EYEGLASS-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented eye glass holders of the type employing a casing to be pinned or otherwise secured on the wearing apparel, a spring-wound reel in said casing, and a cord or chain wound on said reel and adapted for attachment to the eye glasses; and the principal object is to provide a novel construction and arrangement of parts for normally preventing the spring of the reel from winding the latter, the construction of such means being so simplified a to cheapen manufacture without lack of efliciency.

With the foregoing general object in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique arrangements of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which:

liig. 6 is a perspective view of the cord ree In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates any preferred type of flat circular casing having the usual or any preferred form of pin 2 or other attaching device on its rear side, the edge of said casing having an opening 3 through which the eye glass cord or chain 4 passes from the reel 5 which is located within the casing. The reel 5 is formed of stamped metal and it ends are provided with circular recesses 6 and 7 the former receiving the winding spring 8 while a pawl 9 is located in the recess 7 to normally prevent winding movement of the reel. mounted on a fixed central post or shaft 10 having one end reduced, passed through the rear side of the casing 1, and upset at 11. The post 10 has its opposite sides milled or otherwise flattened at12 adjacent its anchored end, said flattened sides being located in the recess 7 for cooperation with the pawl 9, and the end of the post opposite said anchored end is free of connection with the casing and is provided with a longitudinal slit in which t e spring 8 is anchored.

The pawl above referred to is stamped from a single piece of sheet metal of proper thickness and said pawl is formed in substantially the shape of a J, one end of said pawl having a V-shaped notch 13 while the other end thereof is increased in width to form a weight 14. A lug 15 is stamped inwardly from the sheet metal wall of the recess 7 and is received loosely in the notch 13 to pivotally mount the pawl so that the latter may so swing as to either engage or disengage the flattened sides 12 of the shaft 10, the inner curved edge of the pawl being provided with an integral lug 16 cooperating with said flat sides as shown in Fig. 4. Normally, that is when the cord 4 is unwound from the reel, the lug 16 engages one fiat side 12 of the shaft 10 as shown in Fig. 4 so that rewinding of the reel is prevented. In order to release the pawl however it is simply necessary to give a rather sharp pull on the cord and to then quickly release the same, but the moment the movement of the reel is sufliciently slow to permit the weight 14 to dro against centrifugal force, the lug 16 wil again engage the shaft 10 to arrest further I movement of the reel.

The exact construction and mounting of the pawl 9 and of the post 10 is extremely simple and inexpensive and is therefore easy to manufacture, yet these features do not result in any loss of efiiciency or durability. It is this novel arrangement of parts that forms the gist of the present invention and upon which Letters Patent is sought.

I claim:

1. In an eye glass holder, the combination of a flat casing, a fixed central shaft in said casing having its opposite sides flattened at one end, and a spring-wound stamped metal cord reel in said casing mounted rotatably on said shaft, one end of said reel having stamped therein a circular recess at whose center the flattened end of said shaft is 10- cated; together with a lug the wall of said recess and extendinginto the" latter, and a =J-shaped pawl i11 said" recess E having in one' 'enda notch into -Whi'ch said lug projects to pivotally mount said pawl,
