Description

GARRTETT C. LQWE Impovent in IBettler Stoppers.
lPatented Nov- 14,18711l i PATE GAEEETT c. LOWE, 0E NEW vonk, NQY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,821, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRETT G. LOWE, of the city and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved BottleStopper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a full View of stopper. Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the staves. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross-sections.
My expansible stopper is made of three or more staves within an India-rubber cylinder, that is closed at one end and at the other end surrounds a conical washer, through which a screw passes and acts upon a second conical washer at the other end of the staves. By this construction the staves can be spread to enlarge the stopper or the reverse.
The staves c c are made as segments of a cylinder divided longitudinally, and with inclined ends to iit the conical washers b and c. I have shown six of these staves, but they may bemore or less numerous. The screw d passes through the cone b and screws into the cone c, and the head projects above the cone b. The cylinder of rubber e surrounds these parts, as represented, and forms the bottle-stopper, and this elastic cylinder can be distended to suit the size of the bottle neck by drawing the cone c toward the cone b by the screw d, or the reverse movement allows the cylinder e to contract.
I claim as my invention- The staves a a, between the cones bc and within the rubber cylinder e, in combination with the screw d for distending the cylinder e of the bottlc-stopper, as set forth.
GARRETT O. LOWE.
