I v Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patnlmtoddaeu 11.2, llllll..
Application led March 4L, 1511.6.l Serial No. 82,046. A
apparatus for ner, and, with the apparatus so arranged and designed, that it may be easily and conveniently carried about, and capable of removing large areas of paper from walls or ceil-` ing with the consumption of but a small' quantity offuel.
A further object is to -provide an apparatus for removing paper from walls or ceilings utilizing both the moisture and heating properties of steam, and in'such manner that but a small quantity -of steam escapes; the majority of the steam condensing and returning to the boiler, so that a relatively 'small boiler may be used without requiring the continual supplying of water to the boiler.
A further object is to provide a steam applicator, which, upon contactin with wall paper or other surfaces, will irrimediatelyheat and moisten the same, and in a uniform manner; this end beingV attained with an economical amount of steam consumption, rendering unnecessary the use of a large steam beller, or the employment of considerable quantities of the uel.
A further`object i to prov details of construction hereinafter described and claimed; it. being understood that Y., changes inthefprecise embodiment of the in- Vention can bemade within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.' v y rlFhe preferred embodiment of my invenide anapparatus which may be economically constructed.
tion is disclosed in the accompanying `drawings, wherein .Figure '1 is a view in perspective Rof -my wall paper` removing apparatus, illustrating the same in actual use; Fig. 2 is a view in vfront elevation, and partially in section, of
the plant for generating and supplying steam to the applicator; Fig. 3 is a' vlew in front elevation of the applicator, portions thereof being removed to illustrate certain I details of construction; Fig. 4 is a view in lorizontal section, taken on the line 4 4 of Referring speciicallyto the several views,l the apparatus is formed with a boiler 10,I to which is secured ythe handle 11 whereby the boiler is rendered conveniently portable. A stove or-'heating member 12, capable of burning kerosene or other fuel, is mounted below thelboiler 10 by the upright supports 13. A
water glass 14 serves to indicate the level of the water within the boiler,` which supplymay be replenished from time tov time through the valve 15, which also acts as an escapement for the steamshouldit be so desired. The .return manifold 16 is alsocarried by the boiler, and communicates therewith-through the check valve'l?, the latter allowing the return of water to the boiler but preventing the escapement of water therefrom. L y. Y z
Communicatingv withthe top of the boiler is the outlet pipe 18, with which coinmun-icates a pressure gage 19, so lthat the pressure within the boiler may be regulated and maintained at .the desired amount. A condensing chamber 20 is carried by the' outlet pipe 18, providing that dry steamv will enter the steam supply pipe 21, which latter is provided with the regulating valve 22.. The outlet supply 'pipe 21 extends down` within the steam separating chamber 20, so
that dry steam willbe'supplied to the flexible conduit 23, which-forms a 'part of the steam supply pipe;
'llhe applicator ydisclosed in detalil'in Figs.. l 3 and l comprises a substantial rectangular box 24 formed A'from sheet metal, the outer edge of which is flared' or outwardly turned l' frame 27 issea'ted within the rece'ssiorA chan-1- ber. formed by the inward offsetting of the front wall 26 ofthe box, which frame .carries ascreen-or netting 28 and a pad 29,'
' }the'latterjbeing` formed of naterial similar 4to a Turkish towel or other similar article.
. This pad 2 9 extends over and Vis secured to the frame 27 andalsoprojects in front of the planeof the flange 25 of thejbox so that when vthe` applicator isheld against a wall, the pad- -ding 4alone Vcontacts therewith.
Communicating with the interior of the box-24 is the inlet pipe 30 which extends well up within the box and is provided withv an .inlet valve 31, the latter being connected to the steam separator20 by the flexible conduit 23. second Aand outlet pipe 32 communicate's with the interior-.of the box 24,
with several Vsmall outlet ducts 34, through f moist; The outlet ducts are of such restrictand' is adapted'to ret 'thewater of con-- densation from the 'applicator tothe return .manifold V16 by the exible .return conduit 33, `The front wall 26 ofthe box is provided which falimited alnount of s'team'is allowed to escape', maintalning the .entire pad 29 ed'size' tha-ta pressure is maintained within the boiler, maintaining the applicator at a high tempera-ture, and the pad 29 highlyheated.Y This heated and moist `condition` f lof-the padv quickly loosens the paper from -.-i the wall, and allows it to be easilyremoved.
' A large heating and-.radiating surface is provided by the lfront wall 26 of tle box,
'while' 'the 'screen 27 provides a suitable space'for the circulation of lsteam 0 the rear also incorporate Ya certain' to the rear of lthe ap licaiol'gf.V the entire* appalr,"j wliereby the tity of fuel for the operation of the apparatus.
1. A'wall paper remover comprising a closed shallow box, a handle carried thereby, a pad stretched over the front Wall of' said box, said front wall provided with a limited number lof restricted openings communicating with the interior of said box and' terminating at the rear surface of said pad. 2.\A wall paper remover comprising a portable closed box, a handle carried there-V by, aipad extending over the front wall of said box, the front wall of said box provided `vwith a llimited number of tine openings therein, preventing the rapid' escapement of steam from said box, to thereby provide for the maintenance of pressure therein.
3. A wall paper 'remover comprising a portable closed shallow box with an inwardly oii'set front wall, a frame including a netting, anda pad, located Within the recess dened by the oli'set front wall, 'the front wall of said vbox provided with openings-therein.-
4. A wall paper remover comprislng a portable-closed shallow box with an in- .wardlyoiset `front wall, flexible steam inlet .and outlet pipes communicating' with -said box, a frame including a pad, and a netting, positioned within the receptacle defined by. the oii'set front wall, said pad extending substantially flush with fthe outer edge'of said box, theA front wall of said box provided with a limited number' of restrict-v ed openings extending therethrough.
