FENCE-POST BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Braces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to braces especially adapted for connecting and bracing fence posts and the like.
My invention contemplates, primarily, the provision of a bracing which may be quickly and easily applied to posts of various kinds, such as wooden, metal and concrete posts, and I have aimed to provide a simple and improved form of brace having a substan= tial bracing effect and which will maintain the posts in proper relative relation against severe lateral strains.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved coupling means for securing the ends of a brace to a post, and also to provide a sectional brace and improved means for coupling and securing the joined ends of the brace together.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of posts in connection with my improved brace; Fig 2 is a detail view of one of the end socket clamps of the brace; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 of Fig. 1.
My improved brace is designed to be used in connection with either wooden, metal or concrete posts, and in the present instance, I have illustrated a pair of spaced posts 4 which may be of any suitable composition,
the brace I have shown being interposed between the upper ends of these posts. The brace, of novel construction, is connected to the posts in a peculiar manner so that the posts are positively bound together and braced against relative displacement due to lateral strains.
The brace is formed of a pair of pipe sections 5 and 6 telescopingly joined by in serting an end of the pipe section 5 into the adjoining end of the section 6, and the section 5 being of smaller diameter and consequently the least expensive, may consti' tute the major portion of the brace. The
spective pipe sections. These band clamps are rigidly connected at 11, effecting a fixed connection between the pipe sections so that the same are held against relative displacement. Each end of the brace is secured to the adjacent post by novel means which will now be described. A band clamp 12 em bracing each end of the brace and secured thereto by a nut and bolt 13 is provided with an integral upstanding portion 14 having a transverse aperture 15 therethrough. In the instance that the brace is employed in con nection with wooden posts, suitable screws or nails 16 may be employed to secure the band clamps to the posts. In any instance,
however, my invention contemplates the use of band clamps 17 embracing the posts and passing through the apertures 15 whereby to fixedly secure the band clamps 12 to the posts when the clamps 17 are drawn tight on the post. A suitable wire tie 18 may be employed to further bind the posts together, but it should be understood that my invention is in no way dependent upon such a tie.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that my improved form of bracing provides a direct brace between a pair of posts and one which may be easily applied to and adjusted as to length when accommodating the brace to the posts. By reason of the band clamps 17 and the novel connection between the same and the clamps 12, the brace is held in fixed rigid connection with the posts and may be easily adjusted vertically with respect thereto and applied equally well to posts of different compositions.
I claim:
1. The combination with a fence post, of a lateral brace comprising a pair of pipe sections telescopingly joined, one of the pipe sections being connected to said post and the other to an opposedsupport, and means fixedly securing the pipe sections together at'their joined portions comprising band 100 V 5 bination With the post, a, lateral brace, a
clamps embracing and clamped to each pipe section, and a connection between the clamps holding them in fixed relative relation.
2. A fence post brace comprising in comhaving an aperture therethrough, a split band embracing the post and extending through said aperture, and means for clamping the last mentioned split band to the post whereby to secure the brace in fixed relation split band embracing the brace, means for thereto. clamping the band to the brace, the band being provided With an integral extension 7 LEWIS OLSON.
