To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNIE R. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 309 West College avenue, Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MOp-VVringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices of the above type and has for its primary object the provision of a compa-ratively simple construction which can be readily attached to a bucket and operated in an ecient manner with but little effortv on the part of the operator.
With the above and other desirable objects in view, to be referred to as the description progresses, the invention resides in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved mop wringer shown in position on a bucket, the latter being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view and Fig. 4l is an end view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular frame comprising side bars 2 and 3 and end bars 4 and 5 preferably of iron, steel or the like. The forward eXtremities of the end bars 2 and 3 are offset and terminate in hooked ends 6 and 7 bent at an angle to better engage the rim of the pail 8, while the rear ends thereof are bent inwardly and downwardly forming lugs 9. Projecting rearwardly from these lugs are a pair of tubular sleeves or bearing members 11 and 12 for a purpose about to be described.
A segmental plate 13 having rearwardly extending posts 141 and 15 slidably mounted in the sleeves is adapted to engage the opposite side ofthe pail, suitable means such as the loop 16 being provided for pulling the plate rearwardly against the tension of springs 17 when it is desired to remove the frame 1 from the pail.
Each of the side bars is provided with an elongated slot 18 in which the ends of the shaft 19 of the forwardly disposed roller 20 is adjustably mounted. A second roller 21 Specification of Letters Patent.

is supported between the side bars by a roller carrying member 22, comprising a cross arm 23 having a rearwardly projecting centrallyT disposed tubular post 24 which slidably fits within a tubular sleeve 25 carried by the rear end bar 5 of the frame 1. The roller 21 has a shaft 26 the ends of which pass through the forwardly bent apertured ends 27 of the cross arms 23 into guide slots 2S formed in the side bars 2 and 3 approXimately in alinement with but spaced from the slots 18. A coil spring 35 bearing at onek end against the arm 23 and at the other end thereof the forward end of the sleeve 25 normally maintains the roller 21 in its forwardmost position.
Suitable means is provided for moving the roller 2O toward or away from the roller 21. ln the preferred embodiment of my invention this means consists of a pair of bail members 29 having their forward apertured ends secured to the extended ends of the roller shaft 19 as by nuts 36 and the upwardly and rearwardly bent rear ends 3() thereof inserted in apertures 31 formed in opposite sides of a lever 32 pivoted at 33 tothe sleeve 25. It will thus be seen that when the lever 32 is elevated to the position shown in Fig. 2, the roller 20 will be caused to move forwardly in the guide slots 18. The pivotal point 33 is 'designedly somewhat elevated above the horizontal plane of the sleeve 25 and the lever 32 formed of arcuate shape in cross section so that when the latter is moved to normal position (see Fig. 1) the roller 20 will be locked against displacement, in an obvious manner.
The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing but may be brieliy described as follows: To attach the wringer to a pail the user hooks the ends 6 and 7 of the side bars over the rim and by means of handle 16 pulls the segmental pail engaging plate 13 to the left Fig. 2 until the plate clears the rim of the pail. Upon release of the handle the springs 17 will force the plate into resilient engagement with the side of the pail. In order to enable the user to insert the mop between the rollers the lever 32 is elevated causing the roller 2O to move to the right (Fig. 2) away from roller 21 thereby affording ample space between the rollers for this purpose. The mop is now inserted between the rollers, and the lever and consequently the roller 20 returned to normal position, causing the mop to be resiliently engaged between the rollers. A withdrawal of the mop from between the tightly compressed rollers will result in the mop being wrung dry.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A mop wringer comprising a substantially rectangular frame comprising side and end bars, means for clamping said frame to a pail, each of said side-bars being provided with a pair of slots, a roller having a shaft the ends of which engage in one of said slots, a second roller and shaft the ends of which engage in the other of said slots, means for resiliently ho-lding said rst mentioned roller in its forwardmost position, a lever pivoted to one of said end bars and means connecting said lever and said second roller whereby said second roller may be moved toward and away from said irst mentioned roller.
2. A mop wringer comprising a substantially rectangular frame, comprising side and end bars, means for clamping said frame to a pail, each of said side bars being slotted,'a pair of rollers having shafts seated in said slots, a lever pivoted to one of said end bars and having a pair of bail members connected thereto at one end and at the other end to the shaft of one of said rollers whereby when said lever is elevated said roller will be moved forwardly and when said lever is moved to horizontal position said roller will be moved rearwardly into locked position.
8. A mop wringer comprising a substantially rectangular frame, comprising side and end bars, means for clamping said frame to a pail, each of said side bars being slotted, a pair of rollers having shafts seated in said slots, a lever carried to one of said end bars, a pair of bail members connected to said lever and to the shaft of one of said rollers whereby when said lever is actuated said shaft is caused to slide in said slot, the
pivotal point of said lever being so arranged A that when said lever is moved to horizontal position said roller will be locked against movement in said slot.
4. In a mop wringer a rectangular frame comprising side bars and end bars, the forward ends of said side bars being bent at an angle and the extremities thereof curved, the opposite ends of said side bars being bent downwardly and inwardly forming lugs, sleeves carried by said lugs, an arcuate pail engaging member having posts slidably mounted in said sleeves, springs on said posts normally forcing said plate forwardly, mea-ns for moving said plate against the tension o f said springs, and a pair of rollers mounted in said side bars.
