JOHN I. WOLF, OF GREENFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,805, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN I. WOLF, of Greeniield, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Gravel Wagon-Beds;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a dumping- Wagon, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my Wagon box, showing the bottom open and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the bottom closed.
A represents a wagon-box of any desired dimensions, the bottom of which is composed of a series of plates, B B, hinged each near one edge in the sides of the box. Each plate B is attached to a bar, G, the ends of which form pivots or journals, and are inserted in the sides of the box A immediatelybelow cleats D, running longitudinally along said sides. The plates B B overlap each other, so as to form close joints when closed. Each plate is by a chain, a, connected with a shaft, E, which runs longitudinally through the box, and has its journal-bearings in the end pieces thereof. The shaft E is, at any suitable point within the box, provided with a lever, G, by which the shaft is turned so as to raise and close the plates constituting the bottom. The lever then fits in between two eyes, b b, on the side of the box, and a rod,d, is moved by means of a lever, f, through said eyes, thuslocking the lever and holding the bottom in place closed. The lever f is pivoted at the side of the drivers seat H, so that he can at any time re lease the lever G and dump the load. The shaft E is also provided with pins e e, so that the driver can at any time with his feet turn the shaft and thus close the bottom. The lever G, in place of being set at about the center of the box, may be arranged in front and fastened with a spring, and the spring worked with a foot-lever, so that the driver can unload his load without getting off his wagon, and do his work with his foot.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the plates B B, chains a a, and shaft E, substantially as and for the purposes herein setfor'th.
2. The pins e e, arranged in the shaft E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The lever G, rod d, and lever f, or their equivalents, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix lmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: J. I. WOLF.
