the depression provided with recesses at their inner ends, a curved pointed finger fixed to the post at such a distance as to permit the recessed portions of the elevations to move thereunder, balls operable in pairs loosely mounted in the depression and adapted to engage the finger and the elevations when the reel is rotated, and spring means for actuating the reel.
6. In a check device, a casing, a reel ro-, tatably mounted therein, radially-disposed arms carried by said reel, a finger having a ball-seat, and balls in pairs one of the pair adapted to be received in said ball-seat and the other to rest upon the seated ball and to gravitate therefrom as the reel is rotated to allow the other ball to be removed from its seat by one of said radial arms.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
