CHARLES BRINKMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed September 18, 1916. Serial No. 120,840.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BRINKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy vessels, and has for its object to provide a device which will give an imitation of a battle ship, by the ignition of explosive gases. This object is accomplished by providing a floating boat, and a submarine or submerged vessel, the former being provided with candles or other means for supplying flames, and the latter being provided with means for generating and liberating an explosive gas, which bubbles up through the water and is ignited as it rises therefrom, producing an imitation of a battleship in action. One or both of the vessels may be provided with means to propel the same, and they are connected so that the submerged vessel remains in position under the floating vessel. The connection is detatchable so that either vessel may be used alone if desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail of a periscope attachment which may be used on the submarine when the latter is disconnected from the floating vessel.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a floating toy vessel which may be constructed in imitation of a war vessel. It may be provided with any well known means to operate the propeller 7 and drive the boat. At desirable places along the sides of the boat it has tubular holders 8, preferably imitating guns, and adapted to have candles 9 inserted therein, and these candles are lighted when thetoy is used.
10 is a submarine vessel provided if desired with weights 11 to sink it, and with a propeller 12 which may be driven by any suitable motor. This vessel is connected to the floating boat by a rod 13 which is attached in a recess 14 at the keel of the floating vessel by a removable pin 15. The submarine vessel is also provided with a tank 16 adapted to h ld carbid 17 or other gas pro ducing material, and the cover or top of this tank has small holes 18 for the escape of the gas. The rod 13 conveniently extends from this tank which is located at the top of the submarine.
In the use of the toy, the candles are lighted and carbid and water are placed in the tank, and as the gas is generated it escapes from the holes and bubbles up through the water and is ignited by the candles as it rises from the surface, thereby giving a succession of small explosions in imitation of a war vessel firing. The boats may be propelled as above explained, and a pleasing effect is produced by the fact that the source of the gas is invisible.
The invention is not limited to the exact device shown, but various modifications may be made within the scope thereof.
I claim:
1. A toy boat provided with means to carry flames, and means to liberate an explosive gas in position to be ignited by said flames.
2. The combination of a toy surface boat provided with means to maintain flames thereon, and a submerged vessel connected to the surface boat and provided with means to liberate an explosive gas in position to be ignited by said flames.
3. The combination of a toy surface boat provided with holders for candles or the like at the sides thereof, and a submerged vessel connected to the surface boat and provided with a gas tank having an outlet, adapted to liberate gas under the boat in position to be ignited by said candles as it rises from the water.
4. The combination with a toy submerged boat provided with means to liberate a gas, of means at the surface of the water, and connected to said boat, to carry flame in position to ignite said gas as it rises from the water.
5. The combination with a toy boat having candle holders mounted thereon above the water level, of a submerged vessel, means suspending the submerged vessel under the bottom of the boat, and a gas tank carried by the submerged vessel and provided with an outlet for gas, for the purpose stated.
6. A toy boat provided With means to In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature carry flames above the Water surface, and in presence 0 two wltnesses.
