Description

Dec. 18, 1951 L. W. BALLOU REELING DEVICE Filed May 1 6, 1950 INVENTOR. L es fer WBa//ou ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 18, H1951 l Lester W; Ballom'Attlebora Mass., -assignor to ,i .-Ba1lou.& Boss,.1nc., a corporation ofhode Island Vlipiiiiatim; is', 195o, sensi No.v 162,300
This invention relates toa reeling device of the -typeused for attaching articles to the clothing,
positioned in a vertical plane'an'd in Aacertain definite location inV order mthatrthe catch for the pawl may -be positioned to engage the pawl lwhich will fall into engagement with the catch when in one position. Thus, if the device is placed in ahorizontal plane as it is sometimes desired that the same shall be positioned, ther pawl will not fall by gravity into position and therefore will not properly operate. Centrifugal force is utilized for throwing the pawl to release itself from the catch with which it engages and accordingly' any resilient means for moving the pawl becomes very delicate and precision-like.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a reel which will operate in a horizontal plane as well as in a vertical plane.
Another object of the invention is to provide non-resilient means for urging the pawl to engage the catch when in horizontal position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple finger raised from the stock of the reel for utilizing gravity for urging the pawl in the direction desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will -be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the face of the device; A Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but show'- ing the back of the device; n
Figure 3 is an edge view of the device;
Figure 4 is a central sectional View;
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a View similar to Figure 5 but illustrating the reel and pawl in a different position;
Figure 7 is a sectional view on line '1 -'I of Figure 5.
In proceeding with this invention, I have raised an arm from the stock of the metal reel upon which the chain is wound and upon which the pawl rests so that while in the horizontal position the pawl will slide down the inclined position of the arm toward engaging position with the catch on the spindle, thus making it unnecessary 5 claims. (o1. 2427-3167) for the deviceto be located'infa certain definite position in order for latching to occur. 'Y
With reference to the drawings, I0 designates `the bottomor back plate of the-devicewhich` has a circular or cylindrical flange I'I adjacent its outer edge. A spindle I2'is fixed to the bottom plate by being reduced to provide a shoulder I3 and is thenV passed through the bottom plateand headed as at I4. A cup I5 vis located beneath this spindle' and is secured in position by -se curing the spindle in place. 'This cup is provided with apluralityof notches into one of which the end of a spring of the-reel is received to hold the spring with reference to the plate. The spindle is out away at its outer end as at I6 to provide a at surface or catch I6 for purpose to be presently described. v
A reel designated generally I'I is formed from two pieces of sheet stock I9 and 20 which are .brought into face-to-face engagement. These sheets are bent outwardly to provide the cylindrical surface 2|, 22 with anges 23 and 24 extending outwardly from this cylindrical surface so as to receive a chain or otherexible member 25 in this channel so formed. A recess 26 in the plate I9 provides a chamber for the spiral ribbon spring 27 which has its end in the outer convolution secured to the reel while its inner end 21 is received in one of the notches in the cup I5 to hold it xed relative to the .spindle I2. The stock of this plate I9 is also drawn outwardly as at 28 so as to provide a bearing on thek spindle I2 for rotation of the reel onthe spindle.
The plate 20 of the reel also provides a recess 29 into which the spindle I2 projects and in which the cut away portion forming the catch I6 is located. The bottom wall of this recess has a vpivot pin 30 raised therefromand upon this pin a pawl 3l is pivoted. This pawl is notched to provide a surface 32 which may engage the flat surface I6 of the catch provided on the spindle and when so engaged the reel is prevented from rotation on the spindle in the direction in which it is urged by the spring. However, when the chain 25 is pulled to rotate the reel on the spindle the spring is wound up and in some positions the pawl 3I which is carried with the reel will be free from the catch. If the chain is then released, the spring will cause a winding rotation of the reel and the pawl will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force so that it will not engage the catch I6. Y,
the reel is permitted to revolve slowly. Accordingly, I have raised a finger 35 from the sheet stock of the plate 20 of the reel as shown in Fig. 7 so that the detent 34 of the pawl will ride on the inclined surface of this arm 35 which will slide the pawl downwardly along this inclined surface to cause the surfaces 32 and I6 to engage, this action tak-inggplace when the pawl is in a, horizontal plane and-is' urged only by gravity. In order to prevent the pawl from extending outwardly beyond the arm 35 a finger 36 is raised at the end of the arm 35 so that the pawl will.
strike this nger and be prevented from undue outward movement. A cover telescopes into the recess 29 to maintain the pawl in place on its pivot 36.
A cap 40 is telescoped over theflange il of surface of saidY member.
