K. LAPlN-SKAS. UNDERSEA DESTROYER. APPLICATEON YHLED OCTIS, I918.

specification of Letters ?atent.
Application filed october 3, 1918. Serial No.'256,650,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KAzIMnnAs LAPtNs- KAS, a citizen of Russia, residing at Union City, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undersea Destroyers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus adapted to engage destructive devices with the hulls of ships and has as its special object the provision of a submergible boat adapted to convey an operator in such a manner that he may be enabled to attach a bomb to the hull of an enemy ship whereby it may be destroyed.
A further object is to provide means whereby the operator is enabled to manually cause attachment between the bomb and the hull at any desired point therealong, so that the more vulnerable parts of the ship may be damaged.
These and similar objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a side elevational View showing a conventional type of ship and indicating the operation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the subinergible boat.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the same.
Fig. 4c is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line H of Fig. 3, and
Fig 5 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of the bomb used in connection with the boat.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10, designates a conventional type of'a sea going ship provided with all the usual and necessary paraphernalia and mechanism for its propulsion and navigation.
The undersea boat, indicated generally by the numeral 15, is comprised of an ovoidal casing 16, having symmetrically rounded ends 17, the casing being provided'with a ballast or weight 18, by which it is held in a normally upright position.
On the upper side of the casing is an opening 20, normally covered by a dome 521,
having curved flanges 22, held in position on the casing by a ring 23 secured by screws" 24, the arrangement being such as to pro-' vide a water tight covering through which the operator may enter the boat.
Interior walls 25 extend downwardly Patented Apr. 8, i919.
from the opening 20, the same being bent to. I
form a seat 26, which continues an element 27, forming a water tight compartment 28 for the operator, while rearward of the partition is another compartment 29 above the' ballast 18, this compartment having ahorizontal flooring 30, which extends to the rear end of the casing, and has positioned therein a pump 31, driven-by a chain 32, trained over a gear on the motor 33.
Rearward of the chamber 29 is a vertical partition 34., divided intotwo portions by horizontal fioorings 30 the upper portion 36 being adapted to contain water, as 15 a similar chamber 37 at the front of the boat, and enterable into these chambers are pipes, respectively 38 and 39, through which water may be passed from one'to the otherby action of the pump 31, thus aid'ordin ,ineans whereby the submergible boat may tilted by changing the water in thecompartments.
In the lower compartment 29, over the ballast 18, is a storage battery 38, leading to a switch and controlling device 39, in the chamber 28, by which'the motor i0 may be energized, this motor drives the chain 41 and by it a propeller shaft 42, extending through. the end of the boat and having attached to it a propeller (i=3, by which the boat is propelled through. the water. i
Energy from the storagebattery 38' also passes through a controlling deyice 44:, whereby the motor 33- may be energized when desired. The wall 4-5 of the chamber 28 is inclined forward so as to provide room for the operator. The chamber :6 is open to the water through the passages l? and is adapted to contain a store of the bombs 50, which may be passed outward through the opening 47 by extending the arms of the operator through openings 48 formed in the sides of the casing, there being engaged with the edges of the openings 48, impervious flexible sleeve-like attachments 52 through which the hands 53 may pass, it being possible to enter the hands through the openings 47, and engagethe bombs, towhich are attached powerfulr negnets 51, adapted m adhere to the metallic hull of the ship 10 at any point along its surface.
In operation, the casing being carried upon the deck of the mother ship, the operator may enter, after which the dome 21 is secured in position and the submergible lowered into the water.
The operator is then able, by the various electrical controls, to tilt the-boat in any desired direction and to operate the same, either backward or forward, maneuverlng as usual until the boat has arrived below the hull of the ship to be destroyed, whereupon the arms are extended, a bomb extracted use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow submergible casing, having a plurality of water tight compartments formed therein, a plurality of bombs carried in one of said compartments, said bombs having magnets formed thereon, and impervious flexible sleeve-like attachments formed through the sides of said casing permitting'an operator to manually extract one or more bombs from said compartment and attach the magnet formed thereon to the hull of an adjacent ship. I
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
